"Today we're actually going to learn a dance," Verity announced. "You've learned the basics of rhythm, you've learned to move parts of your body in isolation, now time to learn actual steps. And today, we're learning one of the easiest dances to begin with, the Foxtrot."

Made up of four steps in its most basic form, Verity was confident that she could have everyone dancing to it by the end of the day. "For this class, you'll be splitting up into partners, taking turns leading and following. Usually that's broken down by gender lines, but there's no reason not to learn both parts. They're the same step, just performed backwards."

And often in heels, but Verity wasn't going to make them all try dancing in heels yet. First she'd need to see them successfully walk in heels.

"The Foxtrot has a rhythm of slow-slow-quick-quick," she explained. "Which means that the first two steps each take about a beat, and the last two make up a half beat each. If you're leading, you start with your left foot and take a step forward, and then do the same with your right foot. Then you step to the left and bring your feet together. Followers, you do this in reverse. Start right, take a step back, then another step back with your left, a step to the right, and end with feet together." She demonstrated this for them several times, both backwards and forwards. "Okay, so we're going to practice the steps for a few minutes, both leading and following, and then you're going to pair up and practice dancing together. One person lead, the other follow, and then when you feel pretty confident, swap."

“Think I could leverage that for more... dance lessons?” Liam asked, leaning in to kiss her. Funny, he’d complain about not liking the taste of coffee, but it was a different story altogether when he could taste it on her.

"I think you could make a good case for it," Verity said, before stealing another kiss. "I know those hips of yours have rhythm."

She was, of course, referring to the dances he already knew.

"I had an excellent teacher," he acknowledged.

"How do you feel about teaching a class with me one time ~~if I ever start writing it early enough to ask~~?" Verity asked, veering the conversation back to serious for a moment.

"I'd love to," Liam said earnestly.

"Excellent, because in a few weeks I'll be out of dances I can demonstrate by myself," Verity said, grinning at him. "And while I could call James and ask him to help me teach, you won't make me split my paycheck."

"No, I won't," Liam agreed. "Though, hmmm- I might demand you bring me a London Fog at the station in return." Such an unreasonable demand!

"You know, there was a time when I didn't know that a London fog was anything other than a weather phenomenon and a pricy winter coat." She gave a long-suffering sigh. "Oh, those were the days."

"Hmm," Liam hummed. "What's that saying about protesting too much? Because I think that's what's happening right now."

"Don't try to kid yourself into thinking I'm at all interested in your hot leaf water," Verity teased. "Still not happening."

"That's fine," Liam said airily. "More for me, and I'll leave you to your pressed bean juice."

"Breakfast of champions," Verity said, loyally.

Just no, Verity. No.

"No." Liam said, shaking his head.

How were you an athlete with an attitude towards food like this, Verity? HOW?

Had you seen the dresses she had to put on? They were unforgiving and that was without trying to fit an arsenal in them. And what that had left for healthy eating habits, being on TV had destroyed.

"Two coffees?" she suggested.

"That's just twice as bad," Liam shook his head.

"Would you let me get away with it if I were saying 'two teas'?" she asked, suspicious.

"Of course not," Liam replied. "There should at least be a muffin or something to go with that." So help him, Verity, next week he was going to show up with a full-on breakfast.

Hey now, it wasn't like she refused to eat, she just generally couldn't go to the bother of cooking for herself!

"So...two coffees and a blueberry muffin?"

Well, neither did Liam, to be entirely honest, but he took advantage of the fact that you could pay other people to prepare food for you.

He sighed. "Is something approaching breakfast, yes."

But that brought up the other issue of money.

"I'd put butter on the muffin, so that's, like, four food groups right there."

Good thing she lived on an island where working one day a week was apparently enough to be able to make rent?

"If we're getting fancy, you could even put jam," Liam pointed out.

Unfortunately, she needed so much more than rent.

God, dance was expensive. And so was cryptozoology.

"On muffins? It's like I don't even know you sometimes."

"There are muffins that have berries in them, so why would jam be weird?" Liam wondered.

"You'd throw off the very precise fruit-to-muffin ratio," Verity declared.

Liam squinted suspiciously at Verity. "When you use words like 'precise' and 'ratio' in a sentence together it makes me think that maybe you've been spending a little too much time in the company of a certain cousin of yours."
