Camp Shenanigans, Wednesday, August 8, 2018

There was a giant stage in the middle of the park today. Are you worried, people whose names were about to be called?

Good.

"Today, inspired by the public service announcements you see in PE class," Anakin began, "you lucky chosen ones will get to write and perform an informational puppet show with sock puppets you create yourselves! Since you were so good at the instruments last week."

They were not that good at the instruments last week.

"You will be paired up and then spin the wheel of topics--" he waved his hand helpfully at a giant wheel in front of the stage, "and then perform before all of us. The second most impressive skit--by whatever metric I choose to use to measure that--wins the fish."

He waved his hand and the fish, now resplendent in a steampunk top hat and jetpack, flew into his hand, still warbling the Beastie Boys. He winced slightly. "Maybe by the time you pick it up, it will have stopped singing 'I'm a Little Teapot' directly into your brain."

He didn't sound that optimistic.

"Sock puppets?"

At least Uma knew what those were! All the dolls on the Isle had been made from abandoned scraps and things.

"...At least ours are gonna be the best dressed of the lot."

"Either the best dressed or the most naked, depends on the spin, I guess," Sparkle laughed. "So, you wanna do the honours?"

"Sure, okay," Uma said, intrigued in spite of herself. Not that she would admit it.

She spun the wheel, landing squarely on So It's Raining Sharks Today. "...Is that a thing that happens?"

"At least twice now," Sparkle agreed brightly. "I had to rebuild like half the clothing shop, the last time."

He rolled his eyes.

"Island likes throwing fish around. It's a thing."

"If we win this fish, let's give it back to the sea," Uma suggested. "We'll tie it to a rock and throw it into the ocean and maybe the island'll stop throwing sharks."

Or maybe it would throw more, because the ocean probably didn't want that thing, either.

"Oh god," Sparkle laughed, "it's a deal. Send the fish back to be with his people!"

That would make Hernando sad, Sparkle. Did you want to make Hernando sad?

Uma didn't know this Hernando guy. She was more than willing to make him sad if it meant ditching the fish.

"We'd actually be doing a good thing," said the girl who had only the barest grasp of 'good' instead of wickedness. "I bet it's lonely and misses the sea."

Why not? She did.

"We would be doing it a huge favour," Sparkle replied, grinning. "And... you know. The whole island."

"Is this what it means to be a hero?" Uma asked.

She wasn't exactly impressed.

Sparkle pursed his lips in thought.

"Usually I think that involves more spandex. Or shorter skirts."

In his experience, anyway.

Or rainbows.

None of which were Uma's style really. On the other hand, neither was being heroic.

"So, shark-rain expert, what do we do?"

"Arm yourself and avoid anything they can swim in," Sparkle offered. "... Boarding up the windows doesn't help much after all."

"They're usually bigger than the window anyway," Uma pointed out. "...What are they going to swim in that's not the ocean?"

"Well, usually they come with a lot of rain. And flooding," Sparkle explained. "Because if the island is throwing sharks around, of course there'll be flooding."

Uma pictured it. Then pictured her other form and wondered how she'd fair against a shark.

And smiled; small, but bloodthirsty.

"So...next time that happens, you suggest we get a rowboat and a harpoon gun?"

Sparkle blinked at that smile. And then barked out a little laugh.

"You know where to find one, I mean, shit, it'll be more effective than the sticker gun I armed myself with it at work."

"If Captain Edward doesn't have a harpoon gun, he deserves to have his ship stolen," Uma declared.

...Not that she was planning any such thing, mind.

Sparkle tilted his head thoughtfully.

"So... the game plan," he said carefully, "in case of more shark rain... is to rob a pirate?"

...

"Well, I like it!"

Uma's life plan was to rob a pirate, but she was okay with people thinking it would only happen under specific circumstances.

"You know anybody else with a boat?" she asked.

Sparkle considered that question for a few moments.

"Few ships, no boats," he replied, shrugging. "Pirate it is!"

This was a great plan that would in no way go poorly.

Surely Edward, after stealing his ship first, would in no way be prepared for someone to steal her from under him!

"Okay, so how do we turn this into a puppet show?"

"Well," Sparkle mused, "I think we need a few puppets. A shark, at least one. A pirate, someone to steal from the pirate... maybe a second shark?"

"Sharks should be easy to make, right?" Uma said. "Gray socks, stuffing, red fabric for the mouth, lotsa teeth... Maybe blue ribbons for water?"

"I like the ribbons," Sparkle said, smiling brightly. "And don't forget the dorsal fin. You can't have an ominous fin cutting the water's surface without... an ominous fin."

"Make those outta another sock," Uma said. "Cut it out, stuff it, sew it on. Easy."

At least they both had sewing skills.
