Fandom High Welcome Picnic, Front Lawn of the School, All Day: Part I

Despite the not-so-great weather earlier in the week, the weather today looked nice and... well, decent for the end of December, and while the rest of town might still have signs of last week's snow, there were no traces left outside the school. (It just meant one less uncomfortable question for the big siblings to deal with, you're welcome.)

The buffet table was ready, set as far as possible from the glittered-out blue and gold tables and chairs. The winter bonfire was crackling for warmth and food-toasting opportunities. The lists of siblings and roommates had been double-checked. It looked like everything was ready for a picnic!

[OCD is up! This is part one of the picnic, specifically for meeting siblings, roommates, and teachers. The rest of the picnic is happening here. Since it's outside, the picnic is open to all students, teachers, and townies!]

Hannibal did not have his normal gift of food for his "buddy" today, but he was still dressed very nicely and had very good coffee with him. And had possibly cheated and asked the moose what the new teacher he was supposed to meet looked like.

So, have a not-English sort-of-Count doing his best to be pleasant?

"Ms Reynolds?" He smiled, holding out his hand. "Doctor Hannibal Lecter."

"...Doctor, you say?"

Well, then. Sweet Dee looked faintly impressed. Things were starting to look up for her after all as she gave a (slightly wine-stained) smile in return and took the offered hand in greeting. Which she would be shaking for the duration of what she said next, which would definitely be pushing it into weird and/or awkward territory despite her best efforts not to. "What a pleasure to meet you. Are you...also one of the teachers here at this..." Oooh, saying this one was going to hurt a little, but she grimaced through it, "fine, prestigious school?"

...and she might still be shaking his hand a moment longer after that, too. She did have incredibly large and surprisingly powerful hands, after all.

"Yes," Hannibal answered both of her questions. He let her shake his hand a moment longer, then determinedly retrieved it. "Welcome to Fandom. Where are you joining us from?"

"Philadelphia, actually!" said Sweet Dee, trying to make it sound way more impressive than it could ever possibly be, her smile already straining at the seams. "Yeah, I just...you know...figured it was just...time to get out the city for a while, try something...new," that was a word for it!, "and...exciting." Yeah, that one, too, probably. "And so I'm here!" She shrugged it off, waved her hand a little, just oh-so-nonchalant and casual, really. "Teaching acting!" With a little of course, what else? sort of laugh at the end.

Hannibal exercised his much better acting skills to seem polite and interested. "I imagine the students will enjoy that. Are you aware of this island's idiosyncracies?"

And Sweet Dee blinked a few times, tilting her head.

"Idio-what nows?"

Well, now, that seemed like a phrase that no one ever used in reference to anything even remotely good. Sweet Dee look at Hannibal for a second, before passing her eyes pointedly around at the crowd assembled at the picnic.

"Oh, you mean like the blue people and the cosplayers and the giant guy who looks like a shark had a baby with a linebacker?"

She had been diligently trying to ignore the hell out of all of them, so thank you sooooo much, Dr. Lecter, for bringing them right to the forefront of the conversation. She reaaaaallly appreciated it!

She was welcome; it was, after all, his job here.

"Them, yes," Hannibal agreed. "Also the man on fire," he pointed out Jono, "and the fact that several of the people here are from other time periods, or that most of them have arrived here by magic. Is any of this usual for the world you're from?"

Well. The one on fire didn't actually seem to bother her nearly as much as it should.

But Sweet Dee was just going to look at Hannibal with than expression that almost looked betrayed. You'd given her hope, Doc, and then you just snatched it right away out of her giant hammer hands.

"No," she said, like it was the most obvious thing in the world because it was. "No, it is definitely not."

But she, for a moment, seemed to reconsider.

"And, I mean, you still see some preeeeetttty weird shit in South Philly, but...I mean, come on," she gestured toward Mae. "That kid is obviously a cat."

But that reconsidering expression flooded right back to her.

"Actually, no, my brother's dead ex-wife tried to turn herself in to a cat, so never mind, bad example, but you get what I mean, right?"

"I understand, yes," Hannibal said. "But if you can take it all in stride, you will do fine. Strange things happen here on a regular basis."
