Practical Ethics, Tuesday, Period 3

"Hello again," Anakin said from the front of the class.

Aphra waved at them. "So we realised we never did introductions last week." Because you derailed the conversation, Dr I-used-to-work-for-Darth-Vader.

Details! "And we could probably figure it out eventually," Anakin said, "but this seems more expedient. So today, you give us your name, and then two truths and a lie about yourself. And we'll all try to guess the lie."

"For example, I'm a rogue archeologist, I once defeated an insane immortal Jedi, and I think Skywalker's hair looks great." Aphra trusted that everyone would be able to pick up on the blatant, completely unbelievable lie about Anakin's hair.

Anakin's glare said that he didn't need the Jedi mind-reading skills to know which was her lie. "I'm a Jedi, I have five children, and I've been teaching here since 2007," he said, ~~making all the muns feel ancient~~.

He pointed at the person least likely to be paying attention at the moment. "You. Go."

Try and figure out their lies.

On the one hand, the hair was a gimme, on the other Theron was going to make some terrible hair related choices of his own, on the third hand... "Wouldn't the immortal preclude killing thme. Also the Jedi Order aren't that big on having kids."

Not that Theron had any issues there, no sir.

"I said I defeated them, not killed."

Just don't ask what she'd done after she'd yanked Eternal Rur out of his mainframe.

Anakin smiled. "No, no they aren't big on having kids. Well. Depending on your timeline."

"Five kids sounds like a lot, and the immortal Jedi thing sounds fake but I know you don't like the hair."

What.

If you wanted to get technical Eternal Rur was actually a fake insane, immortal Jedi, but pfff, details.

"That's because it's terrible hair."

"I believe," Sidon proposed after some thought, "that Dr. Aphra's lie is the one about the immortal Jedi, as I cannot see how anyone would think Master Skywaker's hair is anything but great anyay, though it's very amusing to think otherwise, and I believe Master Skywalker's is the one about his number of children. It is not an unreasonable number, but a number like that seems like something that is easy to lie about. The year would be, as well, but I am following my gut with that one."

Anakin smiled. "You would be correct," he said. "I have four children."

A week late and full of lies.

"My name's Theron, I was born in the middle of a war, my grandfather raised me, I get along great with my parents."

Theron, honey, it was two truths and lie, not one truth, one half-truth and one flat-out whopper.

"Kid, it works better if you don't have two options that tend to be mutually exclusive."

Beat.

"Unless you named the murder droid 'my parents'."

Sabine didn't lie about things, she just withheld information. So this was not her favorite thing.

"I'm Sabine, I'm from Krownest, this isn't my real hair, and I have a sister."

Was it cheating if Aphra came from further along enough in the timeline that she'd seen Sabine's bounty listing? Did Aphra care if it was?

"It's the sister thing."

Practically bouncing, Sidon launched into his usual rigmarole.

"I am Sidon!" he announced, pumping his fist! Flashing his teeth! Clearly way too excited about this. "The Zora Prince! I am from the land of Hyrule, I am taller than my father, and I am terribly thrilled that we got to do introductions for this class after all!"

Unless Sidon was much better at faking enthusiasm than Aphra it probably wasn't the last. "I'm guessing your father's a tall one."

"Yes!" Definitely no faked enthusiasm there; Sidon was far too thrilled to hear Aphra get the right answer, despite the fact that it pretty much meant he was terrible at this game. "Why, you got it nearly straight away! That's very impressive, I must say! My father is much taller than I am, as one would expect from a Zora king, though I may one day surpass him, if I am so lucky! But I still have...oh, at least one hundred and fifty years before I can even begin to catch up, I'd say!"

"I'm Bobby," he gave a little wave. "Um. There are two of me in the timeline I come from, I'm going to miss the hot summer weather, and I love food."

"There being two of you is a very random thing to make up."

"My name's Nell Ingram," she said. "I'm married, I'm good with plants, and I have two siblings."

"The marriage thing is too strange not to be true," Anakin said, "but I have questions."

"I probly have answers," Nell said.

"How old were you when you got married?" Anakin asked.

"I was twelve. Been married three years now. But..." she blushed. "I ain't - John said he'd wait till I was fifteen before I have to... you know."

"And how old is John?" Anakin asked carefully.

"I don't rightly know," Nell said. "Round 'bout 55 or 60 maybe?"

Anakin didn't make an ew face, but it was a close thing. "How did you meet him?"

"He saved me," Nell said plainly. "My family was gonna marry me off - sell me off really - to the Colonel, a nasty old church elder. John and Leah offered to marry me so I'd be safe. Even moved right out of the church complex to keep me safe."

There was a lot more to that story that John had kept from her, but it would be a while before Nell found out.

Anakin had a lot of Feelings about slavery, go figure.

"Even if he saved you, and even if you're married, you never, ever have to feel obligated to sleep with him," he said.

Nell didn't even know how to respond to that. A man telling her she didn't need to...? With her husband?

"I think the church an my husband might disagree with you. And if he doesn't keep me," Nell swallowed hard. "That colonel might just get me and he won't give me any choice. I think I'm safer with John."

Anakin's heart broke just a little bit for this kid. "Did John know you were coming here?"

It took all Nell had not to cry and her eyes might have filled a little. "No. I just showed up here out of nowhere. He doesn't know nothing and Leah just died a little while ago, so he's alone and he'll worry or maybe be mad and... it's just all a mess."

Anakin, even after four kids and two little ones that he was actually helping to raise, was not great with tears. He flailed a little internally.

"He seems very understanding, from what you've told me?" he offered.

"Not... much," Nell admitted. "But he's never treated me mean."

He wasn't really unkind to her, but then she didn't expect kindness from a man.

"Yo, I'm Yang, I've got a younger sister, I'm not from around here, and my favorite drink is a Peach Perfection on ice."

Yang, maaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaybe don't admit to your teachers that you go drinking? Maybe? Even if you're lying about what drink it is?

"And I'm calling bullshit on the hair and kids. You look like you've had too much sleep for five kids." Of any age.

"You seem like the kind to like something a little more exciting drinks wise." Let's not examine too closely how Aphra spent her own teen years. "Yeah, he's only got the one."

Hear that? That was the sound of Aphra's survival instincts refusing to acknowledge anything Anakin said about his actual number of children.

"Well, a Peach Perfection does have eight different types of alcohol in it," Yang pointed out. "It's great if you want to get smashed fast and never feel the hammer until you wake up."

YANG.

"But I prefer a Strawberry Sunrise, no ice. Oh! And one of those little umbrellas."

"The little umbrella make everything tastier. It's just science."

If anyone was looking to Aphra to be any kind of role model other than 'the worst' they were sorely mistaken.

Lying liars who lie.
