Library is Open, 4/5

[swerval_zero]

Zero opened up the library, as was usual for her on Wednesdays, and briefly disappeared into the stacks looking for something to occupy her time. She returned with The Pearl Blade, the third in the "Jewels of the Caribbean" series by Angelica Demesnes, her new favorite author.

"The what?" Peter asked, enjoying himself.

"The Pearl Blade," Zero repeated. She was now approximately the same shade of red as a fire hydrant.

"The Pearl... Oh! Angelica Demesnes, right?" Peter asked. "My aunt loves those books."

"Nope. I got her the boxed set for her birthday," Peter said.

"There's a boxed set?" Zero's fingers did not itch to get on the computer and add it to her Amazon wishlist. They really didn't.

"Yep," Peter confirmed. "You seem pretty interested in the boxed set considering that you just found it laying around."

"I don't know what you're talking about." Her face was the picture of innocence. "I just think Arsenal might be amused by them."

"I believe you," said Peter, who totally didn't. "So, ninja romance aside, what's going on? Just another quiet day in the library?"

"Yeah, y'know, books, boredom...bad romance novels. The usual."

"So the bad romance novels are a common thing here?" Peter asked. He found it cute so he couldn't help but tease her about it.

"Maybe just a little." Zero doesn't mind the teasing.

"Absolutely nothing to be embarrassed about," Peter said. "I mean, no way would I ever read them because my brain goes numb if I try to read the blurb on the back, but still."

"They--it's actually kind of funny. I mean, if you're into that kind of thing."

"How are they funny?" Peter asked, making sure to use the plural pronoun.

"It's just so implausible. There're all these ninjas and sheikhs running around the Caribbean--and I think this girl's supposed to be half Apache, except it said Seminole one time, too, and she's from Florida, so Seminole would make more sense. An' it's set in seventeen forty-something."

Peter just stared for a moment. "Let me see it," he requested. "I want to see this historical silliness."

Zero consented and brought the book out into the open. "Here."

Peter flipped to a random page. After reading for a minute, he looked up and asked, "Where is this set?"

"Part of it's in Florida, and part's in Brazil. But it says Caribbean on the cover."

"Okay," Peter said, thinking about this. "Then why is there a grizzly bear in this part? Grizzlies aren't native to Florida or Brazil."

"Where did a pirate get a grizzly bear?" Peter asked, letting a small laugh escape.

Zero knew the answer to that question, but it was in one of the previous books in the series, and she was sticking to her 'I haven't read the others' story. "I have no idea."

"Sure you don't," Peter said, smirking. "But I'm really curious about this. Will you tell me where a pirate got a grizzly if I bribe you?"
