Camp Shenanigans, Wednesday, August 8, 2018

There was a giant stage in the middle of the park today. Are you worried, people whose names were about to be called?

Good.

"Today, inspired by the public service announcements you see in PE class," Anakin began, "you lucky chosen ones will get to write and perform an informational puppet show with sock puppets you create yourselves! Since you were so good at the instruments last week."

They were not that good at the instruments last week.

"You will be paired up and then spin the wheel of topics--" he waved his hand helpfully at a giant wheel in front of the stage, "and then perform before all of us. The second most impressive skit--by whatever metric I choose to use to measure that--wins the fish."

He waved his hand and the fish, now resplendent in a steampunk top hat and jetpack, flew into his hand, still warbling the Beastie Boys. He winced slightly. "Maybe by the time you pick it up, it will have stopped singing 'I'm a Little Teapot' directly into your brain."

He didn't sound that optimistic.

"Ohmygod," Sparkle whispered. "This is the best most stupid one yet."

He had gone to school for costume design and had taken workshops in acting. Of course sock puppet theatre was going to be his jam.

Besides a slightly itchy (and thus slightly twitchy) nose, Norman was back to normal today after a day of randomly turning into things every time he went through a door at work yesterday. But he was pretty game for this sock puppet thing, sure.

"This looks like it's going to be at least kind of educational," he hedged. "Maybe?"

"I do wield a mean glue gun," Paris said, squinting at the wheel's options.

Kitty was still in a mood today, and you know what would make her feel better? Watching her friends embarrass themselves for a terrifying fish prize.

She found a seat and started on her popcorn.

Sabine got her roommate, so this worked out. "So I want to be able to repaint the fish but I absolutely don't want to have it for a week. Deal?"

"Is it the education anyone really wants, though?" Brooke asked.

"Around here, it's probably the education everyone kinda needs," Norman pointed out. "I can pick out a few I would've liked to have when I was new."

Yes! Not an adult male! Which, really, it wasn't like Astrid hadn't been paired up with her peers at all, but it seemed an exception more than anything else.

It also helped that it was Sabine.

"Deal," Astrid nodded, but there was actually a faint grin there, "as long as I get to make a Captain America puppet."

You knew it was a big deal if Astrid was insisting on something.

"So this should be a disaster," Rey said, though she was getting used to that.

Still trying to fly under Skywalker's radar, though.

"Agreed." She hadn't had a class with him yet, but she trusted Astrid there. "Would you like to do the spinning honors?"

These things weren't too bad if she wound up paired up with other adults, but when it turned into lowkey babysitting is when Rosa took umbrage with it.

"You're not actually...gonna want to win that thing, are you?" she ventured, eying the girl for a moment before perusing the wheel. "What the hell kind of stupid topics are these, anyway?"

"Theron!" Sidon called out to his partner, waving his arm so that he didn't miss him trying to get his attention. Because that would be hard to miss...a giant...red...sharkman...calling your name. And bouncing. "Oh, wonderful, this should be interesting, at the very least! Would you like the honors of spinning, partner, or shall I?"

"The one about being naked," Norman admitted, blushing slightly. "And figuring out how to escape the library, a little."

It was dangerous in there, okay?

Astrid beamed a little; she was way too thrilled about this, really. This sort of excitement about a mock-up of a grown man in patriotic spandex couldn't be healthy.

But her shrug was a casual one as she said, "Sure," reached out, and gave it a good RNG, I SWEAR spin.

She narrowed her eyes as she read the label on which it finally settled. "Why Am I...Naked..." And here she paused to pass along an apologetic glance toward her roommate, but one that couldn't help reveling a little in the poetic justice, "Disorientation and Animal Transformations."

Because what else would it be??

"The naked one is probably easier to explain," Brooke said. "I don't know that I've ever been in the library...?"

Norman considered for a moment.

....

"Naked sock puppets would be easier to make, too," he offered. "All you need are little black squares of felt."

Because it was a sock puppet show. That sucker was getting a censor bar.

Yes, there did seem to be a theme today, didn't there, what with the stage and the popcorn. It made Astrid narrow her eyes as she consider probably acting or plays of some sort, when she got there early to settle in for some sketching time before everything got started.

She also discovered that popcorn was not a great sketching snack. At least not the greasy bag she'd gotten which left little marks on her paper from her fingers.

Ooh, but what if she used the grease marks to inspire her drawings? Now there was an idea...
