Anakin was holding the shenanigans today mostly as a way to conduct a head count on who was still around and comfortable enough to venture outside. The seating and tables had been lashed securely to trees in the park, and the inflatable whack-a-mole games had been bungee corded to each other and then to a tree.

Anakin wasn't losing anyone down a hole during this, thanks.

"Welcome," he said to those who arrived. "Let's work out some stress." He gestured to the inflated games. "We'll be in groups of seven. Six of you are moles--your job is to collect as many balls on the surface of the game as you can. One of you has an inflatable mallet: your job is to smack everyone on the head before they retrieve all the balls. Let's work on those reflexes, everyone."

"Why can't we all have mallets?" Clare said. "I would be cracking with a mallet!"

Clare should never, ever be allowed a mallet.

"That would be more fair," Belle agreed. "I'd enjoy it!"

Was Five around? Hitting him with a mallet would be so therapeutic!

"Maybe the dean has extras! We could use them for protection!"

Against holes! Sure!

"I'm not sure they offer much protection." But nice try, Clare. "But it would be fun."

And they'd have something to occupy themselves with if they got eaten by a hole.

"Take our minds off of things!" Clare agreed, nodding. "I can think of two or three people that would be fun to whack."

Was one of those people named Five? He seemed like an excellent candidate for whacking!

"Do you think the dean will give us mallets if we ask politely?"

"I don't think it could hurt!"

Oh, optimistic Clare.

"It ought to hurt less than being hit by mallets," Belle agreed.

Of course, they were short girls. Being bopped on the head would at least prove difficult for the mallet-wielders.

"He wouldn't hit us, right?"

Clare was still from Catholic schools in Northern Ireland. It wasn't entirely unheard of.

Belle had not considered that idea.

"Oh, I don't think so!"

He probably only wanted to hit other adults and usually only with paint. Probably.

"He's got a face that says he never smiles," Clare hissed.

"He smiles," Belle protested. "Though in a way that suggests he's enjoying these torments he puts us through."
