Working Together - Monday, 3rd Period

The room was set up with the confidence course down the middle.

On one of the other walls was a projected list:

DANDELION
NERF
GRAVE DIRT
NATTO
JOYSTICK
TRAIN

"Welcome back. Your team captains so far have been Lana, Prompto, and Norman. You've walked past the confidence course, thrown it aside, and gone over it. Time for a new captain and a new way to do the course.

Today's exercise might take more than today. You have until next class to complete it because it will take you outside this room. It's a scavenger hunt with a twist. The rules:

If you know what the word is, you aren't allowed to be the person who retrieves the item. Nor are you allowed to lead others to the item or tell them where to find it or what it is. You are only allowed to answer yes or no questions about it and you may only answer with yes or no. Internet searches are not allowed.

The team captain is responsible for collecting all the items - and it can be the actual item or a photo representation of the item as long as you first went out and found the item first.

And that was Norman, nodding a 'yes.'

"Yeah, it is."

Which didn't narrow things down much, as they stood.

Well, it narrowed it down to yellow!

"Does it grow on the island?"

Norman just gave a soft laugh and a nod of his head.

Where didn't they grow, really?

"Right." Lana grinned. "Want to take a walk around and answer yes/no while I point?"

"I'm pretty sure that's cheating," Norman replied, laughing a little. "But so long as I'm tailing you instead of leading and I'm not actually looking for it myself, that's probably okay?"

It sounded like it was within the letter of the law, if not necessarily the spirit of it.

Lana shrugged. "I'm looking for it, I'm asking questions, you're answering."

Letter of the law was all they needed, right?

"Then I guess we have a plan," Norman replied, smiling a little. "Is there anything else on the list you don't know?"

Really, it would be interesting when this lot realized that they all had different definitions for 'nerf.'

"I have no idea what natto is, but Prompto claimed that one. I know all the others." Even if she thought a joystick was part of a ship rather than a videogame console.

"Yeaaah, Prompto's going to have fun with natto," Norman noted, wrinkling his nose a bit. "So... I guess we have to somehow find people who don't know what grave dirt is."

There was a pause.

"Do talking animals count?"

"...Maybe? I'm not sure," Lana said.

Norman frowned a little.

"I'd guess that if it can carry on a conversation, it's probably people..."

Lana wasn't sure if it worked that way, but for the purposes of this class... "Why not?"

And Norman was of the opinion that, if it could inform you somehow that it was people, it probably was.

"Why not."

And a nod.

"Come on; let's go dandelion hunt. We can see if we can find anybody along the way who doesn't know what grave dirt is."

"Lead on," Norman replied, grinning. "All you can get out of me are yes and no and the pleasure of my company, after all."

"Not a bad afternoon, then." Lana led the way out the door, looked around on the school lawn, and went over to the first yellow flower she saw. "Is this a dandelion?"

Norman ambled along behind her, looked at the flower in question, and then shook his head.

"Nope."

Buttercup.

Lana nodded and resigned herself to an afternoon of wandering around looking at flowers with Norman. There were worse ways to spend it, really.

"So they have a lot of these flowers where you're from?"

"Of dandelions? Sure do," Norman replied easily. That was a yes answer, after all!

"All the flowers, I mean," Lana clarified. "I was making conversation, not looking for information. I have no idea how many of these are common Earth flowers and how many might be specific to Fandom."

"Oh!" Norman broke into a soft laugh at that. "Yeah, kind of. I mean, Blithe Hollow's one of those small towns pretending it's a city, so everyone's got their little garden or planter box, sure. But there are still wildflowers besides."

"Earth has a lot more different climates than I'm used to on one planet," Lana said. "Dromund Kaas is almost completely jungle, and Korriban's all desert. Is this a dandelion?"

It was sort of yellow. She wasn't taking any chances.

Norman squinted at it.

"I think that's called thimbleweed," he offered. "Also not a dandelion."

... Really, you'd think dandelion would be the first flower they tried.

There were certainly enough of them. Blame whoever kept the school grounds for doing too good a job.

"So you're from a small city, then? Kaas City is huge, and I've never lived anywhere else apart from the temple. What's it like?"

"Blithe Hollow? It's barely a city," Norman replied with a shrug. "It's kind of more like a town with delusions of grandeur. It feels like it needs a gimmick in order to even get people to visit, and the gimmick they picked, other towns do way better, anyway."

Sorry, Blithe Hollow. Salem had you beat.
