Zero opened up the library, as was usual for her on Wednesdays, and briefly disappeared into the stacks looking for something to occupy her time. She returned with The Pearl Blade, the third in the "Jewels of the Caribbean" series by Angelica Demesnes, her new favorite author.

Angela waved to Zero as she came in. She looked slightly less miserable than she had the day before. "Hey. Has Janet come in yet?"

"Nope ~~unless she does~~."

Angela wrinkled her nose a little at that. "Eh. I was hoping she had dropped something off for me, but it can wait."

She nodded at the paperback. "What're you reading?"

"Crazy romance novel. This woman is nuts, really."

"Is it the same woman who wrote the one with the pirate-ninja girl and the guy who was, like, an Indian and Scottish? Because that was kind of funny, in a weird way."

"Yeah, the girl in this one is the Scottish-Indian guy's sister, and she's been kidnapped by a mercenary who's half-Mexican, half-Chinese or something."

Angela scratched her forehead. "Okay, is it wrong that the idea of a mercenary who's half-Mexican and half-Chinese makes me kind of hungry? Though I'm not sure I want refried beans in my lo mein."

"Hee. I could really go for some of my da's gazpacho."

"Mmmm. It'll be better in a few months, though. When the tomatoes are really ripe."

"I should tell my dad to add gazpacho to his menu."

"Now you're making me hungry."

"I'm sorry!" Angela said, throwing up her hands in mock defeat. "Maybe I shouldn't have skipped breakfast."

"Most important meal of the day, they say," Zero agreed. She opened a drawer of the desk and pulled out a bag of pretzels. "Would these help?"

"Probably," Angela said, grabbing a handful. "Thanks."

As she chewed, she eyed Zero speculatively. "So ... did you hear Marty had to go away for a while?"

"No! Did he have to go home? Is something wrong?"

"Not exactly," Angela said. "I mean, it's a long story, and I only understand about half of it? But basically some stuff happened this weekend -- people he used to work with got in touch with him -- and he has to make sure his mom is safe. And that he is. He can't come back until he knows he's safe."

She sighed. "I got flowers from him this morning. I'm just trying to believe he'll be okay."

"I'm sure he'll be fine. He's quick on his feet. And smart." Zero thought back to her first acquaintance with Marty and thought, Okay, maybe not that smart, but she didn't say that to Angela. She didn't need to hear that.

Angela shook her head. "Parker said the same thing, and she added that he's calmer than he used to be. Which is true. But -" she flailed. "One of him, a whole bunch of other people with guns, you know?"

"Not that I'm helping by obsessing about the worst."

"Maybe your way works. I mean, if you're expecting the worst, when it comes out all right you're pleasantly surprised. I'd opt for cautious optimism, though."

"Right. New middle name: Angela Cautious-Optimism Chase," Angela sighed. "Because otherwise, I will drive myself crazy."

[OOC: THANK YOU. Am just staying away from subject.]

"It's a good name for you." Zero is not considering naming her firstborn Cautious Optimism. Really.

Janet showed up at the library, entirely too early in the morning, with Marty's laptop.

Angela waved. "Hey, is that for me?"
