Practical Ethics, Tuesday, October 2, 2018

Today's class was in the Danger Shop, and it was set up to look like a typical office cubical farm, complete with desks, computers, office supplies, and coffee that had been cooking way too long. "Today we will be doing a practical test of your personal ethics," Anakin began.

"Or your looting skills!" Aphra added, slipping some pens in her pocket.

Aphra, no.

"Or your ethics put those back," Anakin said.

"It can be both," Aphra protested, putting some of the pens back. "Basically this place is filled with sweet, sweet free office supplies, but you're not supposed to take any,"

"Because they aren't yours," Anakin said. "They're also no one checking to see if you showed up on time, take a long lunch, or leave early. Or even if you just spend your time here playing Minesweeper instead of the really interesting spreadsheet we've set up for you."

"Abandoned goods count as salvage!" It was pretty obvious which teacher had come up with this idea, wasn't it?

"They're not abandoned!"

They'll be at this awhile, kids.

Ordinarily, sticking Theron in an office and expecting him to look at spreadsheets would have had him bouncing off the walls in a way that no amount of meditation would fix, but today he just kind of stared at the screen.

He was probably coming down with something, certainly not moping over his completely expected lack of visitors over the weekend.

Of course, Sidon would be more than happy to work diligently and not steal office supplies (where would he hide them, anyway?) if it weren't for the fact that he very much had no idea what to do in a situation like that. Not to mention that computers still made him incredibly nervous, as he was one who liked to keep rather damp, and damp and electronics did not a good combination make, and the whole, you know, even small amounts of errant electricity could be nearly fatal to an unsuspecting Zora.

Of course, they were Danger Shop computers, so he realized that there was no actual danger in one shorting out and causing him irreparable harm, but the small knot of worry was still here in the pit of his stomach all the same.

"Erm," he said after a moment, tentatively lifting a hand, "might someone perhaps help me figure out exactly what must be done here? Or perhaps there is a task that is in need of completion that requires a bit...fewer computers? It's all a bit out of my scope of knowledge, and I think the ethical thing to do is to admit that I was probably not the most outstanding selection for hire in this particular type of work setting."

"That's what becoming a supervisor is for!"

Aphra, no.

Aphra, yes! You certainly had Sidon's curiosity by the headtail now.

"And how might one make a transition into a supervisor?" he asked.

Sidon was just that little bit too earnest for Aphra to go with her first instinctive comment about rising to the level of your incompetence. Instead "They'll notice your enthusiasm."

It was very noticeable, after all.

"Oh!" This was, clearly, excellent news indeed. "Well, then, I may just be so bold to think that I would make an excellent candidate for supervisor! I would like to do that, please."

Eh, why not? He was probably just as qualified as some of her real supervisors over the years.

"You're hired, go motivate your underlings."

Aphra, no.

Sabine raised her hand. "Are we being punished?"

Aphra slid a pack of markers across to Sabine. "By him, maybe."

She was so grateful right now.

"I'll remember that," Sabine said, sliding the markers the rest of the way.

She was okay falling this assignment as opposed to going insane.

She wasn't failing, she was engaging in traditional Mandalorian practices of celebrating victory over her foes with commemorative artwork!

Just because the enemy in question was the concept of white collar employment...
