BWI Airport Portalocity Lounge, Saturday morning

"Portalocity lounge," Mae read aloud, and heaved a sigh of relief. "Finally. First time I ever travel alone and I get lost in the stupid airport." She walked into the lounge, looked around, and hopped up onto the bench, her duffel bag tucked under her feet. There was plenty of room, since her legs were too short to reach the ground. "Of course, it's bigger than, like, all of Possum Springs put together, so I guess that can't be too surprising. Good thing Mom and Dad insisted I take the early bus."

She tapped her heels on her duffel bag and eyed the door. "And now I'm talking to myself. Good job, Mae. Perfect first impression." She made her eyes comically wide and waved to an imaginary audience. "HeY, I'M mAe, i'M TOtallY NOrmAl, niCE To MEeT yoU." She frowned and tapped her feet harder. "Good job, Killer."

Another glance around the lounge. There wasn't a lot to look at yet.

"I wish I had a video game."

[NEWBIE SHUTTLE TIME! Possibly slightly early, but I want a distraction]

Give Mae someone other than herself to talk to.

This bus is way nicer than the one Mae rode down to Baltimore on. If smaller.

We should have another Random Icon day. I love that button.

Kanan's best-laid plans to avoid some manner of traumatic bus-thievery had been thwarted by a pair of teenagers with an uncanny knack for picking locks and a disposable income that apparently had been spent on balloons and sequins. And of course he hadn't had time to check out the bus sooner that morning before taking off. He'd had to brew his caf so that he wouldn't need to get off the bus upon arriving at the airport today, after all. And Stance had needed a walk, and by the time he'd made it to the parking lot with only minutes to spare to keep himself on schedule, it was far too late to do anything about the purple and gold reversible sequin seat covers that had been equipped to every seat on the bus.

Or the blue and pink bedazzled steering wheel cover.

Or the large number of balloons that were hanging around the top of the bus, all of them dangling streamers.

Or, of course, the glitter. Everywhere.

So if Kanan looked a little bit resigned to this particular hell that was his life as he opened the bus and called out to the people waiting at the terminal today, it was because he'd found the girls' new calling card: A small toy bus sitting in the drivers' seat with a pretty bow tied to it.

Ah well, at least they hadn't stolen the thing.

"All aboard for Fandom! Mind the glitter."

Mae eyed the interior of the bus dubiously.

"Is that Fandom the school, or Fandom the strip club?"

Honestly . . . she was kind of hoping strip club.

That would have made for a very different educational experience, granted.

"The school," Kanan sighed. "The island doesn't have a strip club."

Which in hindsight was actually kind of weird, considering some of the locals.

Well. Trevor was sort of from a video game. Kinda.

At least he wasn't in that shitty barbarian outfit in this version. Instead he was in clothing that might be vaguely period appropriate. You know, For the 15th century.

"What. The fuck."

Language less so as he stumbled on into the waiting area.

Kaidan had talked to EDI and mentioned Kanan being the 'bus driver guy'. EDI had mentioned it to Jack. Jack had called the Portal place and changed her arrival destination.

That is how you get a bald tattooed nightmare stepping through a portal, smirking at Kanan and chirping brightly, "Think fast, Kanan!"

Before pitching that entire duffle right at him. Parts of it were soft. Most of it clanked.

And that was how you successfully managed to bean a Jedi with a duffle bag.

Okay, he didn't let it drop, no. He brought his arms up somewhere after the clanking heft of it got him upside the head, and was left standing there with it clutched to his chest like a small child or something while he stood there gaping.

But, mostly, that was how you mananged to bean a Jedi with a duffle bag.

"Jack?"

Kagura arrived in the lounge with a long black rectangle of pickled seaweed dangling out of her mouth, an open parasol over one shoulder, and a small suitcase in the opposite hand.

"...are there snacks?" she asked, in hopes someone would make her getting other food as low effort as possible for her.

Mae raised an eyebrow. "Nice cosplay, dude."

Was she sarcastic? It was hard to tell just now. If she wasn't, she was definitely hedging her bets to make sure she didn't obviously approve of his outfit.

"Not that I've seen. There's probably a vending machine around here somewhere, though."

"What kind of town doesn't have a strip club?"

Possum Springs had a strip club. And Possum Springs had only recently gotten a highway.

. . . Actually, that was probably part of why Possum Springs had a strip club.

"You know someone else can rock this look as good as me?" she smirked, flourishing a hand from neck to knees.

For once she was mostly dressed. Torn up black jeans and an equally torn up shirt over a tank top, leather jacket over top. Heavy black boots stretching to her knees.

That dumbfounded look was everything she wanted. Well. Almost.

She grinned at him, showing teeth. "Say hello to your school's newest Civics teacher."

His hand went immediately to the whip at his side because, you know, talking cat person. Then stared for a moment longer as he tried to put those words together.

"Alright. Had some bad beer. Everything's... Alright."

"A very small one on an island," Kanan supplied, "where nobody wants to bare too much ankle for too long."

Imagine the chaos if gremlins ever wandered in.

Actually, that thought was hilarious.

Yeah, that look wasn't going anywhere for a few minutes more.

"Civics teacher?"

Really, he could probably apply for a career as an echo, at this rate. Even while he kind of remembered that luggage went in the luggage compartment, and started sort of making his way there.

Mae nodded wisely. "My dad used to do that sometimes."

Her dad had stopped drinking entirely, these days.

"Are you going to boarding school, too?"

Maybe he got lost on the way to the Renaissance Festival.

"Oh my god I'm going to high school in pilgrim times."

She meant that metaphorically, poor bean.

Licking a finger she made a checkmark in the air. She'd stolen the gesture from Kaidan after he'd used it when scoring points off of her. Fair theft.

"Yup," she said, "Told you I was a teacher." Just in case you hadn't believed her. "Syllabus and all that good sh..stuff."

"Nah," Kanan replied, shaking his head. "The island just has an infestation nobody likes experiencing first-hand."

That was an improvement, right?

Kanan blinked, and then noted, slowly, "It's really weird hearing you censor yourself."

A pause.

"I don't even censor myself."

Just putting that out there, Jack.

Kagura made a face of disappointment, then went back to chewing her seaweed stick.

"What's the point in a waiting room if they don't give you snacks!" she declared, flopping down onto a bench and folding up her purple parasol. "You get stuck having to go to a dumb school too?"

She was completely unbothered by Mae's appearance. Just a different kind of Amanto, she figured.

"Oh yeah?"

Mae. Try to look a little less excited about that. You were going to get a reputation before you even made it to the island.

And Mae just figured Kagura was a weeaboo.

"I think it's for waiting," she pointed out. "And yep. It was either this dumb school or the dumb school back home. At least here I don't have dumb parents to deal with, too."

She was going to miss her mom and dad so hard.
