BWI Airport Portalocity Lounge, Saturday morning

"Portalocity lounge," Mae read aloud, and heaved a sigh of relief. "Finally. First time I ever travel alone and I get lost in the stupid airport." She walked into the lounge, looked around, and hopped up onto the bench, her duffel bag tucked under her feet. There was plenty of room, since her legs were too short to reach the ground. "Of course, it's bigger than, like, all of Possum Springs put together, so I guess that can't be too surprising. Good thing Mom and Dad insisted I take the early bus."

She tapped her heels on her duffel bag and eyed the door. "And now I'm talking to myself. Good job, Mae. Perfect first impression." She made her eyes comically wide and waved to an imaginary audience. "HeY, I'M mAe, i'M TOtallY NOrmAl, niCE To MEeT yoU." She frowned and tapped her feet harder. "Good job, Killer."

Another glance around the lounge. There wasn't a lot to look at yet.

"I wish I had a video game."

[NEWBIE SHUTTLE TIME! Possibly slightly early, but I want a distraction]

Honestly, considering the group already gathered, a girl walking in on a platform made of hair seemed, well, not normal, but not terribly out of place, either. "Log. Hour five. Hour four? No, definitely hour five. This is not a First Ones facility, as it appears initially." She looked up at the banner, slightly disappointed it was in a language she could read. "The writing is all wrong and there isn't - hello. I'm counting several other lifeforms here with me. Hmm. An unexpected social experiment in the making?"

[Fleeing for dinner soon, but will absolutely hit everyone up for pings when I return.]

"Oh. My. God." Mae didn't even pretend not to stare. "Your hair is AWESOME!!!"

It was purple and you could ride it. Mae didn't even care that she had no idea how it could possibly work. It was hair that you could ride!

"And you are very cute!" Entrapta said, eyes going big and starry. She loved cute things, like teensy food and cat paintings. Come to think of it, Entrapta was pretty sure that the big-eyed kitty cat painting she had in her castle kinda looked like Mae, too.

Mae blushed. She never knew how to react when people complimented her like that.

"What are you recording?"

"My notes," Entrapta said, waving the recorder around with her hair. "So later on I can access them when I'm putting together experiments and forming hypotheses! I also write out my notes sometimes," she added, her hair digging into her pockets to find a pad and a pencil, "but writing is slower than talking."

"You're going to build an experiment around going to school?"

"There's always time for another experiment!" Entrapta said, gleefully. "But also, I had thought that this building might be First Ones tech and was taking notes about what that would mean, but then I realized it wasn't, so I had to update that information."

Which was a little sad. Entrapta would have loved to find more First Ones tech.

"Oh cool. . . . First ones of what?"

"The first settlers of Etheria!" Entrapta said. "The First Ones. Advanced technology left behind by a lost civilization. Makes our modern innovations look like children's toys. The foundations of my research!"

"Ohhhh, in Etheria." Mae nodded. "Well, that explains absolutely nothing to me."

Sorry, Entrapta.

"It's the name of my planet," Entrapta explained with a nod. "If you're not from Etheria, then does that mean you're not a princess?"

She was just kind of assuming. What with the whole cat-human thing Mae had going on. That was kinda princess-y.

"Your planet doesn't have a monopoly on princesses."

"Oooh are you a princess then?" Entrapta asked. "An Elemental princess? Can I experiment on your runestone?!"

"That seems like a really personal question. We barely know each other."

Mae. Don't be mean.

"What does that have to do with science?" Entrapta asked, missing the mean entirely.

". . . Wow, usually I'm the naive one."

"...why are you getting your hair all dirty?" Kagura asked, because that was the important question.

Entrapta looked at the other girl, confused, and then down at her hair, pulling a tendril up to examine it. "It mostly takes care of itself," she said, shrugging. "It never seems to get dirty anyway."

"But what if you step in dog poo?" Kagura asked, continuing the line of important questions. "You'd have it in your hair!"

That would be awful.

"Why would I do that?" Entrapta asked. "That seems counter-productive. And gross."

"You don't do it on purpose," Kagura said. "Sometimes it just happens because you're around a dog."

"Oh that's easy," Entrapta said. "I'm never around dogs. Or really any animals. Just robots. I even built robot rats!"

And they never had pooped anywhere. Because they were robots.

"...what do robot rats do?" Kagura asked, because the point of them didn't seem immediately apparent.

"They're very cute," Entrapta assured her.

...Honestly, that was the important thing.

"They also help with sanitation and maintenance."

"You built robot janitors?" Kagura replied, thinking on that for a second. "That way you don't have to do any of the house work!"

What a great idea.
