Fandom High Welcome Picnic, Front Lawn of the School, All Day: Part I

Despite the not-so-great weather earlier in the week, the weather today looked nice and... well, decent for the end of December, and while the rest of town might still have signs of last week's snow, there were no traces left outside the school. (It just meant one less uncomfortable question for the big siblings to deal with, you're welcome.)

The buffet table was ready, set as far as possible from the glittered-out blue and gold tables and chairs. The winter bonfire was crackling for warmth and food-toasting opportunities. The lists of siblings and roommates had been double-checked. It looked like everything was ready for a picnic!

[OCD is up! This is part one of the picnic, specifically for meeting siblings, roommates, and teachers. The rest of the picnic is happening here. Since it's outside, the picnic is open to all students, teachers, and townies!]

Miguel took a moment to remember that, then laughed. "My brother," he corrected. "You have anything to do with that?" he asked, still grinning.

"Nope," she lied with the cheerful aplomb of someone who thought truth was for other people, "Just a witness. An innocent bystander to pumpkin spluttery."

The name was familiar. "Oh hey, you're Kaidan's 'M'! Speaking of brothers, that as..jerk's..mine."

Her leather jacket rose in a shrug, "I asked the as..Kaidan.. if he had any friends here. Kinda surprised me when he said yes. Didn't surprise me that he listed them in alphabetical order at the drop of a pin. You're 'M'."

"I've been called worse," Miguel decided. "So what brought you here - you looking after the 'as-Kaidan'?"

"Someone has to," she answered breezily as if she was kidding. She wasn't. That was pretty much it. "Took a sabbatical for a semester from my teaching gig back home, came here to teach Civics. You?"

"Ran away from home to join a group trying to fix realities, then decided to take a break from getting the mental and physical crap kicked out of me every day, came somewhere it only happens monthly," Miguel said. "Teaching science."

She snorted, "If they're hiring out, hook me up. I got a big one needs some fixing and I retired from that sh..stuff.. when I started teaching. Monthly, huh? Some sort of weird island PMS?"

Jack could relate. Cramps sucked.

"Huh. Never thought of that." Miguel considered it a moment. "Nah, I was mostly just averaging it out, though. A few a month, then nothing for a while. Enough to keep it interesting, not so much we can't catch our breath."

He shrugged again. "Sometimes 'fixing' is a pretty broad definition. Stopping them from breaking the multiverse, not stopping problems just because. Mostly. But hey, let me know what yours is like, I'll pass it on, have my team keep an eye out."

"If you can go back in time, we've got some giant alien space bugs that could benefit from extinction," Jack said dryly, "They're extinct now but it'd have been nice if it'd happened before they ate half my galaxy."

Reapers were assholes. She was glad they were all dead.

"Good to know it doesn't happen once a month. It'd only be a matter of time before the island's cycle and mine synched up and then you'd all be fu..scr..in trouble."

Miguel made a so-so gesture with his hand. "Time has its own rules. Haven't figured them out myself."

He grinned at her self-censorship. "Worried about the tender ears around here?"

"Not really," Jack answered, "It's more an exercise. My other boss is under the impression I can change."

The jacket hiked over her shoulders in a shrug. "Gets me to pay attention to what I'm saying. Means I'm less likely to let something fall out of my mouth that'll make someone cry."

Miguel lived to make people miserable with words, but usually only people in authority. It was a thing.

"So you just throw things at them instead?"

"Usually I just throw the people."

"Yeah but they don't scream the whole time and there's no fun splorch noise when they land," she complained.

"'Splorch'?" Miguel wrinkled his nose. Thanks for that, Jack. Usually he threw them far enough away not to hear anything when they landed. Plus, "Usually mine crunch. Yours don't wear armor?"

Jack smirked at the wrinkled nose. Oh, Miguel.

"Sometimes," she admitted, "Depends who it is. A lot of what I'd been throwing around most recently wasn't human. Some of it was. Some of it was even alive humans. Those ones tended to wear armor."

"I've...never found a reason to throw a dead human," Miguel admitted. "I maintain there are more aerodynamic options."

"So not dead-dead, just not-really-alive dead? Okay, yeah, I'd throw them, too. If they were trying to kill me. Otherwise heck, the band at one of the bars is zombies. I'd only throw them if they tried to play something really objectionable."
