Fandom High Welcome Picnic, Front Lawn of the School, All Day: Part II

The tables and chairs had been scattered around the lawn - some near the food, some not, some in the shade, some not - and the food was ready for anyone who wanted to come by and greet the new people.

Enjoy your last picnic where shirtlessness will be enjoyable until next summer, folks!

[OCD is up! This is the picnic post for general mingling. Roommates, fake siblings and teachers are all here. Since it's outside, the picnic is open to all students, teachers, and townies!]

New sibling and roommate both met, Tip settled in with some snacks and her camera, all set to capture the magic of a new fall semester.

She'd come a long way from her days of just snapping pictures of the aliens to show J.Lo. She was going for the full range of the Fandom experience.

So she was mostly snapping pictures of people who looked shell-shocked and unprepared for their new reality.

Well, hey, there, other person with a camera taking pictures. Please don't mind another photographer thinking he's funny by getting a picture of someone trying to get a picture of something else.

Prompto fully intended to use those shots to prove to Noctis that, see? He wasn't a complete nerd if someone else was doing it!

Tip raised her camera at the guy in salute. "Nice. What kind you got?"

"What?" asked Prompto, smirking uncontrollably as he shrugged and gave his own camera a cursory look. "This old thing? Just a bla bla bla details my canon will never be able to provide for me, nothing much, but I did refurbish it a little with a deeper scope for better range and zoom."

The effort it took for him to sound that casual about it and shrug it off was ridiculous, really. He cocked his chin up as he eyed hers. "What're you rocking?"

"Refurbished 70s Poloroid," Tip said, holding it up. "I've got a fancy digital one, too, but I love these old things. Gotta love instant gratification."

"I don't know if I'm familiar with that kind," Prompto admitted, since he definitely wasn't familiar with it at all, and his head tilted curiously, "but you had me at instant gratification."

Tip laughed. "Here, I'll show you." She held up her camera and lined up a shot of him. "Say cheese!"

A camera was up, and so Prompto was posing, quick to shift to his best angle, give his best crooked grin, and toss up a peace sign. "Cheeeeeeese!"

Tip laughed and took the picture. The camera whirred, and the thin, white square photo paper came sliding out of the front. Tip pulled it out and started shaking it.

"Now we just wait a couple moments for the chemicals to do their thing, and you'll have your picture!" She held it up. "It's fun to watch it develop, too."

"Oh, no way,"said Prompto, bouncing slightly where he stood before moving in closer for a better look, his mouth hanging a little open in its excited grin, eyeing the camera with fascination. "So it's a special kind of film, huh? Everything you need to develop it right already in there? That's so cool; that's...that," his voice took on a seriously approving tone, "is brilliant!"

"Yup! It's all in there," Tip said. "It doesn't have the sharpest colors or resolution, which I guess is why it went out of style, but I love it. And thanks to Fandom, it's not too hard to find more film."

"Do they sell those here, then, somewhere?" Prompto asked, his mind whizzing right by the brief question of how he was going to afford it when he had all of 100 gil to his name. "I mean, this guy," he waved his camera in the air a little, "works great, but, I mean...hey, who doesn't love new shiny toys, right?"

And with the excitement of seeing how other people's new shiny toys reaching a nice steady level, he got a chance to really see the person behind the camera and had to grin.

He loved this new school.

"I'm Prompto, by the way," he added, making a little gesture with his hand to highlight the nametag he'd slapped onto his vest. The nametag that, over the course of the day, seemed to have gained a big bold exclamation point after his name, a few stars here and there, and a ltitle doodle of something that looked like a little fat bird.

"Well, I special order through Portalocity. And I brought this from home. But they might! You can find all sorts of things in this town."

"Why did you-un just take my picture?" Nell asked with some concern.

"You might have been caught in that last frame," Tip admitted. She pulled the Poloroid out of the front of the old camera and shook it. "But if you were, I can give it to you to destroy if you need to."

Film wasn't cheap, but Tip wasn't going to fuss if this girl was on the lamb or something. She usually asked people first for portraits, but group shots she just kind of took.

Nell frowned. "You'd give it to me?"

The girl couldn't have planned to use it for some nefarious purposes then.

"No... that's all right. I guess I'm just on edge, ending up here and everything."

"You sure?" Tip asked, then tucked the photo in question into her bag. "Let me know if you change your mind. I'm Tip, by the way."

"Tip," Nell repeated. "And you're here of your own free will, it looks like."

She sighed, then made herself put on a small smile. "Nell Ingram. Nice to meet you. Thank you for your kindness."

"Yup. I've also been here for years, so." Tip shrugged. "But the island grabs people pretty often. Where are you from?"

"East Tennessee, just outside of Knoxville," Nell said.

She looked down at the ground for a moment. "You said the island grabs people pretty often? Do they get to go home or are the stuck here forever? My husband's gonna be pretty upset that I've just up and disappeared."

And what about her sisters? She always hoped that one day she'd be able to rescue them from the church.

"Your . . . ?" HOW OLD WAS THIS GIRL? "Um. I think it depends? I know one of the teachers got stuck here for awhile, but he eventually got to go home to visit."

She was almost 15. Almost time to have to take up her wifely duties. Not that she was looking forward to that.

"Eventually." Nell swallowed hard. "Sounds like I'm not gonna make it home in time to cook supper then."

YUP, THAT WAS HORRIFYING. CONGRATULATIONS NELL, TIP WAS TOTALLY ADOPTING YOU.

"Yeah, probably not," Tip said. "Um. Sorry?"

Nell looked around. "It's not a bad place, I guess."

She bit her lip. "A lot of the people - I've never seen anything like them before. Is it safe here? Do the men bother the womenfolk much?"

"Nah. And if they do, everyone will pile on and kick their asses." Tip shrugged with a small smile. "So, um. Do you mind if I ask when you're from?"
