The Library is Open (04/06)

Rory staggered in and opened the library during second period, nursing her second cup of coffee and looking very much the worse for wear.

[Goin' up early like whoa so I can sleep in and not worry about it. Rory'll be available for interaction around 1 EST.]

It's always bad to be caught muttering to a hallucination who's currently wearing a very bright gold cap and gown.

"Ask her where to find the books on fossils!"

"Shut up," John says tightly. Turning quickly to Rory, he says, "Not you. Um. I'm looking for something on psychology."

"That's this way," Rory said worriedly, motioning for John to follow. "Um. Are you going to talk to someone about this whole -" she flailed a hand out "- thing?"

"Oh, that was nothing."

Scorpius pouted at being called nothing.

"I was just really tired that day. Kinda hysterical," he says, following Rory. "I'm better now."

"Good," Rory said, running a hand over her hair. "I'm already going crazy. Don't need to worry about you doing it too."

She came to a stop in front of a section of books. "Okay, anything specific on psych? Or just generalities?"

"Disorders," he says. "For an extra credit project."

"I am not a disorder, John."

"No, you're a fungus. Shut up," he mutters quietly.

"Okay," she said slowly, selecting a few books. "We've got some stuff here about...hallucinations, schizophrenia, and multiple personality disorder." She pulled them off the shelf, looking worried again. "Unless you wanted something different."

"All of them," he says. "I mean, I'll take a few of them."

"She's short." Scorpius has his head tilted and he's staring at Rory.

"No, she's not." A swipe near his shoulder and he smiles at Rory. "How're you doing?"

"Not my best," Rory replied, looking curious. "Do we have gnats in here again?"

"Yes, that's what you are," John says, talking to some area near his shoulder. "A gnat. Shut up."

The first part of her answer catches his attention. "Oh? Anything I can do?"

"Not...really," Rory said, really staring now. "Is the gnat talking to you?"

"You need to give me a name, John." Scorpius is back in his cap and gown. "I can't graduate without a name."

"You can be IP Freely," John snaps. "And no, it's not. I'm thinking out loud."

Frowning, he asks, "You gonna be all right?"

"No," Rory said. "I mean, eventually, yeah, but right now...."

She trailed off, and reached over to wave a hand through the air by John's head.

"Your friends think you're going insane, John."

"No kidding." John watches Rory wave her hand around and frowns again. "Small gnat. I'm sorry you're not feeling good. Sucks."

"Breakups are hard," Rory said distractedly, looking at the air. "Must be tiny. Why are you talking to it?"

"Because I don't know," John answers distractedly. "I just am. It's a friendly gnat."

"Break up what?"

"Is it talking to you?" Rory asked. "And yeah, breakup. The thing that's not happening really isn't happening now because there was a breakup."

"She's far too pale for any one man to stand, John. Obviously her downfall." Scorpius tsk's softly.

John purses his lips and glares at Scorpius...who isn't really there.

"You're a giant jackass," he says angrily, pointing at nothing. "Go play solitaire."

And turning back to Rory, he frowns. "Oh geez. I'm sorry, Rory."

"Gnats play solitaire?" Rory asked. "And no, it's fine. I'm dealing. Maybe I should get a gnat friend to distract myself with."

"No, jackasses do," John mutters, shaking his head and swatting near his ear. "Anyways, you shouldn't have to deal with something like this. You know you can talk to me."

"And me!" Scorpius, the freak version of Dear Abby."

"Shut up, leatherface."

Rory nodded. "I might take you up on that. Maybe. If your, um, gnat isn't going to mind."

"At least you can see something," John mutters. "Aeryn says there's nothing there. I can see him, though."

"Um," Rory said. "There isn't anything there. I just figured it was too small for me to see."

"She's lying, John. I'm too complex, too heavy for her to see. They're trying to make you crazy."

John's shoulders just sag. "Oh. Sorry. Um, I should go."

"Should I call someone?" Rory asked, reaching out to touch his arm, worry etched in her features.

"Aeryn's the only who knows," he says quietly. "It doesn't matter."
