BWI Airport Portalocity Lounge, Saturday Morning

No more than a few minutes ago, Five had been waiting in Dallas, Texas in 1963 to make sure Kennedy died. The fact that he was in the future/past wasn't actually that strange for him. Because his job. The fact that he was now physically a teenager again, however, really was strange. And annoying.

Mostly annoying.

He grabbed a newspaper--it was 2021 somehow??--and a coffee to take a seat where he could unobtrusively observe people. The fact that he was basically a kid in an ill-fitting suit and sitting near a glittery sign that proclaimed this the pick up spot for Fandom High was just a side-note.

Her father had said he was sending her somewhere safe. He had already procured the necessary magic bean for a portal and it was decided she would attend this new school, beginning immediately. Belle had protested, naturally, but to no avail.

And now she was here, in an utterly strange environment (it was very bright and very loud and very unnatural), surrounded by things that made no sense and people in very odd clothing. Of course, she was dressed like someone straight out of a fairytale and would likely look strange to the rest of them but that would occur to her later.

"Where am I?" she asked to no one in particular.

Belle. Belle, Five had questions about bean based travel.

"Baltimore, Maryland. 2021," Five said, not looking up from his newspaper.

You and everyone else, Five. Literally everyone.

Were those names and the number meant to mean something? They did not. "Beg pardon? Maryland is a kingdom?"

Five lowered his paper to give her A Look for that. "What?"

Right. Not a kingdom then.

"My father said he was sending me to a school. To keep me safe." Belle was clearly not a proponent of this plan. "I take it we're not there?" This certainly didn't look like her idea of a school. Or safe.

"Apparently there is a shuttle coming from the school," he replied, still giving her a suspicious look as he jerked his head over in the direction of the glitter covered sign.

"None of this makes sense," Belle informed him, having no idea what a shuttle might be since this boy was obviously not referring to anything to do with weaving.

"But I suppose I can wait."

Five continued to squint for a moment longer. "Alright. I'll bite. When are you from?"

"What an odd question," Belle said, narrowing her own eyes in return. "What do you mean, when am I from?"

Oh Belle. Sweet summer child.

He gestured broadly at the airport around them where technology and fashion was vastly different from her whole shtick.

"So, I'll ask again... when are you from?"

You know, alternate realities might be more interesting to him.

"From now," Belle said uncertainly. She hadn't been aware there was another option until this moment. "Or so I thought."

Other realms reachable by magic bean portals were one thing, though she had half-suspected they were a legend until her father had revealed his plan. Time travel was just out of the question. Wasn't it?

Again: MAGIC BEAN TRAVEL.

"Well, you'd be wrong. Don't worry, it'll keep happening, I'm sure."

Wow, Five. Wow.

Magic bean travel was very rare! Except when it was commonplace. Because of plot-related reasons.

"You could explain what you meant," Belle told him. "Rather than being rude."

But that meant open and honest communication and that shit didn't fly in the Umbrella Academy! Misunderstandings abound!

Five sighed like it pained him. "You are very clearly not from around here. And, if it's not time travel---" He paused and stared at her. "Huh. Something else. Alternate timeline?"

Well, that sounded like Belle's future relationship!

"I am most assuredly not from around here," Belle agreed. "But then I'm not entirely certain where here is. There was a portal that I was told would take me to a school in a safe realm." Her father was, eventually, going to get such an earful about this.

Wasn't it weird how that worked?

"Realm?" Oh god, this was even weirder than he expected.

"Yes, realm. One without an ongoing ogre war. At least that seems to be true." Yes, there were ogres at home. Deal with it, Five.

Belle sighed. "I would rather have stayed. Or gone to a neighboring kingdom if absolutely necessary. This seems excessive."

"Ogre war," Five repeated, nodding and looking very much like he was humoring her.

Just ignoring the fact that the head of the board was a goldfish where he was from. Yeah.

"Yes, ogre war," Belle repeated, perhaps over enunciating a wee bit out of annoyance. "Which it seems is not happening here so at least my father was correct on that point."

"Yeah, no ogres here," he replied dryly. "That's a new one. Unless you're on drugs maybe."

He'd read all about Klaus in Vanya's book, after all.

"But you have people from different times?" How was that more believable than fairytale monsters, Five? How.

Science? Or just some arbitrary skepticism.

"Yes." He sighed and teleported a little to the side to dump his coffee cup in the garbage. Because he was a little shit like that. "We do."

Belle took a step back. "You can do magic!" Because of course that was magic. How else could it be explained?

"That's not magic." It was kinda magic. "It's just moving through space and time."

Which was kinda magic.

"How?" Belle asked. Obviously it was magic. There wasn't any other explanation that would make sense! Not that magic made that much sense.
