Fandom High Welcome Picnic, Front Lawn of the School, All Day: Part I

Despite the not-so-great weather earlier in the week, the weather today looked nice and... well, decent for the end of December, and while the rest of town might still have signs of last week's snow, there were no traces left outside the school. (It just meant one less uncomfortable question for the big siblings to deal with, you're welcome.)

The buffet table was ready, set as far as possible from the glittered-out blue and gold tables and chairs. The winter bonfire was crackling for warmth and food-toasting opportunities. The lists of siblings and roommates had been double-checked. It looked like everything was ready for a picnic!

[OCD is up! This is part one of the picnic, specifically for meeting siblings, roommates, and teachers. The rest of the picnic is happening here. Since it's outside, the picnic is open to all students, teachers, and townies!]

Kanan pivoted his foot just slightly and bent one knee, bracing against that force that was pushing against him. And then, just like that, it was gone again, and Kanan was immediately lifting his hands to pull his hair back into the fastener again.

"Phew," Kanan said, glancing down at himself, pleased to note that he was significantly less sparkly, now. "Yeah, that's actually a huge improvement. Thanks."

She bobbed her head and rocked back and forth on her heels for a second. She wasn't used to thanks of any sort and it made her a little uncomfortable but the moment passed.

Snickered when she saw the more or less Kanan-shaped outline done on the ground in glitter and tossed her head at it. "You do like to leave an impression."

Lamest joke ever. Shut up.

"Proof of my sparkling personality," Kanan replied, giving the Kanan-silhouette an amused once-over.

He could do lame jokes too, see?

"Nope," Jack said immediately, "Can't have. I've already got one of those from this island. Sorry, buddy boy, you're going to have to choose another personality to have."

Kanan blinked, and then laughed a little, shaking his head.

"Okay, no sparkling," not even for the sake of a good pun. He'd have to cope. "I suppose I should be thankful I get a choice, hm? Let's go with 'cynical,' then. I do cynical well when I really set my mind to it."

Hey Sparkle even had the right name for it, and she was going to be so put out in a few minutes when she saw he wasn't the englittered one.

"Cynical is practical," Jack allowed, "It ain't great, but as long as it ain't your default, fine."

That's a mighty big glass house she just slung that rock at.

Kanan paused for a moment.

"If I'm being entirely honest, I have no idea how you'd categorize my default."

'Dad.' His default was very steadily edging into dad mode.

"Uptight," she responded with a smirk, "Way too uptight and in need of some serious fun. See? You are glad I'm here."

He was going right into that bucket with Liara, of people whose world she was gonna shake like a snow globe.

"Oh, come on, I can't be that bad."

... He'd crankily pulled a stack of sequin seat covers out of a bus before coming here. He was absolutely that bad.

"But... yeah. I'm glad you're here."

"You are that bad," Jack chirped at him with a grin, "You've been hanging out with Kaidan too much. He's a bad influence."

Well he was.

"Moderation is for monks."

To the Jedi, yes.

Kanan almost immediately let loose a small huff of his breath between his teeth that might or might not have been a laugh.

"Yeah, funny story..."

Even if he was kind of a shitty Jedi.

She made chinhands right at him. Again with the ridiculous doe-eyes. "Tell me the funny story, Kanan! Tell me the story!"

Remember when you said you were glad she was here?

At least that earned a bit of a soft chuckle and a shake of his head? It was hard not to be amused, okay?

"I might be leaning a little more into the 'monk' side of things these days," he offered. And then paused. Considered. Awkwardly reached up to scratch his chin, looking thoughtful. "Though I'm not exactly great at it."

He was still inclined to follow Hera around like a puppy, for example.

... And there was this worrisome addiction to cupcakes.

"Good," she expressed immediately, "Don't be. Churchy monk types who think they're better than everyone because they don't get laid are the worst."

Sorry not sorry, entire Jedi order.

"Nobody likes a sanctimonious prick, Kanan," she informed him, "And I've already got one of those back home anyway so that's out for you, too."

"Duly noted," Kanan replied dutifully. "Isn't exactly like there's anybody around who'll hold me to all of that, anyway."

Skywalker? Rand? One didn't have the time of day for him and the other was a great-kriffing-grandfather at this point. So.

"I figure so long as I keep my head on right, I'm probably not a complete disaster anyway."

"GOOD," she repeated adamantly, "The last thing you need is to turn out like that."

Opinions. She shared.

"Plus the other thing I already got is the uptight as..jerk.. who could use a good f..shagging. You're running out of options here."

Kanan was kinda already of the opinion that he could use a good f-shagging, but these were things he didn't share with the world at large, generally. He wasn't going to be that guy who got all hung up over a girl and then made his pining too obvious, after all.

Weird change of pace from the life he'd been living before he'd met Hera, though.

"And that's all the categories I could possibly fit in, huh? Nominally cynical, uptight or uptight asshole?"

"Nah, there's more. I've also got uberjock, testosterone-fueled rage machine - and you can't even compete with a Krogan quad so don't try, bitingly sarcastic sniper, too twee for words bouncemistress, calm collected and annoying, Mr. 'I think I'm funny but not' speed machine, and then there's Vega," Jack drawled, "Who you sound like so much it's creepy, but thank f..god you don't act like him. One's enough for all the galaxies. EDI's the only normal one of the lot and that's because she's a machine who can encode her personality matrix to whatever she wants."

Looked him up and down, "We need to find you something unique."

Cowboy warrior-monk!

"Unique, huh?" Kanan pursed his lips for a moment while he mulled that one over. "I guess 'gunslinging disaster Jedi' is a little too specific, huh?"

Definitely didn't have one of those!

"Nah, the family disaster's already me," she drawled, "'Jedi's too specific. 'Gunslinger' could also be Garrus. That man cradles his sniper rifle like it's a baby but he's also no slouch with anything else that goes bang."

She clapped him on the shoulder. "We'll figure it out. There's time. You're still a baby yet."

He was probably around her age.

"I suppose I can be patient, then," Kanan replied, smiling crookedly. "I mean, I've got plenty of time to find my stride."

He was sort of in a weird transitional period right now anyway.

"Patience is some sort of virtue. So I get told," Jack said. She hawked and spat to the side to show what she thought of that.

"Booooring."

"... Just so long as we don't settle on 'boring,'" Kanan decided. "Please, let's not settle on boring."

She snorted. "'Sif I'd let you wind up boring? No way. I'd beat you like cream before I'd let that happen."

Jack cared.

And now Kanan had to squint a little, uncertainly.

"Thank you?"
