How To Be Civilized, Friday, Period 3

"This week we're going to have an easy class," Seivarden said, smiling at the students. "This might seem like a silly thing, but as I know most people on the island have a problem with it, I felt it needed to be adressed."

She gestured at a table where food has been arranged, a selection similar to what you would find at a Fandom picnic. Mainly finger food.

"Never, ever, eat food with bare hands. Not even with a knife and fork of course, but definitely not finger food. There's cutlery available, although of course you can eat pastries with your hands, but don't stain your gloves like a five year old."

Looking around the classroom, Seivarden continued: "Well, that should be easy enough. And of course there's tea for you all."

She's here! And wishing there were far more people in this class to hear this particular lecture, and also feeling morbidly curious how this one would go over with certain classmates who shall not be named.

And vaguely wondering how painful it might have been for Seivarden to have actually gone and picked out all that finger food while, of course, helping herself to some to be eaten properly with the provided cutlery.

Forget it needed a class; Tisarwat half wondered if they could put together a school-wide assembling. Including whoever in the administration was responsible for the welcome picnic food selection.

"There's pizza," she said, witheringly, knowing she didn't need to elaborate, nor would she want to. "But at least the breakfasts on Monday morning are almost always foods that are best eaten with cutlery, though not everyone always does, and it's appaling how some people don't even think to use a napkin after they've eaten something messy with their hands."

Please don't make her elaborate on what they did instead, Seivarden. This was a classroom.

"I mostly just avoid the common rooms, though, if I'm eating. Except for breakfast on Monday, because that's tradition."

And now she was wondering if she should disclose to Seivarden the horror that was Wayne's tea drinking habits, but there was probably enough disturbing content going on for one day.

To that, Tisarwat made a face of her own, and only shook her head, her gesture a little warning in nature, because she was sure that Seivarden wouldn't want to know, just as she was sure that she wouldn't want to be the one to tell her.

She was fairly sure Eleanor wasn't even here any more, and yet Eleanor would always live on in her nightmares.

Shuri's hand shot up. "But what if you are in countries where they primarily eat with their hands?"

Never go to Ethiopia, Seivarden. Or Ghana.

"There are countries where they wash their hands first, of course, but mostly eat with their fingers."

See, the nice thing about Traditional Morning Breakfast was that at this point Nina had a lot of experience in eating her breakfast with gloves on.

Nina had salad, a sandwich, and some popcorn.

And, like, eating popcorn with a spoon was actually neater than eating it with her hands anyway, so this wasn't proving much of a challenge for her, even if she did feel silly eating a sandwich with cutlery.

And was eyeing the chips speculatively.

Like, they were too big for a spoon. Stabbing them with a fork would result in chip-bits everywhere, and a knife would result in the same thing.

Not eating them was probably the more civilized thing to do and yet

"So brown gloves, then?" Shuri mused, writing down some notes.

"So this is something that staff should figure out in advance, then, to match your gloves to the food being served," Shuri said. "Ethiopian cuisine has a lot of red sauces because of the chilis, so...red gloves there, I suppose."

Mae . . . was not listening to the lecture. Mae was admiring her hands covered in what were clearly used gym socks. Especially the fact that this time, she didn't have weird extra long fingers to deal with. . . .
