Fandom High Welcome Picnic, Front Lawn of the School, All Day: Part II

As the heat continued to bear down on the lawn, many of the tables and chairs were set up in the spots where there was shade, so no one got overheated or anything. That would be very rude for the first day in Fandom, after all.

[OCD is up! This is the picnic post for general mingling. Roommates, fake siblings and teachers are all here. Since it's outside, the picnic is open to all students, teachers, and townies!]

Maeve was not trying to be social over here. She was only even intending to stay long enough to get a feel for what kind of place this was, so she found a spot to sit and watch, and look vaguely threatening.

"What on Earth happened to your hair?"

That came out a little judgey.

"Erm. What a fun shade of pink!" Tahani tried again.

"Nuclear accident right next door to my hair salon. Thousands dead. More scarred for life. I'm lucky this is all that happened to me," Maeve deadpanned.

"How terrible!" Tahani said, all faux-concern. "Was there a benefit concert?"

Oh good. She already had found doofy Jackson, this was obviously the new Ruby.

"No."

"Sir Elton should be ashamed of himself," Tahani decided. "I'm Tahani al-Jamil. Welcome to...here. Did you know you were coming here?"

"Yes?" Maeve said, tilting her head. "Why?"

"Oh, sometimes people freak out," Tahani told her. "They get confused about the year--" her, "--having a roommate--" also her, "--people who look like rats--" still her, "you know. The usual."

"My roommate's a cat person. So."

Having a hard time wrapping her brain about that one.

"Mae?" Tahani asked, "or is there another one?"

Please, please don't let there be another one.

"Yep," she said, and sighed when she said, "I'm Maeve."

She was going to get mixed up with a talking cat.

"That is unfortunate," Tahani said, wrinkling her nose up.

"It'll be fine."

Maeve was going to keep telling herself that.

"How comfortable are you being known as 'Not the cat girl'?" Tahani asked.

"Go with Maeve." There would be no other option.

"I'll try, but it might be difficult," Tahani said. "I'm on the radio and I've already reduced two men named Steve to Tattoos and Pecs. In my defense, they are extremely dishy."

See Maeve's eyebrows? See them going just way up? These were the eyebrows of a person with an actual name.

Karolina was not the type to be deterred by anyone's vaguely threatening air. For one, well, a guidance counselor couldn't really get intimidated by the students, and for two... This girl vaguely reminded her of Nico.

So, she and her basket with glittery gift bags were coming over, with a little wave of greeting.

"Hey there."

"Hey," Maeve said, eyeing her a little suspiciously. She looked perky.

She was so perky. Sorry, Maeve.

"You just got here, right?" Karolina asked. "I'm Karolina. I'm the guidance counselor for this school."

"I swear I didn't do it," Maeve said dryly.

It would have been her standard answer, but she was a little worried that that whole expulsion thing was about to get her a cheerful warning.

"I'm not here because you're in trouble," Karolina replied, as close to dry as she got, which was... not very. "Just here saying hi, and to welcome you to the school."

Hence the glittery gift bag she was pulling out of her basket, right now.

"Wait. Seriously?"

This was almost as weird as the talking cat roommate.

"Yeah, seriously," Karolina replied, all too earnest. "Here."

She held out the gift bag for Maeve to take.

Inside it was a map of the island, another of where all the classrooms were located at the school, a $5 gift card to the Perk, and a handwritten little card with Karolina's contact info on it.

"Just to get you started."

"Thanks," Maeve said, cautiously, taking the bag and peeking inside it. "Seriously?"
