There was enough of Summer's humanity in tact that she wondered, briefly, if what she was about to do in class today would end up being too terrible even for her. After all, shouldn't some things be sacred? Shouldn't some things be left sacred?

And then she remembered Dante's disparaging looks regarding the okonomiyaki in Japan and decided, you know what? No. Some things maybe needed to be bastardized a little just to bring it down a peg or two.

"Morning, everyone!" Summer greeted them all cheerfully from the station at the front of the classroom. "Today's going to be a good one! Today, we're doing a classic staple that everyone," well, honestly, considering the people in her class, she wouldn't be surprised if quite a few of them were actually a little disdainful about most pizza, so the most everyone was implied, "enjoys, a favorite of overworked parents, bribing teachers, and college party-goers alike, and that's pizza!

"Now," she said, turning a little serious for a moment, "I don't want to hear anyone try to pull the 'well, that's not technically pizza because blah blah blah' stuff on me. We're working with mayo and pears and soup for these recipes, technically went out the window the moment we entered the class. Technically pizza, technically sane, technically fit for human consumption? All of them. Gone. Right out the window. So, without further ado, let's get some of these started so we can get them baking and see how they fare in the court of popular taste buds."

"Maybe we could take the tuna from this pizza and the Miracle Whip from the other and just make a giant patty melt thing?" Clare asked.

"I vote we do that," Nina decided. "Because, like, we can at least make that edible and not a.......... thing.........."

"Can we also accidentally throw away the pickled walnuts?" Clara asked. "Why would you pickle a nut?"

"Because someone really hated perfectly good walnuts," Nina said, since she'd been ignoring those until Clare had mentioned them. "I think we'll just have to........... blame the squirrels for their disappearance!!!!!!!!!!!"

As Nina oh so subtly slid hers towards the trash.

"I have heard that the squirrels themselves might be slightly pickled," Clare said merrily.

"Ohmygosh, they're beyond pickled!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!" Nina laughed. "I, like, did radio for most of a year and it's just terrifying how drunk they always are!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!"

"Who feeds a rodent liquor?" she asked, giggling. "Seems like a waste."

"It seems that way," she allowed. "But it's a tried and true way of guaranteeing privacy on the island!!!!!!!!!!"

"What would I be needing privacy for?"

Clare lived in a tiny house with neighbors who were all in everyone's business. The squirrels were less pushy than Erin's ma.

Nina blinked.

"You don't like privacy??????????"

"Oh, I love it," Clare said. "As an idea. As a practicality, I've never really had any?"

"Never????????" she asked, startled. "I mean, like, I grew up in a boarding school and I still had some-----but you've never?????????"

"Well, maybe sometimes," Clare said, "but my house is extremely tiny and my family doesn't believe in knocking?"

"It sounds like you're all really close," Nina allowed. "Is your family large??????????"

"~~No idea~~ Not as large as some," Clare said. "My friend Erin has herself, her baby sister, her cousin, her aunt, her ma and da and her grandda all in one house!"
