Fandom High Welcome Picnic, Front Lawn of the School, All Day: Part II

The good weather continued throughout the day, making it very comfortable to be out on the lawn. Who would want to miss such a nice picnic?

[OCD is up! This is the picnic post for general mingling. Roommates, fake siblings and teachers are all here. Since it's outside, the picnic is open to all students, teachers, and townies!]

"So Duke's just special, huh?" Octavia drawled.

“Danny certainly seemed to think so,” Liam said, slight emphasis on the name of the person who had, you know, done the arresting.

Which Octavia knew! At least on the rational level. And that Liam had apparently already given him a talking to about it.

Coupled with Haven, though, this had dragged up some issues.

But, anyway: "If he ever tries that again, I'm punching him."

He hadn’t exactly been pleased about it!

“I get that? But technically, that’s assault, and the sort of thing that would get you arrested too,” he reminded her mildly. “Hopefully it’s a moot point, though.”

Of course you didn't, Octavia. That was how you got arrested in Haven!

It looked a lot like his regular face. Because he’d met you, Octavia.

Octavia's tone got just a little more dry, if such a thing was even possible. "Just wanted to make that clear."

Honestly, they were lucky she hadn't already tried to beat Danny up this time.

“It’s plenty clear,” Liam assured her, with the slightest hint of a smile.

Octavia didn't smile, though that was probably not much of a surprise.

"Is it clear that I hated that happening, too?"

"Plenty," Liam nodded. "Hell, it's not like I was a fan myself. For the record."

Though he hadn't been as upset as she had been, for obvious reasons.

And that was all she was going to say about that, before dropping the subject with a glance towards the food tables. "School's gone as plentiful as ever."

"And you came prepared," Liam said, with a nod towards that bag she was carrying.

"Wasn't entirely on purpose," she admitted, idle and mild. "But it works in my favor. Should've done this before, too."

Instead of just taking what fit in her pockets.

“So if it wasn’t for snacks, what was the bag for?” Liam couldn’t help but ask.

"Just something I had to do before I came here," Octavia replied, very casualy for something she was actually excited about. But with her habit of stoicism, that wasn't actually very hard to do. "I might tell you later."

But until Duke found out, she wasn't spoiling it for anyone.

"Well, I look forward to hearing about it," Liam told her.

Too bad he probably wouldn't end up hearing about it, all things considered. Unless Duke was the kind of guy who hit up his school office on weekends.

Hey now, he might still hear about it! Just, not from her.

Or in any kind of a fun context.

"Anyway." She shrugged a little. "Are you teaching anything this summer?"

Liam shook his head. "Didn't want to be committed to too much," he explained, and now it was his turn to be kind of cagey.

"Although," he added sheepishly. "I did sign up to take classes." Which was different, because there wasn't any actual responsibility on his part there besides showing up. Also it was the first time he was doing something like that.

"That was an option?" Octavia asked, a little surprised. "Thought they were just for the... kids."

She was not that much older than the oldest students. It felt weird to refer to them like that.

(Also, don't think she'd missed the cageyness, even if she didn't go right in to poke at it.)

She was older than Liam by more than a decade and he referred to the students as ‘kids’!

“For the summer, yeah,” Liam nodded. “And I figured, well, this is probably the closest thing to school I’ll ever manage to attend, so why not give it a try?”

Octavia hadn't basically skipped being a teenager, like some people. It was different!

"Huh," she said.

And then didn't say anything else, although she was clearly thinking about something, with a very faint frown.

"Nothing."

That was the kneejerk response, after which she reconsidered with a tiny shrug. "Just... wondering, I guess."

"If you would have signed up for anything, had you known?" Liam guessed.

"Something like that."

She didn't really know how classes worked. She hadn't had to sign up for the only one she'd ever taken. It'd been mandatory for all the juvenile prisoners.

"Do you... think it's too late to even think about, now?"
