Intro to Dance, Wednesday Period 1

"Today we're actually going to learn a dance," Verity announced. "You've learned the basics of rhythm, you've learned to move parts of your body in isolation, now time to learn actual steps. And today, we're learning one of the easiest dances to begin with, the Foxtrot."

Made up of four steps in its most basic form, Verity was confident that she could have everyone dancing to it by the end of the day. "For this class, you'll be splitting up into partners, taking turns leading and following. Usually that's broken down by gender lines, but there's no reason not to learn both parts. They're the same step, just performed backwards."

And often in heels, but Verity wasn't going to make them all try dancing in heels yet. First she'd need to see them successfully walk in heels.

"The Foxtrot has a rhythm of slow-slow-quick-quick," she explained. "Which means that the first two steps each take about a beat, and the last two make up a half beat each. If you're leading, you start with your left foot and take a step forward, and then do the same with your right foot. Then you step to the left and bring your feet together. Followers, you do this in reverse. Start right, take a step back, then another step back with your left, a step to the right, and end with feet together." She demonstrated this for them several times, both backwards and forwards. "Okay, so we're going to practice the steps for a few minutes, both leading and following, and then you're going to pair up and practice dancing together. One person lead, the other follow, and then when you feel pretty confident, swap."

This time some old, jazzy music while stretching and watching Verity demonstrate the steps.

Once everyone was able to step correctly, Verity had the class pair up and practice together. With a little more modern music, of course.

Pfft, like music had to be old and stuffy to be danced to.

She had to admit, even just teaching high schoolers made her smile like little else.

Was that Liam, showing up near the end of class with a double espresso in hand?

Why yes, it absolutely was. And the coffee certainly wasn’t for him.

"You are a lifesaver," Verity declared with a smile. "Also, I love you."

...That may or may not have been to the coffee.

“The coffee loves you too,” Liam said solemnly as he handed over the life-giving beverage.

"I could have been talking to you!" Verity protested.

Liam didn't actually say anything, just gave her a knowing look. He knew you after all, Verity.

"...Fair point," Verity conceded, cuddling the coffee close. "But I do love you, too."

"Good to know," Liam said, grinning back at her. "That's a condition of getting coffee delivery, after all."

"Okay, but do I get coffee delivered because I love you, or do I love you because I get coffee delivered?" she asked philosophically.

"Must be the latter," Liam said reasonably. "Or else you and I remember your birthday very differently."

Verity tugged on the slim chain she wore around her neck, pulling out the rune Liam had given her. The chain was just long enough that the rune got tucked into her bra and rested by her heart. "You know, I don't think we do."

Liam's teasing grin shifted to something softer as he looked at her with undisguised fondness.

"Yeah?" he said. "Glad to hear it."

"So long as you don't need to ask me which I love more..."

"Coffee's not so great at snuggling," Liam pointed out. Or any number of other things, but they were in a ~~public comm~~ classroom, so Liam was not going to elaborate any further.

"And you're not so great at keeping me from murdering teenagers," Verity pointed out. "Well...okay. You probably would. But the coffee keeps me from wanting to."

"They're that bad, huh?" Liam asked. They didn't seem all that terri- never mind.

"What? No," Verity said. "But everything is terrible at 8 am."

The only instance when it was acceptable time to be awake was when Liam was getting up to get ready for work and she woke up enough to send him off with a smile on his face. And she could go back to sleep right after, hazy and blissed out.

"So... I shouldn't disturb you in the mornings before I go in to work anymore, is what you're saying?" Liam teased.
