Ethics, Tuesday, October 26, 2021

"This weekend is an Earth holiday called Halloween," Anakin said, "so if you've been wondering about the decorations and the skeletons, that's what it's for."

He then gave an explanation about Halloween that was about 60 percent accurate, if you accounted for how he'd graduated from high school with a vampire, had known werewolves, and some of the people he'd taught over the years had been dead.

And that wasn't even bringing in Force ghosts.

"Now that that's more clear--" sort of, "--let's get to crux of the matter, which is throughout the weekend, you may dress up in costumes and receive candy from strangers for free," Anakin said. "At no other time of year is it considered a safe or ethical practice to go up to someone's door and threaten them with mischief in exchange for snacks." He glanced around the room. "Is this a tradition you are familiar with? Is there a holiday in your home dimension that celebrates the veil between the living and the dead and symbolic bribes to keep the malevolent away? Does it work?"

“We don’t really celebrate Halloween back home,” Jo explained, “most of the focus is on All Saints Day,”

“Well not candy as such,” Jo explained, “at home there’s usually a church service and then a feast afterwards,”

“Well we’d always have a traditional roast dinner so mostly meat and potatoes and some Yorkshire pudding but for desert we have soul cakes,” Jo paused and because it was Fandom, “they don’t have actual souls in them, they’re a type of cookie,” she added just in case, which felt rather weird.

“They have a bit of a spicy taste, they’re mostly made with raisins or currants,” Jo told him, “my family’s co…uh…” she realised she had been about to talk about how her family’s cook made it and that sounded like bragging so she stopped in mid sentence, “uh… I mean in my family we make it with raisins but I think it can be adapted to personal preference,”
