Fandom High Welcome Picnic, Front Lawn of the School, Saturday, All Day

However weather magic worked around here on any given day, the weather for the welcome picnic wasn't all that bad. It was a little chilly outside (50F/10C), but not as awful as January could be, and the bonfire in the middle of the lawn was providing a nice amount of warmth. No one noticed who specifically put the cute presents around it, but the gifts looked harmless and ignoring non-dangerous weird things was just how a lot of people coped with living here, okay?

The food was ready, the tables and chairs had been spread across the lawn, and everything was ready to welcome a new batch of folks to the island!

Octavia would also do well to enjoy these few hours where everyone she cared about was actually present and accounted for.

She nodded. "And... Thanks for the present."

There were like five things in her bedroom now, with the addition of that plant.

“You’re welcome,” he said easily. “I know you’re not really, into plants or anything,” despite where she worked, “but it’s useful.” That’s the part he’d figured she’d like, or at least appreciate.

Being kind of into the medicinal and other helpful uses of plants was actually why Octavia worked where she did. But that was not very common knowledge.

Also meant she really did appreciate him thinking about that.

She nodded. "Seems like it has a ton of uses." Of course she'd already researched it beyond what was on his note. Of course. "I always like that."

Yeah, he’d meant the part where the job mostly seemed to involve arranging ornamental stuff. The liking useful stuff in general, that much he’d just picked up from various things she’d said (and the state of her apartment).

“I know.” A beat. “How’s things?” He wasn’t going to ask ‘how were your holidays?’ given their last discussion, and she worked in town, not at the school, so ‘break’ didn’t really work either.

"Everyone's come back." Yeah, even if Octavia said that casually, it was still what she felt was the biggest news of the moment. "And there were a couple of parties in town for New Year's. That's about it."

That was more of an overview of what had been going on since he'd been gone than a 'how's things?', but... Octavia.

“You go to any of ‘em?” Liam asked, his voice going distant for just a moment there. Something about what she’d said, everyone’s come back, that he couldn’t quite put his finger on.

... Liam was kind of sorry he'd missed that, yes.

"I just," he frowned, trying to put it into words. "A feeling? Something's not right."

And not just attending, but dancing at one of them, too! It had truly been a New Year's miracle.

She frowned at him. "Something like how?"

"People that are supposed to be here," Liam said. "But they're not."

"Huh," Octavia said. "Were you expecting someone in particular, or...?"

"No," Liam shook his head. "But there's no new students, no new teachers," he pointed out, gesturing to the smaller-than-usual picnic crowd. "Doesn't that seem a bit weird?"

"I guess," Octavia said, looking around. But, she didn't tend to take much note of how many people were usually at these things, because she mostly just showed up to eat and stock up and then get the hell out of there. "I don't know."
