Fandom High Welcome Picnic, Front Lawn of the School, All Day: Part II

As the picnic continued, there were tables and chairs arranged on the lawn, the food smelled delicious and inviting, and no one was going to be bitey without explicit consent. Hopefully, everyone would take some time to enjoy themselves!

[OCD is up! This is the picnic post for general mingling. Roommates, fake siblings and teachers are all here. Since it's outside, the picnic is open to all students, teachers, and townies!]

When Nina wasn't bopping around and weaving through tables and chairs just to see who was new and who wasn't and pointedly avoiding a couple of people that she just, like, didn't want to deal with on today of all days, because really...

She was primly seated at a table off to the side, scribbling in her diary and nibbling on goodies. Mostly fruit, honestly, but there were a few cookies in the mix as well.

Eventually she'd go find something more filling, maybe.

"I see I'm not the only one taking advantage of this opportunity to live the good life." Owen was new, and Owen was feeling off-kilter, and so Owen was dealing with that by honing in on an attractive blonde for a good chat in a chipper tone.

Sometimes it helped, chatting.

At the very least, it kept you from standing about looking lost like some kind of idiot.

And he was pretty easy on the eyes himself, so Nina was all for that.

"Of course!!!!!!" she chirped, flashing a brilliant smile his way. "Like, it'd be a shame to waste this sort of chance, wouldn't it???????"

"A girl after my own heart," Owen said, tapping said part of his chest with two fingers. "Have you been here long, or am I just incredibly lucky with my timing?"

Nina tapped her cheek with her pen, pretending to think about that.

"I hadn't gotten bored yet," she mused, "so it can't have been the first option, so it must be your timing!!!!!!! Isn't that great?????????? I'm, like, Nina, by the way!!!!!!!!!! Care to keep me company a bit???????"

"I'm Owen," Owen said, and he wasn't going to waste a second before he was sitting down. (Honest, the flirting was at least 75 percent sublimated nerves at this point.) "By far and away the most charming of the new crop of poor fools that just arrived, I promise you."

Whatever his reasons, it was just... really nice to be flirted with.

She laughed.

"And are you a man of your word?????????" Nina asked playfully. "The sort whose promises mean something???????? Or am I being cruel deceived?????????"

"Honestly, I've no idea, I haven't met most of them yet," Owen said, setting his own plate of sandwiches down. "I'm just making my moves early, making sure I talk to all the pretty people first."

Charmed by both the honesty of his answer and the fact she was included in the pretty people, Nina shifted her plate over to make a little more room for his.

"A valid networking technique," she said, then laughed again. "Shall I do the usual, then, and ask where you're from and if you knew you'd be coming here???????????"

"Those do seem to be the usual questions," Owen affirmed, picking up a sandwich. "I am from a city called Heliost, which you've probably never heard of, in a nation called Bastion, which you've likely also never heard of, and let's not even bother with the planet while we're at it. And no," he said, bringing the sandwich to his mouth, "I didn't."

"You're right on both accounts!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Though I bet you don't know Greenhill, either, so we're the same there and--oh, but it really is terrible, like, how often that happens around here!!!!!!!!"

She was honestly glad that, whatever else happened, Nina had at least been sent here knowing something about the place.

"Were you trying to get somewhere else?????? Or did you, like, get shoved through a portal or something?????????????? Or maybe you don't want to talk about it???????"

"Oh, I'd be happy to talk about it. See, I used to attend this school, but I got bored of it, so I decided to take a bit of a leave of absence," Owen said, and then he didn't say anything for a moment as he took a bite of sandwich and worked on swallowing it. "I decided to wander for a while. I'd just gotten sick of the last place I found myself in, so I decided to blindly pick a strider and go... wherever."

He stretched his arms. "Apparently this is wherever. And wherever has sandwiches."

"It does have sandwiches," she said, amused. "Are, like, the sandwiches an important part of being here?????????????? And how did you get bored of school????????????"

As someone who'd literally grown up in a school, Nina found that hard to picture.

"Free sandwiches are always important," Owen assured her. "As for school, the learning was interesting, I suppose, but there wasn't a great deal else going on. Haven't you ever wanted to just... experience an adventure?"

"Like, go on a quest?????? Or explore a place most people won't go??????????? Like, sure, a bunch of friends and I did that over break!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!"

But they had come back to school.

He had no idea if he ever wanted to go back to the Satomi, mind you. But it was still, technically, a breka.

But it was a weird break, to come to school on an adventure, though given this school...

Well, maybe he was onto something.

"Put that way, an adventure break sounds pretty amazing!!!!!!!! And, like, ohmygosh we had so much fun!!!!!!! There was this totally evil castle headed by this vampire lord and we explored it while fighting off unicorn zombies and skeleton sorcerors and, like, look--" Nina dug out her phone to flip through her pictures before offering it to Owen, "--I've got a selfie with a zombie!!!!!!!!!!!! I, like, named him Egbert, but Lana said that he probably already had a name but, like, since he was dead we couldn't really ask him???????????"

But Egbert had been pretty cool.

"You've taken a picture with a dead person," Owen repeated, like that was a perfectly normal bit of conversation, and took the phone. "... What is this thing, by the way? You're not the first person I've seen using it."

"I mean, like, he didn't mind?????????????" Egbert had been confused, but he hadn't minded, and confusion was perfectly reasonable when nothing like her phone existed in her world. "Oh!!!! It's a cell phone!!!!!!!!!!! People, like, use them to call each other and you can like, take pictures and send messages to people too!!!!!!!!!!!!"

"Ohhhh, right, my roommate was telling me about these," Owen said, sounding more than a little excited at the thought of having one. "How does it work?"

"They're pretty simple," she said, leaning over to get a better look at her phone to show him. "Like, see, it's a touchscreen??????????? And you can slide out of photos and into the other options. A lot of people have, like, games on theirs too?????????"

Nina did not. Nina's phone was a tool, not a game system.

"So, like, that icon there is the one that let's you send messages to people right?????? They're all named pretty obvious things, like, you can look through my photos under the photo icon right there!!!!!!!!!"

She grinned back at him.

"Any time," she said happily. "And, like, if you want to get one for yourself, Turtle & Canary sells them here!!!!!!!!!! And Summer, the owner, is so cool, she'll totally be willing to cut you a deal or figure out something if you, like, don't have a lot of money!!!!!!!!!!"

"Free food is always available here," she assured him. "And, like, you'll have a place to sleep and get clean in the dorms, so that's also covered under free. If you want a job, though, a ton of places will be hiring, so you shouldn't have problems finding a place to work??????????"
