"Today, since it's between sessions, Beaker has decided to take point," Anakin announced from where his bullhorn was poking out from an absolutely enormous pile of donuts.

The new raccoons had apparently decided to show up today to get new customers through their amazing donuts...tower...things.

So. There were a lot of donuts.

Just. A lot.

"Today we're going to use these donuts--thank you, County Donuts--in a relay race...thing. You can only pass them under your chin. Fortunately, we have a lot of extras for when you drop them!"

He turned to Beaker. "Are there any other rules?"

Beaker meeped extensively. Anakin's eyes went wide. "Well, that's going to get messy."

"Meep meep."

Anakin coughed. "Apparently the donuts are also on a timer and they will disintegrate into sprinkles--or jelly, or cream--if you take too long."

Thank you, Muppet physics.

"Listen for your names! There will be four teams of seven."

Beaker meeped smugly.

Anakin sighed. "And I, apparently, have been included. Come get your t-shirts."

"May I help you, young lady?"

Did Sam know her name? Unclear. Just because she'd been in his class for 7 weeks didn't mean he was meant to remember such details!

Malia looked up at him, eyes not quite comically wide, and swallowed down the salivating.

"Hmm?"

Dammit, what was that smell? It was so good, she wanted it so much. . . .

That was the scent of FREEDOM, of course!

"Young lady are you feeling unwell?"

No, Sam had not considered that he smelled or tasted like delicious, delicious freedom. That would be weird.

Ah, but was it weirder than not noticing that you smelled or tasted differently than usual?

"Mmmhmmm," Malia said absently. She was staring at Sam's feathers. Her teeth were maybe a bit sharper than usual.

Sam was a bird made of felt. Smells were none of his concern!

"May I help you?"

She had to. She had to. The coyote would not be stopped.

She darted forward to take a big ol' chomp of a fluffy, felty wing.

Sam let out an extremely undignified squawk and flapped wildly.

"How dare you! This is unacceptable!! Stop this instant!"

Malia suddenly realized where she was and what she was doing and let go with a little sigh. "Ugh, but you taste so good!"

There was a blue feather stuck between her bottom teeth.

What did freedom taste like, Malia?

"I do not! I am not for eating!"

IT TASTED LIKE FREEDOM, DAMMIT. What did you want, metaphors? She'd spent half her life as a literal coyote.

Malia wrinkled her nose and picked at the feather in her teeth with a claw. "Yeah. Your texture could use . . . work."

"That is because I am not meant to be eaten!"

This was all far too weird for Sam's taste. ~~heh~~

Malia scowled. "Then stop being so tasty."

Way to blame the victim, hon.

"I am not tasty!" How undignified!

"I am regal!"

"Whatever," Malia said. "You can be regal and delicious."

"I refuse to be delicious!"

Sam. That was not a thing you got a say in.

“Yeah, well, good luck with that,” Malia said. “Because you are. You taste like. . . .” She sniffed the feather still stuck to her claw. “. . . Amber waves of grain?”

"Like what?" That was strangely acceptable, Malia.

"I will allow it."

Malia nodded back.

And tried to subtly nibble on that feather again.
