BWI Airport Portalocity Lounge, Saturday morning

"Portalocity lounge," Mae read aloud, and heaved a sigh of relief. "Finally. First time I ever travel alone and I get lost in the stupid airport." She walked into the lounge, looked around, and hopped up onto the bench, her duffel bag tucked under her feet. There was plenty of room, since her legs were too short to reach the ground. "Of course, it's bigger than, like, all of Possum Springs put together, so I guess that can't be too surprising. Good thing Mom and Dad insisted I take the early bus."

She tapped her heels on her duffel bag and eyed the door. "And now I'm talking to myself. Good job, Mae. Perfect first impression." She made her eyes comically wide and waved to an imaginary audience. "HeY, I'M mAe, i'M TOtallY NOrmAl, niCE To MEeT yoU." She frowned and tapped her feet harder. "Good job, Killer."

Another glance around the lounge. There wasn't a lot to look at yet.

"I wish I had a video game."

[NEWBIE SHUTTLE TIME! Possibly slightly early, but I want a distraction]

Mae blushed. She never knew how to react when people complimented her like that.

"What are you recording?"

"My notes," Entrapta said, waving the recorder around with her hair. "So later on I can access them when I'm putting together experiments and forming hypotheses! I also write out my notes sometimes," she added, her hair digging into her pockets to find a pad and a pencil, "but writing is slower than talking."

"You're going to build an experiment around going to school?"

"There's always time for another experiment!" Entrapta said, gleefully. "But also, I had thought that this building might be First Ones tech and was taking notes about what that would mean, but then I realized it wasn't, so I had to update that information."

Which was a little sad. Entrapta would have loved to find more First Ones tech.

"Oh cool. . . . First ones of what?"

"The first settlers of Etheria!" Entrapta said. "The First Ones. Advanced technology left behind by a lost civilization. Makes our modern innovations look like children's toys. The foundations of my research!"

"Ohhhh, in Etheria." Mae nodded. "Well, that explains absolutely nothing to me."

Sorry, Entrapta.

"It's the name of my planet," Entrapta explained with a nod. "If you're not from Etheria, then does that mean you're not a princess?"

She was just kind of assuming. What with the whole cat-human thing Mae had going on. That was kinda princess-y.

"Your planet doesn't have a monopoly on princesses."

"Oooh are you a princess then?" Entrapta asked. "An Elemental princess? Can I experiment on your runestone?!"

"That seems like a really personal question. We barely know each other."

Mae. Don't be mean.

"What does that have to do with science?" Entrapta asked, missing the mean entirely.

". . . Wow, usually I'm the naive one."

Entrapta just kept waiting for an answer.

"Anyway, no, I'm not a princess. It seems kind of like a lot of work, and I hate wearing skirts."

"Why would you have to wear skirts?" Entrapta asked, now thoroughly confused.

Mae said a lot of things that didn't follow the thing before it.

"Princesses on your planet have . . . runestones. Princesses on mine wear skirts."

Entrapta looked down at her coveralls and workboots and shoot her head. "Well that doesn't make any sense," she declared. "How are you supposed to climb around machinery and through vents in skirts?"

"That's what princesses do where you're from? Man, I could get behind being that kind of princess."

"Well, that's what I do," Entrapta said.

She didn't know much about what the other Etherian princesses did. She didn't get out much.

"I jump climb up to the tops of buildings and bounce around on electrical wires," Mae offered.
