Miguel eyed today’s suggested experiment sideways, then shrugged. “Okay. Today’s is another song. Which I don’t even think we have to listen to, though hey, if that’s your thing...” He shrugged and played it. “It’s called, ‘What is the Light? (An Untested Hypothesis Suggesting that the Chemical in our Brains by Which We are able to Experience the Sensation of Being in Love is the Same Chemical that Caused the “Big Bang” that was the Birth of the Accelerating Universe’.”

He set up the lab with brain-scan equipment and small contained globes of proto-matter. “So, find someone in love - yourself or a classmate, or heck, go looking - test their brains, and then once you have a chemical nailed down, synthesize it - I’ll just program it in for you, that’s not the point of today’s lesson - add it to your little pre-universe, and see if you can make it go boom.”

Hopefully not along with the rest of the class.

Norman just sort of sat there, boggling for a moment.

"Um," he finally ventured. "Is anyone here in love?"

He wasn't. He maybe had a crush or two? But love? Noooo.

"Don't look at me." Miguel shrugged. "Maybe the moose; you could try him."

It'd serve him right for okaying this class.

Or maybe he could call Zack.

"I enjoy breathing too much to ask a moose if I can scan its brain."

And he didn't know Zack.

Yeah, no, unless it was lifting the entire building, Miguel could handle that on his own.

"We're doing an exercise where we have to start by isolating the neurochemical that says we're in love. You're in love, right?"

Zack... wasn't entirely sure he understood the question.

"I mean... of course I am," he said, sounding a little dubious. "You need to do what to my neuros?"

Zack Fair was not a man of science.

"Oh! Scan your brain," Miguel explained. "I've replicated one of my lab machines in the Danger Shop here, so it'd basically mean sitting in a chair with a dorky looking helmet on for a few minutes."

Well, that or peeing in a cup, but Miguel knew which one he preferred to deal with.

This was probably not going to end how Miguel was hoping for it to end.

"Hey, it's just sitting still for a few minutes, promise." Miguel shrugged at the phone. "I'd do it myself, but we need someone in love."

Astrid, meanwhile, had just been thoroughly shunned and abandoned by the only person she ever thought would even be capable of loving her even a little, soooo....

"Yeah," she murmured, frowning at Mr. O'Hara with a glower that suggested he should maybe just stick with plants and things with pinwheels, "this whole theory seems incredibly flawed and unscientific straight out the gate. Not only is the likelihood of finding anyone actually in love unlikely, but the whole idea that it would have the power to create anything but a misleading psychosomatic response is...."

She was just going to go ahead and say it. "Stupid. It's stupid. Love is just a lie we tell ourselves to explain away our bodies and brains doing things we can't otherwise control."

She did like the song, though.

But she was kinda going through some stuff right now, okay, and really wondering why she kept bothering going to class.

"You just now think the theory is flawed?" Miguel said, incredulous. "Every theory we've worked with is insane. How is this any worse?"
