Fandom High Welcome Picnic, Front Lawn of the School, All Day: Part II

The lawn was arranged with tables and chairs - some near the food, some not - and there was plenty of food to go around. The school had even wised up and put to-go boxes by the plates, so people didn't have to put food in their pockets to take it with them for later. No one was gonna judge you for making some pocket bacon, but at least now it wasn't a necessity.

[OCD is up! This is the picnic post for general mingling. Roommates, fake siblings and teachers are all here. Since it's outside, the picnic is open to all students, teachers, and townies!]

"Nah," Sparkle replied. "There's no math because the teachers are all too fucking lazy to want to teach it."

He'd had to get his by correspondence.

Correspondence was hell.

"Well, no," Sparkle replied, and then shrugged. "That's kind of why people warn you about them."

"Sure," Vette replied. "Raiding the evil doom castle was pretty fun."

She hadn't found anything of any worth, but the getting there had been enjoyable?

"See," Vette said immediately, latching on to that out. "I mean, if what we just had wasn't winter, how bad does it really get? And the power went out and people were just having 'eating all the food before it goes bad' parties in the common rooms, so it can't hurt to have a ready supply, right?"

Food insecurity was kind of rampant among her people. Even without taking the rest of her history into account, Ryloth wasn't exactly renowned for its vast tracts of arable land or anything.

"It's rather different from my own</i world, as well," Sidon offered, as sort of a gesture of relatablity. "It can be a little <i>strange</i> getting accustomed to it at first, but it's amazing how much some of it starts to feel a bit more normal. Though, I will admit, some have an easier time with it than others."

"I am beginning to see why this was the cheapest boarding school my parents could find."

"My roommate is a cat person." So. That's his life.

And as someone who had grown up being able to take literally two steps and find food, even in the scarcity after Calamity Ganon's arrival, it was still something Sidon had to remember...even if he'd only really known about it since the weekend they were but mere hatchlings.

"Precisely," he said with firm enthusiasm, smiling at her. "What an incredible display of foresight, Vette. Last year, I don't recall it ever getting quite as bad as the last weekend, but one can never tell. I know I'll be grateful to know that, in a pinch, I'll not need to venture too far to find something to eat....assuming, of course," his smile broadened a little, "you wouldn't terribly mind me dipping into your stores perhaps a little."

...most of the things she was going to be taking were borderline inedible for him. It would not even remotely be an issue.

"Your roommate is Mae?" Sidon guessed, far too pleased to be able to already make an association with another new student. "Or is there another cat person I've yet to encounter so far?"

If there was another, Sidon was determined to find them and meet the heck out of them!

"I needed a change," she said, which was sort of an explanation. "Welcome back."

"...I think it's just Mae." DID HE TOO NEED TO FIND THIS OTHER CAT PERSON?

"Basically," Sparkle agreed easily. "But hey, no math."

So win, right?

"I'm cool with no math. No homework would also be nice."

Vette looked thoughtful for a moment, and then looked toward the tables, tilting her head.

"You know, it's weird they don't have any dried fish or anything," she mused. "I bet I could find something, though..."

Cans! They canned everything, right? Sure, it was cooked right to hell and back, but at least it was fish! Not... not that it was an actual concern. Because she was sure he was either humoring her or trying to let her save face, one of those two things.

Maybe now was a good time for a strategic topic change.

"So, back to Fandom Island, huh? Missing home yet?"

Sparkle paused for a moment, considering that.

"Does taking care of a screaming baby robot for a week count?"

Because that was pretty much the only example of homework he could think of from his own student days, and he didn't even know if Skywalker was teaching a 'surprise robobaby' class this semester.

"Wow. Cheap school's got money. Back home they don't even bother doing an egg anymore."

People tended to eat the eggs.

Sidon wanted to assure her that it was fine, really, she needn't go through the trouble, but a topic change seemed far better and more efficient, and who was he to he to keep her from having her own methods of feeling helpful when he was so dedicated to his own?

So he smiled faintly at her and nodded. "Always," he said, " but it was incredibly nice to visit again, especially after last week. Everyone seemed to have had a good time, as well, which is more important than anything else. I do wish I had more time to spend with everyone; I didn't even have the chance to introduce you properly to my father, Vette, for which I sincerely apologize, but there is, thankfully," hopefully, "always next time."

"How wonderful, then!" said Sidon. "Mae is an absolute delight. I had the opportunity to meet her when I was seeking out my little sibling for the semester, Kat Stratford. You can...probably see why I might have been a little confused."

He chuckled a little at his own silly gaffe for a moment.

"I trust you were given a sibling as well? Might I ask who it was?"

"I don't know if it's that the school has money, or if the Ethics teacher is just really devoted to making his students suffer."

Probably both. Sparkle suspected both.

". . . I feel like that is maybe the opposite of Ethics?"

"I would have liked the chance to meet him, I think," Vette admitted.

While at the same time being utterly terrified of the prospect.

"I meant to," she added, "but I met the welcoming committee on the way in, and they had so much to say," space, had they ever, "that, wouldn't you know it, I was just completely tired out," hiding, "when they were done."

"I mean, there's definitely an ethical code of some sort involved," Sparkle replied.

It was, in Sparkle's estimation, perhaps a shitty one.

... He was still holding a grudge over that exercise with the line and the stepping forward or backwards to check one's privelege. Being at the back of the damn room had a funny way of doing that.

Sparkle shrugged and just kind of scratched at the inside of his elbow, smiling crookedly.

"I have no complaints," he decided. "Did some get-together-with-friend stuff."

And then spent Boxing Day getting laid.

So. Really no complaints.

"You?"

Mae had two parents and a house to go back to if she had to. Otherwise, she'd probably not make it very far in that exercise, either.

"Isn't ethics supposed to be, like. Doing good things? Not deliberately making people suffer."

If it helped, it was also a prospect that terrified Sidon to a small degree, as well, because if he worried that Vette sometimes found him overwhelming...

...well, it was clearly something he shouldn't concern himself with until the next trip, anyway.

"Welcoming committee?" he asked, blinking a moment with a tilt of his head before a light of realization illuminated his expression and he laughed a little. "Oh, do you mean Tona and Tula? You know, it's the strangest thing, they were rather like that last time, too. So eager to meet everyone and absolutely talk their fins off, as far as I can tell, yet I swear, I've hardly ever be able to get more than a mere sentence out of them more often than not! I suppose they're just particularly excited about the idea of meeting so many new and interesting people!"
