Fandom High Welcome Picnic, Front Lawn of the School, All Day: Part I

Everyone had been keeping a close eye on the weather, and gave a sigh of relief as it turned out to be a pretty decent day. Sure, it was still a little warm, but it wasn't humid, or raining something strange. You had to take your wins where you could get them around here.

As usual, there was a buffet of food awaiting the folks on the welcome shuttle, and blue and gold tables and chairs were set up across the lawn, most still covered in glitter from the last picnic. Sorry ~~not~~! Happy picnic day!

[OCD is up! This is part one of the picnic, specifically for meeting siblings, roommates, and teachers. The rest of the picnic is happening here. Since it's outside, the picnic is open to all students, teachers, and townies!]

Prompto's camera finger was definitely getting a work-out today; he barely stopped taking pictures the whole way over to the picnic and did't imagine he'd stop any time soon, either.

Still, one of his favorites was definitely going to be the selfie he snapped once he got his nametag, slapped it onto his vest, and then tried a few poses until he got one right that showed the tag well enough to read it, figuring Noctis would get a kick out of it. And then he kind of poked at it a little, grinning down at it dorkily, adjusting it, adjusting his vest, puffing out his chest a little as if to display it more, then laughing at himself, shaking his head, telling himself to stop being such a nerd, but he couldn't help it! He was just too excited!

He had a nametag. It was right there with all the other ones. Right now, he belonged to something, and the physical proof was right there below his favorite 'It's a Beautiful Day. Now Watch Some Bastard Fuck It Up' patch.

Yeah, okay, maybe he was a nerd, but it was amusing to watch, and then she actually had to go up to him to check out his name tag. "Oh, hey, you're my little sib."

"Hm?" Prompto would probably always be a little thrown off whenever anyone approached him to talk to him, and the near dizziness of his excitement and this one being a cute girl probably didn't help. He seemed a little dazed for a second as he quirked his head her way, blinked, and then found a laugh. "Your what now?"

"The school assigns people who've been here a while-" She'd been here one (1) summer. "-to help out the new kids. I'm Sabine."

"Oh!"

And the school, it seemed, had deigned to grace him with what appeared to be an insanely cool chick. He rolled his eyes up toward the sky to thank the School Gods before his brain managed to remind him that he shouldn't be too hasty to thank them since he'd probably screw it up somehow anyway.

"Awesome! That's great! Nice to meet you, Sabine, I'm Prompto!"

Yeah, Prompto, she already knew that. He then realized his mind went a little blank and he didn't know what else to say and he fidget a little before quickly bringing up the good old failsafe, his camera.

"Mind if I get a picture?"

"Uh, I guess?"

She wasn't used to the one getting pictures taken of them. She took plenty, mainly of explosions or things that looked cool, but that was different.

"Sweet, thanks!" said Prompto, lifting the camera up to his eye to get a few adjustments on the lens and hopefully hiding a little bit of his stupid grin. Man! The colors! This was going to be a good one.

And, at the threat of sounding like more of a dork than he probably already did, he decided to try the thing that Vette had taught him earlier before the shuttle. "Big smile! Say 'Wookiee!'"

Sabine had no idea what her expression was at hearing that one.

As soon as he'd taken the picture, she asked, "Wookiee, huh? Where are you from?"

And now Prompto's laugh went a little embarrassed, almost like he'd been caught in a lie of some sort. He ducked his head, rubbing the back of his neck with his free hand. "A place called Insomnia," he tried, "ever heard of it?"

No one so far had, so he wasn't expecting much. Which was so weird, who hadn't ever heard of one of the biggest cities in all of Eos? Bizarro.

"'Wookiee''s just something I picked up from someone on the shuttle here. She said it was a good word to help get people to smile for a shot, and she really nailed it. See?"

With a few presses of a button, he'd scrolled through the digital images of all the pictures he'd take so far to turn it around and show Sabine the selfie he'd taken with Vette, big old grins on both their faces. It was....probably one of his favorites so far, even if he still thought it was weird that she was blue.

"Never heard of it," she admitted, looking at the picture. "Oh hey, another Twi'lek!"

It felt weird when so many people from all over were or passed for human here.

Welp. At least being this far out, Prompto could probably stop worrying about running into any Nifs who might give him trouble for being loyal to the crown.

"Twi'lek?" he asked. "Oh, is that her, uh...."

Tribe? Clan? Nationality? What was the right word to use in this context?

"...what she is?"

Now it just sounded crass to ask it like that...

"It's her species, yes," Sabine corrected. She wasn't going to expect everyone to get that sort of thing right on their first day. "Everyone human where you come from?"

Species sounded...even more crass, almost. Prompto's brow knitted as he encountered the sort of question he'd have never imagined having to answer before.

"I mean," he said, rubbing his neck again, "I...guess so, yeah, mostly. I mean, there's people and animals and daemons..." And...whatever it was magitek soldiers were, which just gave Prompto the creeps just thinking about it, "but those are, like, you know, all really different."

"Well, it's going to be a little different here," she told him. "You'll find some people here who might be species or colors than you're not used to. It's not a lot, which is still weird, but you get used to it."

Unconsciously, Prompto found himself rubbing his right wrist, underneath the strap of his black gloves, then stopped abruptly when he realized what he was doing. He was quiet for a moment, wanting to ask something, not sure if he should, if it would kind of be...not cool...but Sabine so far had seemed pretty level so far, and he didn't feel he'd give him too much crap if what he asked was going to just sound really stupid and naive.

"So..." he ventured cautiously, "she's really...blue? That's not just a....like, really good make-up job?"

"She's really blue," she nodded, not judging at all. "She's from another planet. There are a few of us here."

Trying to sneak that one in casually.

A different...planet...

Prompto's face filled with red.

That explained why no one here had heard of Insomnia! And why that Lana girl with the cool eyes hadn't even heard of Eos! Geeeez, he felt like such an idiot now! But different planets???

Also, he noted to himself, that bus driver was probably definitely not talking about an airship.

"Wait," he said, holding up his hand, looking down at the ground while his brain tried to catch up with this spinning information. "Does that mean we're on a different planet? Right now? What's the planet called? It's Eos, right? Eos."

"Earth," she said. "Welcome!"

Did that make it better?

"Earth," Prompto repeated. And then one more time, as if that could help give it some more believably. "Earth."

But then he laughed a little, held up a finger, shaking it slightly in the air. "Wait a second," he said. "No, no, I think I know what this is. This is just a really...really...really elaborate joke, right? Hazing the newbies, seeing just how many you guys can get to fall for it, right?"

RIGHT??

"You think anyone's going to sit and get that much blue makeup done just to prank a handful of new kids?" Sabine asked.

That...was a very good point, yes.

"...some people are just really dedicated to their craft?" Prompto tried.

"Sorry, no. It's okay, I think a lot of people think the same thing when they show up." Sabine had not. Sabine had figured out a good portion of the weirdness before she even got to the island. "You're in for a weird day, tomorrow will be better."

"Weird's okay," Prompto decided, smiling faintly. "I think I can deal with weird."

He..was pretty weird himself, in his own estimation, anyway.

"Good, then you'll do okay," she told him. "Is there anything else you're curious about? Any questions you have?"

There was so much stuff for new kids. So much.

"Mmmmmm...."

Yes. Yes, Prompto had questions, so many questions, probably about a million questions, a million and one, almost too many to know which to ask first, but then one did manage to rise to the top and begged to be asked.

"Yes. I have at least one," he held up a finger, "very important question. If Vette's really blue...is that," the finger now pointed at Sabine's head, "your real hair color?"

The most important questions!
