Fandom High Welcome Picnic, Front Lawn of the School, All Day: Part I

Everyone had been keeping a close eye on the weather, and gave a sigh of relief as it turned out to be a pretty decent day. Sure, it was still a little warm, but it wasn't humid, or raining something strange. You had to take your wins where you could get them around here.

As usual, there was a buffet of food awaiting the folks on the welcome shuttle, and blue and gold tables and chairs were set up across the lawn, most still covered in glitter from the last picnic. Sorry not! Happy picnic day!

[OCD is up! This is part one of the picnic, specifically for meeting siblings, roommates, and teachers. The rest of the picnic is happening here. Since it's outside, the picnic is open to all students, teachers, and townies!]

Hannibal heard Ino address the man as she ran off, then came over to him with a smile and his hand out for a shake. "Pastor Carter? I am Doctor Hannibal Lecter. I'm supposed to help you find your feet as a teacher."

Carter blinked, bewildered for another moment, then shook his head with a soft laugh as he reached out to shake the doctor's hand.

"Yes, I'm Pastor Carter," he said, "and Dr. Lecter, your presence here means that... Iris was not joking, was she?"

The paperwork looked official enough but he hadn't even had a chance to go through it yet.

"If you mean about your teaching, then no," Hannibal said. "Although if you mean about anything else, the answer is likely to be yes. But you are indeed teaching, and I am here to answer any questions you may have."

"Oh. I... I have never taught a class before," he admitted. "Nor had I expected to, quite honestly."

Hannibal nodded. "You would not be the first. Fortunately, the students here are largely self-sufficient, and many are helpful. For that part, I am certain you'll do fine. Or at least, it will not be the largest hurdle. If I may ask, where are you from? What do you know about this place so far."

That he could answer quite easily, and with some relief.

"I'm from Mineral Town. It's a small place, a few days away from the nearest city," he said, like that explained exactly where it was. "I do not know much, I'm afraid. I saw a posting for the church here, and thought it might make for an interesting change of pace."

"Is that in the United States?" Hannibal asked. "Or even on Earth? We have people from many different worlds and times here. Everyone has different expectations."

"What are the United States?" Carter asked curiously. "Of course, we are on Earth, however..."

He blinked.

"Different worlds?" Carter asked, a bit tentatively.

"The United States is the name of the country this island is nominally a part of," Hannibal explained. "It is one of the more prominent countries in my version of Earth. So, if you haven't heard of it, it's likely you and I are from different worlds."

"Oh," he said faintly. "That... that is a large thing to think about."

"It can be," Hannibal said. "But it can be quite a wonderful thing. You are liable to meet many sorts of people you might never dream of at home.

"Tell me about your Earth," he prompted. "Is there magic? Nonhumans? Odd happenings?"
