Working Together - Monday, 3rd Period

The room was set up with the confidence course down the middle.

On one of the other walls was a projected list:

DANDELION
NERF
GRAVE DIRT
NATTO
JOYSTICK
TRAIN

"Welcome back. Your team captains so far have been Lana, Prompto, and Norman. You've walked past the confidence course, thrown it aside, and gone over it. Time for a new captain and a new way to do the course.

Today's exercise might take more than today. You have until next class to complete it because it will take you outside this room. It's a scavenger hunt with a twist. The rules:

If you know what the word is, you aren't allowed to be the person who retrieves the item. Nor are you allowed to lead others to the item or tell them where to find it or what it is. You are only allowed to answer yes or no questions about it and you may only answer with yes or no. Internet searches are not allowed.

The team captain is responsible for collecting all the items - and it can be the actual item or a photo representation of the item as long as you first went out and found the item first.

Chat about the scavenger hunt. Figure out who knows what. Make a plan.

There was a long pause, and then Norman sighed.

"I kinda know what all of those things are," he noted. And then frowned a little. "And I think that grave dirt one is kind of rude..."

How would you like it if someone came digging up your final resting place, huh?

"Oh? Why?" Jack asked.

"Well," Norman fidgeted a little. "I mean... none of the graves on the island are fresh, you know? So that one... kind of asks us to turn earth on somebody's final resting place, and... I mean..."

Aaand he was fidgeting even more, now.

"That's... not... okay."

Because someone wasn't going to just go and add, 'because I'm the only one here who can ask the ghosts permission but because I know what it is, I'm not allowed to be the one to get it.'

"It can be a photo," Jack shrugged, "Doesn't have to be the actual item as long as you guys went and took the picture yourself. Let's not be digging up any actual graves because yeah, that'd be rude."

Norman hesitated a moment, and then he nodded a little.

"That sounds better," he admitted, "if pictures of the grass are okay..."

"As long as it can be identified as a grave, yes," Jack said.

And there was Norman, actually breathing out a little sigh of relief.

"Okay," he said, "then the real challenge is going to be finding someone in the group who... doesn't know what a grave is."

They were pretty universal, he thought.

"Some of those seem pretty basic," Okuyasu mused out loud. "What if we all know what one of them is?"

"Then none of you will be able to retrieve that item," Jack answered simply, "You'll have to figure out how to have it retrieved, without telling anyone where it is or doing anything but answering yes or no questions."

Okuyasu opened his mouth, but was completely at a loss for how that would work out.

"...this is going to be hard."

Jack grinned and said, "Yup."

"I know what all of those except for one is," said Prompto, although he was was really wondering how even he, photographic genuis that he was, could capture a concept like taking something that was totally too overpowered in a video game and making it less so (and how a term like nerfing managed to make it into the lexicon of a world that didn't even have the things that the term was based on was beyond anyone's reasoning), "so I guess natto is mine?"

"Same here," Lana said. "Though I guess I could argue I'm not entirely sure which" could she say flower? hm. "...type of the thing it is, a dandelion is. Does that count?"

".....yyeessssss?" Prompto ventured, as if he knew, narrowing his eyes in careful consideration before they darted to Jack for potential confirmation. "I mean, if you still need to ask questions to make sure you're retrieving the right one, I'd say that falls under 'not really knowing it' territory."

"That sounds about right to me," Norman offered. "If you want to play twenty questions to figure out which type of the thing the thing is, just to be sure, I mean."

Another pause, and then he added, "that goes for pretty much all of it, really. I can't be the one to get any of this stuff."

Stupid being from Earth and knowing all kinds of interesting dead folks.

"Right." Lana nodded. Most Earth flowers came in one of two colors. "Is it red?"

Norman gave a soft laugh and shook his head.

"No, it's not red."

"Right. Is it yellow?"

And that was Norman, nodding a 'yes.'

"Yeah, it is."

Which didn't narrow things down much, as they stood.

Well, it narrowed it down to yellow!

"Does it grow on the island?"

Norman just gave a soft laugh and a nod of his head.

Where didn't they grow, really?

"Right." Lana grinned. "Want to take a walk around and answer yes/no while I point?"

"I'm pretty sure that's cheating," Norman replied, laughing a little. "But so long as I'm tailing you instead of leading and I'm not actually looking for it myself, that's probably okay?"

It sounded like it was within the letter of the law, if not necessarily the spirit of it.

Lana shrugged. "I'm looking for it, I'm asking questions, you're answering."

Letter of the law was all they needed, right?
