Fandom High Welcome Picnic, Front Lawn of the School, All Day: Part I

Despite the not-so-great weather earlier in the week, the weather today looked nice and... well, decent for the end of December, and while the rest of town might still have signs of last week's snow, there were no traces left outside the school. (It just meant one less uncomfortable question for the big siblings to deal with, you're welcome.)

The buffet table was ready, set as far as possible from the glittered-out blue and gold tables and chairs. The winter bonfire was crackling for warmth and food-toasting opportunities. The lists of siblings and roommates had been double-checked. It looked like everything was ready for a picnic!

[OCD is up! This is part one of the picnic, specifically for meeting siblings, roommates, and teachers. The rest of the picnic is happening here. Since it's outside, the picnic is open to all students, teachers, and townies!]

Rosa was seeking solace from a woman with a baby. That's how bad her mood was.

Well, okay, that woman was Kitty, so it wasn't that bad, but still.

"There is a kid in there somewhere, right?" she asked, once she drifted over and looked at the stroller.

"There better be, or you're going to witness a freakout," Kitty said, reaching into the stroller to reveal Lexi's face.

Lexi answered that by smiling, because hi Mom!

So help her, this island was making her soft, because Rosa actually saw that and thought it was kind of adorable.

For, you know, a dumb stupid baby thing.

"There she is," she said, and, shut up, no, she wasn't slightly grinning or anything, it was a trick of the light, obviously. "That's good. I really didn't want to have to go all search-and-rescue today."

But she would have. In a heartbeat.

"Everything going good, though?" Rosa asked, turning her attention to something just as cute but significantly less baby-y.

"Yep. Back at work, had a quiet Christmas, now on to planning a New Year's thing," Kitty said, covering Lexi up again just so she could take it off again. "How're you?"

"Terrible," said Rosa, who didn't really believe in beating around the bush with friends. "Something got screwed up with my class, family sucks, and I have tamales coming out of my ears."

She considered this predicament for a moment before asking, "You want any tamales? I have thousands of them."

That she'd somehow managed to get back to her apartment on her bike, too. It was vaguely impressive.

"We could maybe take some, please not a thousand," Kitty said, a little warily. "Not a great holiday?"

So a hundred. Got it.

Rosa shrugged a little. "Meh. It was okay. Not great. I'm not big on Christmas. My family is. That's...why I'm not big on Christmas. How was yours?"

"Pretty chill. I'm Jewish and Clint's not big on Christmas, but we wrapped a bunch of baby supplies as presents and opened them for Lexi because we're dorks who like taking too many pictures."

At least she could admit it.
