Fandom High Welcome Picnic, Front Lawn of the School, All Day: Part II

As the heat continued to bear down on the lawn, many of the tables and chairs were set up in the spots where there was shade, so no one got overheated or anything. That would be very rude for the first day in Fandom, after all.

[OCD is up! This is the picnic post for general mingling. Roommates, fake siblings and teachers are all here. Since it's outside, the picnic is open to all students, teachers, and townies!]

Feeling a little rattled, Miles took a seat near a table and brought out his sketch book. Not finding any true inspiration he began sketching the castle that was apparently his new school.

"So weird."

Astrid was definitely on her way to doing her usual sitting on the sidelines and drawing some of the more visually interesting new students, but she couldn't help noticing one of those new students already at it.

"You're an artist?" she guessed, tilting her head, wanting to see what he was drawing without being rude, her own sketchbook under her arm, pencil behind her ear.

Miles looked up from his book, a little wary after the bus trip and such.

"Uh, yeah," he said turning the book around so the girl could see. "Or at least I like to think so. I'm Miles."

And now that the book was turned, Astrid took it in with an interested, naturally critical but forgiving eye.

"That's not too bad," she said, and looked back over at the new guy. "I'm Astrid."

Then there was a moment of hesitation before she asked, "Mind if I sit?"

These things were still awkward for her, but knowing a new kid was probably even more awkward helped, especially if there was already a common ground. And as far as the usual run of people went, this guy...seemed pretty...normal.

Which for Fandom was actually little weird.

"Uh, yeah. Sure!" he said feeling a little relieved to talk to someone else who at least looked somewhat normal. "You new here too?"

Because maybe there was another bus? Or maybe people were just dropped off here?

Astrid set down her sketchbook and took a seat, wondering what it said about her that she could still get that question. But she shook her head.

"No," she said, "I've been going here for a while now," with a faint pause before she added, "on and off..."

She was mostly looking at the table when she said that, then looked up when she asked, "Where are you from?" Then a small apologetic smile. "You'll probably get that question a lot."

"Brooklyn. On Earth, I guess? Not that I'm guessing where I'm from but that's not just a simple question anymore," he said rubbing the back of his neck. "Someone said this school was non-traditional but I had no idea this is what they meant. How about you? Different planet? Another time period?"

"You catch on quick," Astrid noted. A lot quicker than she had, but to her credit, she was.going through a lot of stuff at the time. "Same planet, different coast. L.A. And different time, too. It's 1993 where I'm from."

"Whoa," Miles said blinking a couple of times before responding. "So this is the future for you then? I bet that was pretty wild."

At least he didn't have that issue to deal with.

"Wait. What year is it here?"

"2020," Astrid offered with a smile, "and still not a flying car in sight."

Har har, time traveller humor.

"It's definitely been a trip, but it's not really that different, either. It's mostly just technology and fashion and the environment definitely didn't much better, either."

"Hello," Shuri said, "you look petrified. You must be new. I'm Shuri."

“I wouldn’t say I’m petrified,” Miles said still looking petrified. “I’m just not sure what’s going on. And I’m Miles Morales. Totally freaked out guy from Brooklyn.”

"Oh, like Captain America," Shuri said, nodding. "I am not from Brooklyn."

The accent gave that away.

"I am from Wakanda."

“Captain America? I don’t think I know who that is.”

Stupid Sony universe.

“And I’m afraid I’ve never heard of Wakanda. Is that another planet?”

Shuri looked around the park. "He's a large white man with blond hair who looks like he will corner you and check to make sure you've eaten vegetables and voted, but in a nice way," she said. "You generally can't miss him. And Wakanda is a nation in Africa. It's okay if you haven't heard of us--Americans are terrible at geography."

And Wakanda had kept itself to itself for centuries.

“Hey! We’re-“

Yeah, he can’t argue with that.

“Actually that’s pretty true. I have to say it’s nice to meet another person from a normal Earth.”

"Who else have you met?" Shuri said. "Was it Mae?"

"I met a Maeve but she was on the bus with me," Miles offered. "But I met Alana who is an alien from another planet. And apparently my big sister. And apparently there's a girl name Freya who looks like a humanoid rat."

He shook his head. "It's going to be an adjustment."

"Oh, definitely," Shuri agreed. "Mae is a cat girl, to with the humanoid rat."

That didn't help, Shuri.

"Hey, you're new, right?"

Brace yourself, Miles. Guidance counselor, incoming! Karolina was making her way over, pulling a glittery little gift bag from the basket she was carrying in the crook of one arm.

"Welcome to Fandom High!"

“Uh. Yeah. I’m new,” Miles said wondering if someone had put a sign above his head. Then again there weren’t that many kids as he thought there would be here. “I’m Miles.”

He did have a name tag on him ~~probably~~, and Karolina knew all the old students by their faces, so there was that?

"Nice to meet you, Miles!" she said, smiling brightly. "I'm Karolina, I'm the guidance counselor here at the school. And here's a little thing to welcome you to the island."

She held out the little gift bag for him. Inside it - if he chose to take it - he would find a map of the island, another of where all the classrooms were located at the school, a $5 gift card to the Perk, and a handwritten little card with Karolina's contact info on it.

“Oh! Thanks!” Miles said an actual smile coming to his face as he took his gift. “Thank you! I.. appreciate it.”

"You're welcome," Karolina replied, kind of beaming. Then she tilted her head a little bit. "So, how's it gone so far? Your big sib get you settled okay?"

“Yeah, yeah, she did,” he said with a weak smile. “This whole place is honestly throwing me for a loop so it is nice to have someone I can go to and talk to if I need it.”
