Fandom High Welcome Picnic, Front Lawn of the School, All Day: Part II

The weather was warm, the food smelled good, and there was a good chance the new folks were a little extra glittery. What else could go into a perfect day for the picnic?

[OCD is up! This is the picnic post for general mingling. Roommates, fake siblings and teachers are all here. Since it's outside, the picnic is open to all students, teachers, and townies!]

"Smart parents," Trevor said, pointing at him like he'd hit the jackpot there.

"Mmm...."

Norman was going to just kind of hum and wave a hand around in a so-so gesture.

"Smart enough to avoid that nest of bug-fucking crazy?" Trevor corrected slowly.

"Lazy enough that they only bothered with it around Christmas and Easter," Norman clarified, sighing.

Trevor made a face. "Worst time of the year. Everyone pretends to be extra pious."

Liars.

"Yeah, Dad used to try to claim it's what his mom would have wanted, at least until he had to accept that I wasn't kidding when I told him that she was calling him a jackass again."

Funnily enough, that hadn't gone over well at all any time Norman had said it about Grandma Babcock before it was undeniable that he could talk to ghosts.

"People can put all sorts of words into the mouths of the dead," Trevor replied sagely. Then kind of just squinted at him for a moment. "You some kind of seer?"

Norman paused a moment. And then kind of shifted his weight a little uncomfortably, and shrugged.

"I think that's exactly the word for it, yeah," he admitted, fidgeting with the corners of his comic book. "It kind of runs in the family."

A beat.

"On my mom's side."

Not that his mother had believed it was real, either.

Trevor shrugged and glanced away because man did Norman looks all kinds of uncomfortable. "Can't really help that, can you? Anyone gives you trouble..."

He didn't want to say that he'd kick their ass, but... he'd kick their ass. Because he was the classic Knight in Sour Armor. And Norman was a nice person.

"Thanks," Norman replied, smiling a little. "People here have been pretty okay about it, at least. I guess once you've been on the island long enough, there's weirder stuff to deal with than a kid who can talk to the dead."

Even zombie babies.

"It happened back home sometimes," Trevor said. "There's this travelling group, call themselves Speakers. They tend to have a few seers or magic users in there little pods."

And they were okay. You know. Even though everyone was a horrible piece of shit if you asked him.

"A few of them?" Norman's eyes went a little wide at that. "What did they do?"

"Travel around. Collect stories. Help people when they can." Did he sound almost wistful?

Norman chewed on his bottom lip for a moment, just picturing that.

"... That sounds... really nice, actually."

He definitely sounded wistful.

"But naive, but it seems to work for them," Trevor added, shaking himself to clear his head.

Norman offered Trevor a small, wry smile.

"Lucky them, huh?"

"Yeah," Trevor sighed. "Of course, all the things they learn have to be memorized. They don't write shit down."

"You know, weirdly, that doesn't really surprise me," Norman noted. "My family wasn't even good at passing down what we are from one generation to the next."

He'd kind of had to figure it out for himself. Which made for some great times when you didn't even realize that the family power meant that you were expected to read a bedtime story to an angry ghost once a year.

Yeah, maybe just a quick note from your ancestors? It'd prevent so much bullshit, right?

"My family had an entire library of all the things we'd learned over the generations."

And now it was locked because no one had told the only surviving kid how to access it.

Norman's most helpful ancestor had been a stinky old hermit with a fear of hummus and some terrible halitosis.

So...

"That sounds useful," he offered.

NORMAN, THAT WAS A BAD ANCESTOR.

"Writing things down. Who could have known?"

TRUST HIM, HE KNEW.

"The modern miracle of pen and ink," Norman replied, grinning faintly. "Will wonders never cease?"
