Journalistic Integrity (Wednesday, April 12 - 6th period)

Students will find copies of the last three editions of the school paper on their desks.

"Afternoon," Rita said genially. "Take a look at the paper, boys and girls. I'd like you all to find something in the context of the paper that you see as bad journalism, based on what we've covered this term. Bias, lack of context or clarification, and so on. Set to it."

Chloe settles back in her seat, hoping that the criticism stays constructive. At least then, she can use it all to her advantage in the issues that are left. Of course, that doesn't mean she's going to be critical.

"I don't think there was a clear enough description of exactly how hot Bridge and Xander are together," she says.

"Definitely not," Krycek agreed. "More in depth discussion, possibly pictoral evidence would help."

"I'm wondering if I can get journalistic permission to cover the date, to obtain such pictures. That might help."

"If not, I'm sure the paparazzi and tabloids will find them soon enough. 'Young gay couple depart for honeymoon in the future,'" he speculated.

Barbossa coughed.

It sounded strangely like "that could be arranged."

Callisto flicked a note to Barbossa.

Potential public boykissy event coming up. How much for ~~ensuring the participants never live it down~~ advertising?

The boys in question would be Angel and Anakin. After their little tiff in the gym, certain parties think it would be a good idea for them to kiss and make up as it were.

Barbossa read the note.

And laughed. Loudly. And at length.

Fer those two I be givin' ye free publicity, wench. Jes tell me where and when.

Callisto grinned.

You'll be the first person to know once we get that sorted out.

Alanna sketched someone on fire in her notebook.

"They always say the Mountie is hot. They should look into getting new material," Kara says.

[ooc: I'm okay with it, as long as it doesn't get bad and personal. *nod nod*]

[ooc: well, for the record, as someone who writes for the paper every week, I am not okay with it, but as I didn't actually have something in the paper this week, I'll keep my mouth shut.]

[Permission was obtained from Chloe as the editor, since the paper is IG media and thus up for criticism like anything else.]

[If you feel it's good journalism, can't you argue that IC?]

[my argument has nothing to do with if its good or bad journalism -- it's an issue of respect for those of us who take the time to write for the paper. I, as a player, feel that I deserve the respect of being asked before something I wrote is trashed in game, just like it was an issue of respect when you talked to me about Logan's nightmare and I gave you the heads up on V & Bel's meeting.]

[But in the same vein, you have the capacity to defend/promote the paper IG by arguing with Rita/the class. It's completely IC and treated as such - and if someone actually says something that isn't a shippy X/B comment, Rita will be asking them to back up their character's opinion. And if things seem to be heading in a mean-spirited direction from the students, there'll be interference, absolutely. The way this is handled - the level/harshness of criticism - is completely up to the students.

Having said that, it honestly didn't occur to check OOC, as the paper has always been treated as IC info, and IC writing - and you have my apologies for not thinking of that.]

[well, I suppose it depends on what's being criticized. if you're going to criticize the content, that would be an ic thing - but if you're criticizing grammar, etc? that's more ooc, in my opinion. I realize that this is a very IC assignment for Rita to give though :)]

[Point taken - though I would argue that writing style should be considered IC as well. From my perspective, grammar/typos aren't fair game, whereas language/syntax would be. Make sense?]

[ooc: I disagree. If you put something out there for the public to react to, especially something as inflammatory as Phoebe's editorial today, then you can't expect to control their reactions.

Besides, it's *Rita*. It's not like she's got a lot of credibility on the matter.
