Fandom High Welcome Picnic, Front Lawn of the School, All Day: Part I

Everyone had been keeping a close eye on the weather, and gave a sigh of relief as it turned out to be a pretty decent day. Sure, it was still a little warm, but it wasn't humid, or raining something strange. You had to take your wins where you could get them around here.

As usual, there was a buffet of food awaiting the folks on the welcome shuttle, and blue and gold tables and chairs were set up across the lawn, most still covered in glitter from the last picnic. Sorry not! Happy picnic day!

[OCD is up! This is part one of the picnic, specifically for meeting siblings, roommates, and teachers. The rest of the picnic is happening here. Since it's outside, the picnic is open to all students, teachers, and townies!]

Nell gaped at her. "You think I came here on purpose?! I was out in my own woods, mindin' my own business, and suddenly I'm here! I got snatched or something!"

"I didn't realize anyone came here but on purpose," Lana said. "You're the second one to say you simply ended up here, though. Did you touch some sort of relic?"

"A relic? No, I was just in my woods - Soulwood - where my husband and Leah-" She stopped herself. It was still hard to think of John's other wife who'd been sister/mother/friend to her. It hadn't even been a year since her death.

"Where my husband and I live. I didn't touch anything."

Was it reassuring or worrying that she apparently wasn't the only one who'd just shown up here?

"Hm. Apparently something interesting is going on here, then." Lana loved a good mystery. "Well, until you find out how to get home, you'll still need a place to stay. Might as well room where the school's put you for now." She was also practical.

"I suppose that makes sense," Nell said slowly.

She took a deep breath and held out her hand. "Nell Ingram. Pleased to meet you."

Lana shook her hand. "Lana Beniko," she said again. "A pleasure. You said you have a husband, but he isn't here?"

"John?" Nell shook her head. "No. Least not that I've seen and believe me, he won't be happy about this. He must be back where I come from, waitin' on me to get in from the chores."

"Can you call him?" Lana asked. "Do you want to?" So far he sounded less like a husband and more like a master, though she'd try not to judge.

"We-uns don't have a phone," Nell said. "Too easy for the government to eavesdrop. We pretty much live off the grid. It's a hard life, but we're free."

"I'd imagine so." Lana would keep her personal feelings on government out of this; she knew how some folks felt about the Empire. Maybe Nell was a former slave?

"Well, hopefully you'll manage to get back home again soon, then. Do you mind telling me where you're from?"

Not a slave. Exactly. Just raised in a cult-like church.

"East Tennessee," Nell said. "Just outside of Knoxville. It's nothing like this. Where are you from?"

"Dromund Kaas," Lana answered. "Also nothing like this. I've never heard of East Tennessee or Knoxville, I'm afraid."

"Dromund Kaas. Is that like in the Netherlands or something?" Nell asked. "Sound like it must be far away. At least I know Maryland's only a few states away from where I am."

"It's...in the Kaas system," Lana said. "Seat of the Empire. Ah, wait - are you from this planet, then?"

"From this planet?" Nell's mouth dropped open. "Are you saying you're not?"

Maybe this wasn't some government holding place. Maybe this was a looney bin.

"It's my first time here," Lana confirmed. "It's apparently in a different galaxy entirely."

Nell took a deep breath. "Okay. So... you're from another galaxy. This is going to take a lot of getting used to."

"The bus driver was saying this planet hasn't even really got space travel yet?" Lana asked. "I imagine it would be an adjustment."

"Yeah, I'll say." Nell took a deep breath. "And I grew up what you might call sheltered, so all this... it's testing me some."

"Sheltered how?" Lana asked. She supposed she could be considered sheltered herself after spending so long on Korriban with only other Sith, but that wasn't what most people meant by the word.

"We... the church I grew up in, God's Cloud of Glory... we kept to ourselves. No outside schooling or influences. No modern clothes or technology. Till I married John when I was 12 I was almost never even out of the compound," Nell said. "Even after I only ever went to the market. And the library if I could sneak a little time."

"That sounds..." terrible. "Very sheltered, yes," Lana agreed. "Oh, I do hope this place has a good library."

Nell's eyes went wide. "Oh, do you think so? Even a not so good one would be amazing! There's no one here to tell me I can't read something!"

She could spend hours there!

"Every school should have one, I'd think," Lana said. "And if anybody tries to tell you you can't read something, let me know, and I'll get it for you."
