Fandom High Welcome Picnic, Front Lawn of the School, All Day: Part II

As the picnic continued, there were tables and chairs arranged on the lawn, the food smelled delicious and inviting, and no one was going to be bitey without explicit consent. Hopefully, everyone would take some time to enjoy themselves!

[OCD is up! This is the picnic post for general mingling. Roommates, fake siblings and teachers are all here. Since it's outside, the picnic is open to all students, teachers, and townies!]

So this was America, huh. Shuri was pleased by the array of food, but felt like there needed to be music and dancing in order to be a real welcome event.

"Why is so much covered in mayonnaise?" she wondered, poking at various dishes.

Nina was taking a moment to refill her plate with fruit.

"It, like, really is a bit much isn't???????????????" she said, smiling at the new girl. "I think it's because they don't get a proper cook to make any of it!!!!!!!!!!"

She wasn't sure who did prepare any of it--the office moose?--but it clearly wasn't someone like, say, Doctor Lecter.

"Who makes it?" Shuri asked. "This isn't a potluck, is it?"

She'd heard about those on Youtube and been kind of horrified. Who invites people over and tells them to bring their own food?

Nina wasn't actually sure what that was either.

"Um, like, I think the school arranges catering???????????????? Or maybe the office staff makes it??????????? I don't... really know what a potluck is, I'm sorry!!!!" she said, with a laugh.

"I don't either," Shuri admitted. "No one has ever asked me to bring my own food to a party."

"That's what it is????? Oh my gosh, though, like, that would be so rude!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!" Why even throw a party if the guests had to feed themselves? "I don't understand that at all!!!!!!! Is that something that happens here????????????"

Nina laughed.

"Unless, I suppose, like, it was a themed party????????????? Where, like, everyone brings something like a traditional dish from their home?????????? That could be pretty neat, I suppose??????????" Nina beamed at the other girl. "I'm, like, Nina by the way!!!!!!!!!! Nice to meet you!!!!!!!!!!!!!!"

Between Nina and Sidon, Shuri was feeling decidedly mellow here. Everyone was so enthusiastic!

"What ones are you signed up for????????????" Nina asked. "Some of the classes here aren't, really, well... they never would have gotten them at my old school............."

"All of the science ones and something about cooking," Shuri said, pulling her schedule up on her phone.

"Which is the mayonnaise?" Lana asked. She vaguely remembered it was white, but she didn't see a lot of white food here."

"All of the creamy bits to the salads," Shuri said, poking dubiously at them.

"Ah, those." Lana nodded. "I'm not sure why it's there. I just assumed they like the taste of it." She shrugged in apology. "I'm not from around here, either. Lana Beniko." She held out her hand. "You're new here?"

"Came on the antique bus just now," Shuri said, smiling. "I'm Shuri."

Lana laughed. "You mean the one with actual wheels? All the vehicles on the mainland seem to be like that. You're from somewhere with better, too, I take it?"

"I'm from Wakanda," she said. "We're slightly ahead of the curve, yes."

Lana shook her head. "I don't know where that is; I'm sorry. But I'm from Dromund Kaas, and you've probably never heard of it, either, unless you're from my galaxy. The only vehicles we have with physical wheels are some of the heavier tanks and transports; everything else hovers."

Lana nodded. "A number of us are. At least one other student, two of the instructors, and the dean are from my galaxy as well. It's strange to be here in this one, with only one inhabited planet they know of."

"Oh, we had an alien invasion on this world a few years back," Shuri said casually. "At least where I'm from. Big...alien whales in New York called Chitauri. Do you know them?"

Lana shook her head. "There are legends of creatures call purrgil that travel the stars and are sort of like the whales here, but that's the closest I know of, and I don't even know if they're real."

"These sort of ferried aliens who tried to take over, so probably different," Shuri said, writing down the name 'purrgil'--or at least her best attempt at spelling it--"but I'll try to check?"
