Fandom High Welcome Picnic, Front Lawn of the School, All Day: Part I

Despite the not-so-great weather earlier in the week, the weather today looked nice and... well, decent for the end of December, and while the rest of town might still have signs of last week's snow, there were no traces left outside the school. (It just meant one less uncomfortable question for the big siblings to deal with, you're welcome.)

The buffet table was ready, set as far as possible from the glittered-out blue and gold tables and chairs. The winter bonfire was crackling for warmth and food-toasting opportunities. The lists of siblings and roommates had been double-checked. It looked like everything was ready for a picnic!

[OCD is up! This is part one of the picnic, specifically for meeting siblings, roommates, and teachers. The rest of the picnic is happening here. Since it's outside, the picnic is open to all students, teachers, and townies!]

"Um, the mail coaches." He frowned, tried to move his left arm, and winced. "Messenger birds. A drone, if you are sworn to Emerald City's service. I don't know how witches communicate, they just seem to know things." Who would he get a message to?

Langwidere-- no. Tip-- he didn't even know where she was, now. Jane. Yes, he could let Jane know he hadn't meant to disappear. Find out if she'd found her daughter.

"I don't think birds are going to help you much here," Vette noted, apologetically. "You could try the post office, though. They'll deliver letters anywhere in the multiverse they can reach." She gave an exasperated huff. "Which doesn't include my home, but hey, maybe you'll have better luck than I did."

Stupid island.

"Multiverse?" Jack paused, then shook his head. "Where are you from?"

And then his stomach growled, and he darted a look over at the buffet. "Can I-- I had breakfast, but it's been a while, if it's allowed to get something to eat here...?" Tony and Eliot had said as much, and his name was on all these lists, but he didn't want to be presumptuous.

"Yeah, eat, definitely," Vette replied, blinking. "We can talk and walk, or I can just grab you something. Fair warning, I'm not from this world, I still don't know what half that food is."

But this guy kind of looked like he'd been run over by a rancor, so Vette felt as though she really needed to ask anyway.

"I'm fine," Jack said very quickly, trying to straighten, then wincing. "Sort of," he amended that. "Let's just-- walk slowly." He got up, and very carefully started walking toward the food. "I was in a battle," he felt compelled to explain. "Usually I'm not like this."

Usually he was even more pigheaded.

Vette glanced at him a little sideways, and then just nodded her head, walking along slowly with him.

"If you need to... I don't know, lean or something, I'm more sturdy than I look," she noted. "I know some field first-aid, but it looks like... maybe someone already took care of anything that can be fixed without kolto?"

"What's kolto?" So much was new, Jack was now wondering if the food was going to be silver, or glittery or something. There were a few people around here that looked like they ate glitter. Then he muttered low, "Thanks." He leaned on her only once, when the ground was uneven, and he couldn't make his right knee bend all the way. "Mr. Stark. And Eliot. Eliot found me, and Mr. Stark ... put my limbs back on." He set his teeth against what her reaction might be to that.

For what it was worth, Vette didn't even seem to blink, just glancing at him thoughtfully.

"I don't know either of them," she noted, "but good, you need those."

Cyborgs were pretty common in her neck of the woods.

"Kolto's a healing agent," she added. "But it's impossible to get around here, it's something I'd have to go home for. Which isn't happening," booo, "but that just means you get to heal at the normal healing speed instead."

"Ah well," Jack said as lightly as he could. "Not like I'm not used to that." He frowned. "Why can't you go home? Or contact them?"

They'd reached the buffet table now, and it was a bit overwhelming. Some of it at least looked familiar: meats and cheeses, and some breads. Apples. The rest of it, though?

"What's good?" Might as well ask the Big Sibling the important things.

Vette just shrugged her shoulder and sighed a, "Wish I knew," content to leave it at that for a moment while she switched gears to look at the spread on the table.

"My tastes are suspect," she added, because this poor little human cyborg boy probably didn't want to sink his teeth into some spiced mynock, she was sure, "I'll eat basically anything. What kind of things do you like? Sweet? Savory? Salty? Spicy?"

Jack gave a small laugh at that, because of course, someone blue and tentacled would like different things. "Salty? And maybe, something sweet?" He added, "I've eaten anything when I've had to. Food was scarce sometimes, where I grew up."

"I... get that," Vette said, smiling a little bit sideways. She absolutely had plans to make good use of several of those to-go containers before she left the picnic today, yes. "Here, if you want sweet, there are fruit trays," she gestured to them, "or cookies, brownies... the baked stuff is all pretty okay. And for salty, maybe try the potato chips? They won't fill you up, but at least they taste good. We can grab you a sandwich or some pizza or something if what you're really going for is to fill your belly, too."

"Potato... chips?" That was zero amounts of familiarity there. Cookies, yes, Jack took several. He shrugged and took a handful of chips too, as well as fixings for a sandwich. "Is it always like this? Free food everywhere?" He took a bite of a potato chip, then "MMmmm!"'d and took another handful.

"Only when they figure there's something worth celebrating," Vette noted, "but this whole past month has been full of that, so maybe it's a constant anyway? And there's always food in the common rooms in the dorms, and the school has a cafeteria that isn't too bad."

By human standards, anyway. Vette really would eat basically anything.
