"This week we're going to have an easy class," Seivarden said, smiling at the students. "This might seem like a silly thing, but as I know most people on the island have a problem with it, I felt it needed to be adressed."

She gestured at a table where food has been arranged, a selection similar to what you would find at a Fandom picnic. Mainly finger food.

"Never, ever, eat food with bare hands. Not even with a knife and fork of course, but definitely not finger food. There's cutlery available, although of course you can eat pastries with your hands, but don't stain your gloves like a five year old."

Looking around the classroom, Seivarden continued: "Well, that should be easy enough. And of course there's tea for you all."

Shuri's hand shot up. "But what if you are in countries where they primarily eat with their hands?"

Never go to Ethiopia, Seivarden. Or Ghana.

"There are countries where they wash their hands first, of course, but mostly eat with their fingers."

"Then you bring your own cutlery, or at least wear gloves in a colour where the stains won't be to obvious."

"So brown gloves, then?" Shuri mused, writing down some notes.

"It depends on the colour of the food," Seivarden said.

At least she was paying attention.

"So this is something that staff should figure out in advance, then, to match your gloves to the food being served," Shuri said. "Ethiopian cuisine has a lot of red sauces because of the chilis, so...red gloves there, I suppose."

"Exactly," Seivarden said. "You could also ask the staff to provide you with suitable gloves."

Mae . . . was not listening to the lecture. Mae was admiring her hands covered in what were clearly used gym socks. Especially the fact that this time, she didn't have weird extra long fingers to deal with. . . .

"Are you wearing socks on your hands?" Seivarden asked, as patiently as she could, which was not very patiently at all.

Mae looked at her hands, which were very, very clearly covered in socks.

"No?"

Seivarden wrinkled her nose.

"Dirty socks."

"Yes," Seivarden said. "It is absurd. So why are you doing it?"

"Did you know that the German word for 'gloves' translates to 'hand finger shoes'?" Mae asked.

"No, and I don't care," Seivarden said. "That's still not an excuse to wear dirty socks on your hands."

"I'm not wearing dirty socks on my hands." She used the laundry room just as often as anyone else! Almost as often as anyone else.

On a semi-regular basis, anyway.

"What kind of idiot would wear dirty socks on her hands?"

Mae blinked back at her. She was imagining a variety of very uncivilized activities she could be getting up to right now with a baseball bat, a dumpster, and possibly a pet possum.

"I once found a candy bar on the roof of the Food Donkey back home," she said. "It was unwrapped and everything." She narrowed her eyes at Seivarden. "And then I ate it!"
