Camp Shenanigans [Wednesday morning, May 8, 2019]

Beaker was putting the last of the balloons in place (so...floating away. Don't worry, he'll be fine in a second) on the bleachers that had been set back up in the park in the center of town. There were also a couple of big screen televisions set up so that the crowd could watch the action when the contestents (you lucky volunteers, you!) were outside the park.

It was also a warning to the contestants that this week's game would be taking them out of the park.

"Today, we will be doing a very quick tour of the island!" Anakin yelled into his megaphone. He didn't really need the megaphone--he just liked the way everyone would wince when he made it squeal. "You will be working in teams to complete a series of obstacles I've set up around town. Fastest team to complete the course does not win a fish."

At the blank looks from some of the newbies, Anakin explained. "Last year there was an plastic fish that attained sentience and attacked us at the end of the summer. It was a thing."

Well, "explained" if it also meant "in a way that absolutely did not make it Anakin's fault."

"Listen as your teams are called and where your assingments are! I will then give you ten minutes to get into place and then Beaker--where'd he go?"

Beaker waved and meeped from a tree.

"And Beaker will shoot off the starting pistol which is not a real gun, right Beaker?" Anakin checked.

Beaker meeped affirmatively.

"Well, we'll see how that goes," Anakin muttered.

Heh. Literally.

The first two members of each team (Summer & Vette from Team Chartreuse, Amaya & Janet from Team Puce, and Mae & Billy from Team Cantaloupe) must tie their legs together (good thing everyone has legs!) for a three-legged race from the starting line allll the way through the park and across Apocalypse Avenue and down to the docks to high five their next teammate. Make sure the rope stays tight! If it falls off, you have to start over.

"Okay, let's do this!"

That rope was going to slip right over her skinny little ankles so many times. But so help Vette, standing there looking sharp as heck in her chartreuse shirt (because if anything went with chartreuse, it was blue), she was bound and determined to give this her best shot anyway.

"Oh," said Summer, giving Vette a faint grin, "we have so got this."

Vette was tiny and lithe! So that should help, right? Summer...wasn't, as much, but she was fairly athletic and had managed to hold her own with restrictions much more challenging than a Twi'lek tied to her leg, so it was easy to be a little confident.

"Right! All we have to do is make sure the rope is tied nice and tight."

She paused.

"How are you with knots?"

Restraints were a little more high-tech in her day and age.

... Some three thousand years before Kanan's time or so.

"Oh," said Summer with a confident sort of snort, as she went to grab the rope, "don't you worry about the knots. I've got knot locked down!"

And, as she knelt down to get them all good tied and together, she thought to mention, "Oh, just let me know if it's too tight? Because...yeah."

If you knew what sort of things she sometimes had to tie down, Vette, you'd understand.

"I'm tougher than I look," Vette replied breezily, scootching her foot up so it was nice and snug against Summer's. "Tight as you can get it. You'll cut off your own circulation before you'll cut off mine, I'm sure."

This was not necessarily true. But Vette was nothing if not full of at least slightly false bravado.

"Sounds like a challenge," said Summer, but, yeah, no, she was not going to see how true that was because she'd like to keep her own circulation in tact, thanks. She did a fairly good job of not cutting off anyone's, but still keeping the knot feeling tight enough that they wouldn't have to worry about it coming loose before standing up again.

"Alright, then," she said, nodding to Vette. "Count of three? Start with the untied leg?"

"Count of three," Vette agreed, grinning and putting her hands on her hips. Because clearly, this race needed to start with a pose. "Whenever you're ready!"

You know, Billy wasn't the tallest kid his age, but . . . this was still going to be a bit of a coordination challenge.

"Okay," he said, looking down at the rope in his hands, "I guess . . . we should do this?"

"I've never understood this game," Mae said. "It's, like, bondage for babies."

Weren't you excited to be tied to this kid, Billy?

Thrilled!

"It's --" Billy was going to need a second to blink at that phrase and then decide not to think too hard about it.

"It's usually a dumb forced teamwork exercise," he said, rolling his eyes. "I didn't know this activity was supposed to be torture."

"It's only torture if you're not into it." Mae.

She sized Billy up thoughtfully.

"Are you fast? Because I'm thinking I could just, like, cling to you and you could go."

Yeah, she was not unaware of the glaring height discrepancy, here.

Billy gave some serious thought, for a second, to just going all Captain Sparkle Fingers (except no, Freddy, that was still a terrible name) and flying them both there, but Mr. Scary Dean of Students was running this thing.

"I don't think I'm at my fastest today," he said, because he thought he was hilarious,"but I think that could probably work?"

"I could scream bloody murder at you to make you go faster?" Mae offered.

She really enjoyed screaming.

"I . . . guess it couldn't hurt?" Billy said slowly. Internally wincing.

"It'll be great," Mae assured him. "I'm a really good screamer. And then it's still teamwork!"

Billy snickered. "So, kind of like when you're a little kid riding a bike and you have to make motorcycle noises or the bike won't actually go?"

Darla had tried to convince him of that once.

“I was thinking more that you’d be motivated to move fast because it’s really annoying being screamed at, but sure. Let’s go with your version.”

". . . well, I was thinking that, I just didn't want to say it," Billy admitted. "It works either way. Though . . . you should probably tie yourself to my leg now, so we don't get disqualified or anything like that."

"Right," Mae said. "Mustn't forget the bondage."

And she tied their legs together like one who had at least some regular experience tying things up.

"Ready?" she asked, and then sort of glomped herself at his side and let out an unholy banshee wail.

"Okay, getting tied to a stranger in my first week. This is fun," Janet totally convinced herself.

"Being tied to a stranger's pretty light for the first week, too," Amaya offered with a faint grin that was totally helping, she was sure. "Must be wanting to start you all out easy. Name's Amaya Blackstone." She offered the girl a nod. "So we're a little less strangers now."

"Janet. I guess it could be worse. There could be a fish."

She was so bothered by the fish thing.

"It could be worse," Amaya agreed, with a nod and a smile, "and there could be fish."

The little things like that mattered around here.

"So, are you any good at knots, Janet?"

Amaya knew she was great at them, of course, but, for her, this thing was mostly about the kids having fun, so she wanted to make sure Janet was able to get as much out of it as she might want instead of just taking charge because she knew she could.

"Never even tried," she admitted. "I can hop like a damn champ, though."
