Fandom High Welcome Picnic, Front Lawn of the School, All Day: Part I

Everyone had been keeping a close eye on the weather, and gave a sigh of relief as it turned out to be a pretty decent day. Sure, it was still a little warm, but it wasn't humid, or raining something strange. You had to take your wins where you could get them around here.

As usual, there was a buffet of food awaiting the folks on the welcome shuttle, and blue and gold tables and chairs were set up across the lawn, most still covered in glitter from the last picnic. Sorry ~~not~~! Happy picnic day!

[OCD is up! This is part one of the picnic, specifically for meeting siblings, roommates, and teachers. The rest of the picnic is happening here. Since it's outside, the picnic is open to all students, teachers, and townies!]

"Little green scaly things, about the size of large cats. Their venom is hallucinogenic."

She was helpful!

"... What?" He just blinked for a moment, then rolled his eyes. "Ha, ha. Very funny, hazing the new kid."

"Nope. Okay, well . . . sort of. We do like to break your brains fast from the start, so you get used to it. Like ripping off a bandaid." Tip shrugged. "But the gremlins are real. They're the school mascot and everything."

"The, uh. Gremlins. Are real."

Sorry, Tip, but he's pretty much just staring at you blankly right now while his brain tried to catch up. He still didn't quite believe you, of course, but he's pretty sure that you believe it! That's a start, right?

Tip was very convincing.

"And vindictive," Tip said. "So I take it you come from a pretty boring world and time period, then."

"... I come from this world?" Simon ventured, although he was starting to think that maybe that wasn't quite as right as he'd expected. "And it's... I mean. Time period? What? You're not talking, like, time travel or something, are you?"

What?

He was really starting to consider the idea that the pamphlets had left out a lot of information.

"It's technically interdimensional travel, I think," Tip said. "Apparently not all the Earths line up temporally. I got really into this whole 'multiverse anthropologist' phase when I first got here, and let me tell you, it gets pretty wild. Like, I'm from Pennsylvania and it's 2018 back home just like it is here, but on my Earth we got invaded by aliens when I was 11, and I've met people from Earths where the dead rose, or teenagers get trained up as assassins, or it's the mid-1990s."

Simon was probably becoming more and more certain he was rooming with a crazy person, wasn't he. Or someone way to into science fiction.

Simon wanted to believe that. Simon really, really wanted to believe that. But Simon was coming closer to the conclusion that it was possibly (maybe) all a little true.

"... Yeah, I'm from 2018," he said, after a moment. He looked around again, and took a better look at the blue girl, noticed another person with a similar headpiece -- headpiece? Was it part of them? Noticed a big, tall, green guy who was... actually kinda hot, although Simon barely knew how to process that part of it even without the "big, tall, green" bit.

"She's not wearing a bunch of blue makeup, is she?" Simon asked, trying to point at Vette, across the way, without being obvious about it.

"I mean, she might be," Tip said, smiling in the direction of her new little sib. "But probably in the same way another girl might be wearing a bunch of brown or peach make up. Since, you know, foundation is a thing."

"I was afraid you'd say that."

Simon took a deep breath, then held out his hand. "So, hi, I'm Simon Spier, and I have absolutely no idea what I'm doing here."

"Hi, Simon Spier," Tip said. "I'm Tip Tucci, and if I hadn't been here for two years already, I'd be in the same boat, so don't worry." The small, silver bug-sized "barrette" that had been sitting in Tip's hair darted up into the air, creating an intricate cloud of bubbles. "And this is Bill. He says 'hi'."

Okay, that was... That was kinda cool, actually. "Uh, hi, Bill." Simon gave the... thing? barrette? a little wave.

Really, what was one more strange thing. "I think I owe Vette an apology," Simon said, considering. "I totally thought she was some, like, super-, uh, enthusiastic cosplayer."

"That's probably a good plan. We discussed the potential virtues of her kicking people who stare too hard."

"I wasn't staring," Simon insisted, rather indignantly. And it's true, really -- aside from a few glances, he'd slept through too much of the busride to do any staring at all.

... But the glances were probably a bit much, nonetheless. "But... yeah, no, that's fair. I'd probably feel the same way."

"There aren't a whole lot of people out there who like that kind of attention. Though I guess if she had been a cosplayer, she'd be flattered?"

"God." Simon rubbed his hands over his face and sighed. "Okay. This is... I don't even know what this is. You're sure you're serious? This is all... Like. Real."

Sorry, Tip, this might be a recurring theme for the next couple of days.

"I mean, I can't definitely guarantee this isn't one big weird shared fever dream," Tip said. "But that'd be true no matter what."

Existentialism could be a real bitch.

"Yeah, fair." Simon shook his head, trying to clear it. "I think... I think I need to go get some food. Uh, I guess I'll see you in the room later?"

"See you then," Tip agreed. "And we can figure out if you want to hang a sheet or anything as a room divider."

She'd heard about people don't that, sometimes, in mixed gender rooms. And Simon seemed at least a little shy.

"That... sounds like a good idea," Simon said. "Uh, thanks."

"No problem. And if you need anything else from me to make you more comfortable, let me know?" Tip shrugged sheepishly. "The first time I lived with a boy it was in a car and he was an alien, so I got pretty used to, like, no boundaries."

Simon's jaw dropped, just a little; he wasn't quite gaping, but Tip could probably see his brain catching up with that statement. "Uh," he said, after a moment, "yeah. I can see how that would..."

He smiled, a little sheepishly. "Thanks. I'm going to go-" He waved towards the food tables. "Food now."

"That's fair," Tip said, smiling a little. "I promise to stop trying to break your brain more for awhile."
