BWI Airport Portalocity Lounge, Saturday morning

"Portalocity lounge," Mae read aloud, and heaved a sigh of relief. "Finally. First time I ever travel alone and I get lost in the stupid airport." She walked into the lounge, looked around, and hopped up onto the bench, her duffel bag tucked under her feet. There was plenty of room, since her legs were too short to reach the ground. "Of course, it's bigger than, like, all of Possum Springs put together, so I guess that can't be too surprising. Good thing Mom and Dad insisted I take the early bus."

She tapped her heels on her duffel bag and eyed the door. "And now I'm talking to myself. Good job, Mae. Perfect first impression." She made her eyes comically wide and waved to an imaginary audience. "HeY, I'M mAe, i'M TOtallY NOrmAl, niCE To MEeT yoU." She frowned and tapped her feet harder. "Good job, Killer."

Another glance around the lounge. There wasn't a lot to look at yet.

"I wish I had a video game."

[NEWBIE SHUTTLE TIME! Possibly slightly early, but I want a distraction]

"Not that I've seen. There's probably a vending machine around here somewhere, though."

Kagura made a face of disappointment, then went back to chewing her seaweed stick.

"What's the point in a waiting room if they don't give you snacks!" she declared, flopping down onto a bench and folding up her purple parasol. "You get stuck having to go to a dumb school too?"

She was completely unbothered by Mae's appearance. Just a different kind of Amanto, she figured.

And Mae just figured Kagura was a weeaboo.

"I think it's for waiting," she pointed out. "And yep. It was either this dumb school or the dumb school back home. At least here I don't have dumb parents to deal with, too."

She was going to miss her mom and dad so hard.

"Yeah, dads are the worst," Kagura said, making that particular distinction herself. "You get partially eaten by one giant worm and suddenly you 'can't take care of yourself' and 'need better role models' and it's like you're not even an adult to them."

She was fourteen.

Kagura let out a sigh. "Who needs school, anyway?"

"Oh man, I know exactly what you mean."

Well, not the getting partially eaten, but Mae assumed that was hyperbole. She was, in fact, totally planning to borrow said presumed hyperbole for later, because it was awesome.

"Too bad you didn't get entirely eaten. That would have really shown him."

"Yeah, it sure would have," Kagura said, finally finishing her stick of seaweed. "'How do you like that, old man, I am now worm poo, oh no, your only child that didn't try to kill you, this is what you get for leaving all the time and letting me go work for an idiot samurai and idiot wannabe samurai'."

That was a heck of a run on sentiment, but that was Kagura for you. She patted her pockets and came up short for another seaweed stick. "...I should have packed more food."

"You're one up on me," Mae said. "I didn't pack any."

"I don't have any money, either," Kagura said, frowning a bit. "They better have food at the school. I'm hungry."

She was pretty much always hungry.

"So what did you do to get sent to this school?"

"Premarital sex."

That was a lie.

"Well who wants to get married anyway?" Kagura said. "Not me. I don't even want a boyfriend. Too annoying."

She wiped her hand on her pants leg and offered it for a shake. "I'm Kagura."

"Right? Boys are totally dumb!"

Mae returned the 'wipe the hand off' favor and shook. "Mae. I'm totally stealing that 'giant worm' line, by the way."

"It was a really big worm," Kagura said, because it was a worm that nearly ate a spaceport.

"It's dead now. Probably going to take a long time to clean up."

"Poor worm. It was just trying to do its worm thing. Eating people in peace."

That got a laugh out of Kagura. "Yeah, but you eat too many and then you get splatted," she said. "That's just the way it goes."

"That's beautiful," Mae said. "You should write that into a song."

"What, like an idol singer?" Kagura said, thinking that over. "I mean, it'd be nice to have a bunch of dumb boys who would do anything for me, but I think that'd probably get annoying really quick."

"I was thinking more, like, punk or metal or something. Giant worms sounds very metal to me."

"...that sounds like a lot of work," Kagura said. "Plus I don't know how to play any instruments."

Mae shrugged. "Neither do my friends and I, but we make do."

Their band had been together for, like, five minutes before . . . stuff happened. But still, that counted, right?

"Then you can write the song," Kagura said. "If you've already got a band than someone can write about a giant worm and then you can tell everyone I was your inspiration."

"Hmmm." Mae tilted her head and closed her eyes. "GIANT WOOOOOORM! GIANT WOOOOOOOOOOOOORM! IT'LL EAT YOUR WHOLE TOWN GIANT WOOOOOOOOOOOOOOORM!"

It wasn't so much musical as shouty, but that fit the genre.
