Fandom High Welcome Picnic, Front Lawn of the School, All Day: Part I

Everyone had been keeping a close eye on the weather, and gave a sigh of relief as it turned out to be a pretty decent day. Sure, it was still a little warm, but it wasn't humid, or raining something strange. You had to take your wins where you could get them around here.

As usual, there was a buffet of food awaiting the folks on the welcome shuttle, and blue and gold tables and chairs were set up across the lawn, most still covered in glitter from the last picnic. Sorry not! Happy picnic day!

[OCD is up! This is part one of the picnic, specifically for meeting siblings, roommates, and teachers. The rest of the picnic is happening here. Since it's outside, the picnic is open to all students, teachers, and townies!]

Fjord blinked, tried not to be too obvious about glancing over his shoulder to see if she was waving at somebody else, and then looked back toward the woman with an awkward closed-mouth smile before raising a hand for a short wave and giving a polite bow of his head in greeting.

He supposed fellow individuals in their particular shade of verdigris were in short supply, here. Almost everybody else appeared to be human.

Hera came over and stuck her hand out. "Hera Syndulla, hi. I just figure with all the humans around, the rest of us ought to stick together. Are you Mirialan?" He didn't have tattoos, but the rest fit.

"The name's Fjord," he replied, at least faintly relieved that not everybody here seemed to know about him. "And I'm of orcish descent. I'm afraid... I'm not familiar with the Mirialan people." He tilted his head faintly as he reached out one black-clawed hand to shake hers. "Or yours. Apologies."

She looked like she could possibly be of some manner of draconic or tiefling stock, but exactly what? That was utterly beyond him.

Hera shrugged and shook his hand, smiling. "Sorry; looks like we're not from the same place, then. I'm twi'lek. Normal where I'm from. Mirialans are he only green-skinned humanoids I've seen before, so I was guessing. You're new?"

"Apparently I am," Fjord agreed, glancing up dubiously toward the school. "Which was news to me, I'll admit. Where you're from? This place clearly isn't where I'm from, and the circumstances of my arrival have been... mysterious, at best... but I'll admit to some degree of interest in just what sort of," he spread his hands a little, perplexed, "situations people here have behind them."

"This isn't what I'm used to, either," Hera said. "It's lower tech and a lot more humans, mostly. I'm from a planet called Ryloth, in the outer rim of an entirely different galaxy. What about you?"

Ryloth? A different galaxy? Fjord glanced up toward the sky again, even though the strange single moon was long out of view, now.

"Exandria," he replied. "I'm from Port Damali, along the Menagerie Coast of Wildemount. The world is Exandria."

Having to name the world he was from was strange enough that he absolutely did do so twice, yes. He tilted his head at Hera curiously.

"When you say, 'lower tech...?'"

He was a man in medium leather armor with a longsword on his back. This was gonna be a trip.

Hey, Hera'd seen weirder. She shrugged. "I'm used to holos instead of flat pictures, starships instead of cars or rickshaws, bacta instead of bandages. It's been a bit of an adjustment. What's it like where you're from?"

"Flat pictures, rickshaws, and bandages," Fjord replied, a little at a loss. "I don't know what most of the rest is."

He paused.

"But I must confess, you've got my attention at 'starships.'"

Hera smiled. "Well, this world doesn't have them yet, but I have mine. Enclosed ships that fly from world to world. And here." She got out her comm and pulled up a holo of the Ghost. "This is a holo - a hologram, and it's a picture of my ship. So there's two more things you know."

Fjord blinked, and then stared at the holo with barely-concealed fascination.

"So it's an illusion," he replied. "We have magic in my world that can do similar. But no way to fly from world to world. None that I'm aware of, at least."

Hera smiled. "If you ever want to see this world from space, let me know. There's not a lot of other places to fly to around here, but we can still fly up."

"Fly up," Fjord drawled, looking skyward thoughtfully. "You know, that sounds mighty nice, Ms. Syndulla. I might just have to take you up on that offer sometime."

"I'll take any excuse to fly," Hera admitted, grinning. "I manage the scrapyard in town." She hooked her thumb in that direction. "Find me there, I'll take you up."

Scrapyard. In town. Fjord's gaze turned in that direction, looking out over the town, and then he nodded.

"Provided I don't wake up somewhere else entirely tomorrow," because really, really, "I think I will. Much obliged."
