Fandom High Welcome Picnic, Front Lawn of the School, All Day: Part II

The tables and chairs had been scattered around the lawn - some near the food, some not, some in the shade, some not - and the food was ready for anyone who wanted to come by and greet the new people.

Enjoy your last picnic where shirtlessness will be enjoyable until next summer, folks!

[OCD is up! This is the picnic post for general mingling. Roommates, fake siblings and teachers are all here. Since it's outside, the picnic is open to all students, teachers, and townies!]

"Yup. I've also been here for years, so." Tip shrugged. "But the island grabs people pretty often. Where are you from?"

"East Tennessee, just outside of Knoxville," Nell said.

She looked down at the ground for a moment. "You said the island grabs people pretty often? Do they get to go home or are the stuck here forever? My husband's gonna be pretty upset that I've just up and disappeared."

And what about her sisters? She always hoped that one day she'd be able to rescue them from the church.

"Your . . . ?" HOW OLD WAS THIS GIRL? "Um. I think it depends? I know one of the teachers got stuck here for awhile, but he eventually got to go home to visit."

She was almost 15. Almost time to have to take up her wifely duties. Not that she was looking forward to that.

"Eventually." Nell swallowed hard. "Sounds like I'm not gonna make it home in time to cook supper then."

YUP, THAT WAS HORRIFYING. CONGRATULATIONS NELL, TIP WAS TOTALLY ADOPTING YOU.

"Yeah, probably not," Tip said. "Um. Sorry?"

Nell looked around. "It's not a bad place, I guess."

She bit her lip. "A lot of the people - I've never seen anything like them before. Is it safe here? Do the men bother the womenfolk much?"

"Nah. And if they do, everyone will pile on and kick their asses." Tip shrugged with a small smile. "So, um. Do you mind if I ask when you're from?"

Nell's eyes went wide. "Really?" This definitely wasn't anything like home.

"When I'm from?" she asked, feeling confused all over again. "I'm from now. Year of our Lord 2008."

"Only ten years ago?!"

Tip, that was not the proper response here.

"Right, so here it's 2018. That doesn't mean that you can't go back to your time, though!"

"2018!" Nell stared at her. "And what do you mean only? And how can I possibly go back when it's ten years in the future? How can that even happen?"

"Time travel is a thing," Tip said. "And, um. I mean, I don't remember people saying 'womenfolk' a lot ten years ago?"

Of course, ten years ago she'd been six, so.

"Clearly you-un wasn't raised by God's Cloud of Glory Church," Nell said. "When I remember and I put my mind to it, I can talk better, but some things just slip out."

"No, I was raised Catholic," Tip said. "And, like, only because Mom's Italian and going to church was a habit."

After the invasion, she and Tip had agreed that there didn't seem to be much of a reason to keep going.

"Least you're Christian," Nell said, then hesitated. "Not that I suppose what you call yourself matters much if you're a good person and you sure seem to be. Sure as shootin', most of the elders of God's Cloud of Glory are terrible men and I know that for a fact."

"Yeah, those sorts tend to be all over no matter what community you're in," Tip said. She really hadn't been Christina for awhile now. "It's definitely a better plan to judge people on what they do, not what label they use."

Nell nodded. "And I expect if I'm not hallucinating or something, that there's a lot in this place I'm just not gonna have a reference for, so I'm best off doing that anyway."

"That's definitely the right attitude to have around here. I've been here more than two years and I still get thrown."

For instance, by someone around her own age having a husband.

"Have you met your big sib yet?"

Nell nodded. "Very nice person, name of Norman. Made me feel much more at ease, he did. Do you know him?"

Tip grinned. "Oh yeah, Norman's the best. You lucked out there."

She wouldn't have been ready to hear it, but being pulled into Fandom might have been the biggest stroke of luck she could have asked for.

"I guess I did at that. I suppose I can't say today was entirely an unlucky day then - having met such nice people as I did. Thank you, Tip."

It got her away from whatever backwoods church thought a young teenager getting married was a good idea in 2008, so yeah, Tip would agree with that sentiment very thoroughly.

"You're welcome. I'm sure Norman will have you covered, but if you need anything and he's not around, I live in room 411."

"Thank you," Nell said. "And if I can help you in any way, I am in room 219."

She looked around. "It seems to be a small island so I am hopeful we will run into each other again."

"Probably all the time. Especially if we have any classes together." Tip tilted her head. "I'm guessing you probably don't know what you're signed up for yet, if you weren't planning to come here at all, huh."

"Actually Norman helped me check and I have Cooking 101, Practical Ethics, and Humanoid Health and First Aid. He and I are both in the First Aid one as it turns out." Nell wasn't so sure she needed the cooking class since she'd been doing that all her life, but maybe they'd have new recipes she could learn.

"Are you in any of those?"

Tip shook her head. "Nope. I'm taking the two 'bad ass' classes and the one on domesticated animals." She shrugged. "I'm also in the library every Monday, though, and if I do Student Council again, I'll be around selling, like, dance tickets and stuff. So I'll definitely be around."
