Fandom High Welcome Picnic, Front Lawn of the School, All Day: Part I

Despite the not-so-great weather earlier in the week, the weather today looked nice and... well, decent for the end of December, and while the rest of town might still have signs of last week's snow, there were no traces left outside the school. (It just meant one less uncomfortable question for the big siblings to deal with, you're welcome.)

The buffet table was ready, set as far as possible from the glittered-out blue and gold tables and chairs. The winter bonfire was crackling for warmth and food-toasting opportunities. The lists of siblings and roommates had been double-checked. It looked like everything was ready for a picnic!

[OCD is up! This is part one of the picnic, specifically for meeting siblings, roommates, and teachers. The rest of the picnic is happening here. Since it's outside, the picnic is open to all students, teachers, and townies!]

This poor thing got stuck with Kat. Someone really should be sued.

"I think that's me, supposedly," she said, like she wasn't sure about this whole thing.

Because she wasn't. Any of it.

Well, neither was Keyleth, so that was something?

“So you’re Kat, then?” she asked after consulting the piece of paper in her hand. “Good, that’s kind of a relief then, because I wasn’t sure if I was going to end up standing on a chair and yelling your name to find you or something. That probably would have been bad.”

She managed a wide-eyed, awkward smile that looked genuine even if it was obvious she was trying just a bit too hard to act like she wasn’t freaking out about this entire situation.

“Oh, and just so you know, I’m not from this world at all, so I’m sorry in advance if I get a lot of things wrong.”

Oh, good. Either it was another prankster, or someone who was just really out of it.

"Uh huh. And what world's that," she said, flatly.

"Well . . ." Keyleth was starting to get the sense that she was not making a great first impression, was she? "Exandria, but I mean, you probably haven't heard of it. Unless you have, which would be kind of amazing, actually."

Arguably, she was really out of it.

Sorry, Keyleth. At least she didn't ditch out like she did with the big sib she thought was a mascot.

"...No."

Not that Keyleth would’ve blamed her if she had!

“Yeah, that’s what I thought. I’m probably the only one here who’s from there. But I promise, I do understand the importance of good hygiene, and I can be really quiet, and oh, by the way, you don’t have any animal allergies, do you?”

"No. Why?" she asked, quickly and warily.

“Oh, good,” Keyleth said, so earnestly it was ridiculous. “It’s just — I can turn into animals sometimes, that’s kind of my thing, so I was worried that shedding might be a problem. Not that I’m going to go around doing that all the time!”

Sorry to say, Kat, no, you were not being pranked.

"Okay," Kat said, folding her arms. "Let's see."

“Wait, really?” Keyleth asked after several moments. “Okay!”

And promptly turned into a small kitten because a surprise tiger was probably not going to be reassuring.

A surprise kitten still got a startled yelp out of Kat, complete with a "WHAT THE HELL."

You brought this on yourself, Kat.

So, definitely a good thing she hadn’t gone Minxie then?

Keyleth reverted back to her normal half-elven form and made a little ‘ta-da’ gesture that came off kind of like a poor attempt at jazz hands. “See! Told you.”

"What was that!"

It was the thing she told you she could do and you literally told her to prove, Kat.

"The --" Keyleth suddenly looked sheepish and kind of unsure of herself. "Oh, was that a joke? Is 'let's see' some kind of slang around here?"

"No! Just... you weren't supposed to be able to actually do that!"

She hadn't even drank any of the water yet to be able to blame it on something in the water supply.

"You'd think, but no, apparently I've always been good at it," Keyleth said, sighing. "If it makes you feel any better, there aren't that many people back home who know how to do it either."

"They're not here, so it doesn't make me feel anything," Kat admitted.

What did she even do with this. Besides never tell her dad.

"Nothing?" Try not to look that disappointed, Keyleth. "I tried, at least. Sorry?"
