Summer Shenanigans, Wednesday, June 16, 2021

Another Wednesday, another insane set-up in the park!

Today there was a new, six part metal obstacle course set up: a tilted cube, a mountain, a loading bay, the ridge, the front line, and The Sisters.

"Welcome to professional tag," Anakin yelled into his megaphone, "which is apparently a sport now. We will divide into two teams: Team Pizza will be the taggers, Team Dread will be the, um, don't get tagged."

He was from a different galaxy, what do you want from him?

"Going in pairs, you will have 20 seconds in the obstacle course to either track down or evade the other person. If you get tagged, the other team gets a point. If you evade getting tagged, your team gets a point It's pretty easy. Listen for your name and then come get your shirt!"

"What kind of a party is it?" Faye asked, and damn it, that head-ducking thing had no right to be as cute as she found it. "I mean, so I know how to dress."

There would probably not be a lot to whatever it was she did wear, of course.

"I'm not sure. She's being a bit mysterious," Stark said. Just a bit. Really.

"I know it's starting at Caritas and ending at the Devil’s Nest but in between she won't really say. Something on the mainland but not just on the mainland. Or maybe on more of the mainland?"

That was the part that had him a bit uneasy. He didn't blend in well!

"Mmm. Sounds like a short dress, then," Faye decided. Though long enough to cover her holster, since she didn't exactly trust this mystery enough to go in unarmed. "Knowing Summer the little bit that I do, I have to think this is going to involve multiple drinking destinations."

They didn't really do bar crawls where she was from, but it seemed like a logical conclusion to think that whatever happened on the mainland would probably involve drinking as well.

Far be it from Stark to argue with Faye wanting to wear a short dress.

"That seems likely," Stark agreed. There would be karaoke too but he hadn't found that out yet. "Am I supposed to wear something other than I usually do?"

"You," Faye told him, leaning a little into Stark's side in an obvious show of affection (even if she would completely deny it), "should wear your leather pants. For me, if not for the party."

That was kind of one of the perks of -- doing whatever this was, with Faye. She would be maddeningly confusing and vague about a lot of things, but she was generally pretty clear about what she liked.

But Faye, it was summer. It was not leather pants weather.

"I'll consider it," Stark said, grinning. "It might be hot. Since we don't know where we're going."

She could drag him out for leather pants Thursday, too. But who could say how long the pants would last?

Air conditioning was a thing! It wasn't like Faye entertained practicalities when dressing herself, ever.

And leather pants Thursdays could get really awkward, really fast, all things considered. But Faye trusted Eric to be cool about things.

"We also don't know that it might not be very cold where we're going," Faye noted. "This is really the biggest risk of a mystery party. I might end up freezing."

If anyone ended up freezing they might just have to stay very close together. For warmth.

"I don't usually give these things much thought," Stark admitted. "But I wouldn't want you to freeze."

Maybe he'd bring a jacket. Or a hoodie. Just in case.

"I always think about these things." Though to be fair, that was usually because Faye was trying to be as distracting as possible so she could rip people off, whereas this was a situation where she -- although she would never admit it -- kind of just wanted to look pretty for Stark.

And also maybe she'd rip off some randos in whatever clubs they ended up going to. Win-win.

"But if I get cold, you'll just have to figure out how to keep me warm," she added. Because of course she did. Of course she did.

But she didn't have to try and look pretty! Stark thought she was always pretty regardless of what she might (or might not) be wearing.

"I'll do my best," Stark said with a slow smile. "I'm sure we can think of something."

That all sounded extremely suspect. People did not like Faye unless she got dolled up? Like, that just seemed fake?

"Think she's going to expect gifts?" Faye wondered, making a little face. Because if she was, Summer was destined to receive a stolen bottle of vodka that Faye picked up at bar number two, or something.

Look, one half of this pair had reason to be suspect of people liking their looks and it wasn't Faye! Someone here had half a face!

"I don't know. I hadn't thought about that either." Stark was still pretty new to birthday parties.

Whatever, his half a face was cute and Faye found the glowing part fascinating. People legit might not like her if she didn't wear makeup, though. That was a real problem that Faye had convinced herself she had.

"We can figure it out. Give her something from both of us if we have to." Which was super coupley, but Faye would argue that she was just helping Stark out by letting him sign his name to whatever stolen bottle ended up being foisted off on Summer.

Well, the glowing part was impressive. Faye could probably see it whenever she liked. Even if she wasn't wearing any makeup.

"I'm sure we can think of something." Did they make pink vodka? Or there was always jello.

"Does she like...things?" Faye asked, trying to remember what she could of Summer. "I know she has a ship that's a little bit bigger than mine."

There was always booze, yes.

"I wonder why she's being so mysterious about all of this," she added, idly reaching to hold Stark's hand. Like a friend would. Shut up.

"She does have a ship," Stark confirmed. "And a portal gun. And a glitter cannon." She probably didn't need more guns, and if she did Barry probably had that sort of thing covered. "And a lot of jello."

He looked down at their hands then, smiling softly, and gave a very gentle squeeze.

"I could ask if there's anything she wants?"

"Would she give you a real answer?" Faye asked softly, actually looking almost shy at that hand-squeeze. She was smiling, though, as she twined their fingers together, even if she was steadfastly not commenting on any of this. Being cute and affectionate with Stark like this felt nice, as long as she didn't let herself...examine how she felt about it. Or how she felt about how she felt about it. Or how very temporary it all probably was because Faye didn't really think she was cut out for nice things like this. "Or would she be mysterious about that, too?"

At some point there would need to be a discussion. But for now maybe they were just allowed to have something that felt nice? And hand-holding did feel nice. Even if it was confusing.

"She might be mysterious again." Or maybe she wouldn't because that would make it harder to receive a gift? "But I could still ask."

No need to ever discuss anything! Why do that when Faye could flee out a window rather than be honest about her feelings (or, better still, try to distract him with sex? She was super good at that.)

Normal friend things. Just like how the hand-holding was normal and friendly and definitely didn't make Faye feel anything.

"Probably no harm in asking," Faye decided. "And if she tells you something dumb, then it's on her if she receives something dumb."

They did not live on the ground floor. Fleeing out a window might not be the best plan. She could use the door, which might have new locks by then!

"I don't want to get her something dumb," Stark protested. "But it would be her own fault if she said she wanted something that she didn't really."

Faye could risk a broken leg rather than talk about her feelings. It was probably a better option. And if she fled on foot through the door he might follow, duh.

"Look, I don't want to get her anything dumb, either, but this is why people make wishlists for their birthdays," Faye said. Which, like, was something for you to look forward to later this summer, Stark. Faye was not shy about gifts, either.

At least if she jumped out a window there would be someone nearby familiar with the clinic who would fuss over her?

"I don't have all that much experience with birthdays." Because he didn't even have one.

He would absolutely try and do well with gifts though.

You know, that would be exactly what she would deserve.

"Mine's in August," Faye shared. "I'll be twenty-four."

...ish.

"Which isn't any kind of a milestone like this one is for Summer, as I understand it."

20-something, 70-something, what's the difference really?

"I'll remember," Stark promised. He would, too. "It doesn't need to be a milestone to be important."
