Fandom High Welcome Picnic, Front Lawn of the School, All Day: Part I

Despite the not-so-great weather earlier in the week, the weather today looked nice and... well, decent for the end of December, and while the rest of town might still have signs of last week's snow, there were no traces left outside the school. (It just meant one less uncomfortable question for the big siblings to deal with, you're welcome.)

The buffet table was ready, set as far as possible from the glittered-out blue and gold tables and chairs. The winter bonfire was crackling for warmth and food-toasting opportunities. The lists of siblings and roommates had been double-checked. It looked like everything was ready for a picnic!

[OCD is up! This is part one of the picnic, specifically for meeting siblings, roommates, and teachers. The rest of the picnic is happening here. Since it's outside, the picnic is open to all students, teachers, and townies!]

"Okay," Kagura said, thinking if she had any immediate questions.

"...is the bus driver a sad old man with no girlfriend?"

Sure, that's an important question.

"Um," Norman replied, and blinked. "Which one was driving the bus-- nevermind, I found him."

The guy with the balloons and the tiny toy bus, looking vaguely irritated? That had to be him.

"I mean, I don't think he has a girlfriend," he offered.

Poor Kanan.

"Didn't think so," Kagura said.

She paused again.

"So you're going to be my friend, too?" she asked, trying to seem like she didn't care about the answer.

There was something... kind of heartbreaking about that question. Norman blinked, and then tried a little smile on for size.

"I mean, sure," he offered. "If you want me to."

"I mean, it's good to have them when you're in a strange place," Kagura said. "So hopefully you're more useful than the person I mistook you for."

She was playing the tsundere card hard, here.

"I'll try my best," Norman replied, nodding and smiling. "If there's anything else you need..." He shrugged. "I can give you directions around town, point you to where to get clothes or food or places where you can get a job if you want one. Give you tips about the island's weirdness. There's usually a whole spiel that people give new kids, but mostly it just makes them sound like they've gone a little crazy."

"...I will probably need to get a job," Kagura admitted, "I don't exactly get an allowance."

"For what it's worth, getting a job in town is really weirdly easy once you find somewhere that you want to work," Norman offered. "I don't think I've ever actually heard of someone doing a proper job interview around here."

He sure hadn't.

"Does anyone actually want to work?" Kagura asked. "I mean, jobs can be fulfilling, but they're hardly what you want to do."

"I guess it depends on the job," Norman said after a few moments of thought. "Is there anything in particular you figure you'd be good at?"

"I've really only ever had two jobs," Kagura said, thinking it over. "And I don't want to be muscle for a gang anymore. So, odd jobs it is. Which is kind of like a lot of different jobs, to keep things from getting boring."

That... was an excellent question. Norman blinked and thought that over for a few seconds.

"Maybe... try the gym? Or the scrapyard? I know people park spaceships at the scrapyard, so it's probably not just about scrap."

Kagura nodded and chewed thoughtfully. "That's a good place to start, then. Thank you."

"Anytime," Norman replied, smiling faintly. "And if you need anything else, I'm in room 315. Or at the Magic Box on Tuesdays."
