Today's shenanigans had been redirected into the community center--there were signs in the park to herd everyone into the correct place, and the food vendors had set up their rickshaws out front in anticipation.

"Today," Anakin began once everyone had taken seats, "we will take a break from physical acuman and see how good you are at following directions. Since I've taught most of you, I'm betting on...less well." He gestured at the tables, baking ingredients, and ovens that had been set up. "Today you will be working in pairs to complete two cooking goals. We have guest judges to grade your attempts: Dr. Lecter, who teaches culinary courses, and Mr. Eliot Spencer, who runs the diner. Listen for you names, please:

Ahsoka and Cristina; Aphra and Kanan; Amaya and Aloy; Zack and Hernando; Tip and Reno; Theron and Uma; Karla and Beaker; Jaina and Sidon; Astrid and Jono; and Mitsutada and Kitty."

"Those who come in second place will receive the glory of the singing fish," Anakin said, calling the terrifying beastie back to his hand with an indolent wave. "The rest of you get...sleep without nightmares, I guess."

Hernando asked around until someone directed him toward Zack. "Hello," he introduced, "You are Zack? I am Hernando Fuentes." A glance at the list of names made him fidget, "I am new and not familiar with any teacher except Dr. Lecter, who is a judge. Do you know any of them, or have an idea who to make a cookie?"

I love all of you horrible, awful crackbabies. I truly do. I have plans for that fish, watch me work.

Hannibal was mildly trepidatious until the teams were read out.

Then he was afflicted with something that in a lesser man might be panic, but in Hannibal was intense interest and a desire for fireproof clothing. Karla and Beaker? Did whoever declared these teams know what they had done?

"That might make it worse, but let's try it, and I'm sorry," Kitty said, starting to measure out the first of the ingredients.

"I wish I was more of a baker than a chef," Mitsutada said, going to measure out some of the liquid ingredients. "Similar skills, but one can sometimes elude me. You can course correct in cooking. Baking, you mix up baking powder and soda and suddenly you make a disaster."

Karla and Beaker??

Karla and Beaker!?

Ino cracked up laughing. She couldn't wait to see what happened there.

"Zack Fair, that's right! And as a matter of fact, I do have an idea," Zack replied, smiling broadly. New friend! Hello, new friend! You'd exchanged about thirty words and therefore? Friends. Forever. "If you don't mind that the one teacher I know, I'm kind of biased about?"

He pulled out his phone and brought up a picture of Ino, holding it up to show Hernando.

"I mean, she'd make for a great cookie, though."

Hernando examined the picture and smiled with relief, "Oh! Miss Iris! Yes, I met her at the beach party. She seemed very nice. We have a date this Friday to see some of her plants. She would make an excellent cookie."

"Oh, you've already met?" Zack smiled warmly. "That makes this way easier, then. I mean... I guess the cookie is going to get eaten, but if we do a good enough job of it I can at least send her a picture and promise to bake her more later. She'd probably like that."

This cookie was going to get made with love, dang it. With love.

"At the beach party, with fireworks," Hernando confirmed with a smile. "Have you artistic talent enough to make it look like her? I have some small talent but not, perhaps, enough. I love to bake and sugar cookies are easy enough to make."

The baking would at least be made with skill.

"It's just chemistry, really," Kitty said. "Easy peasy."

Which didn't mean that the decoration might not be a mess or it might not taste good.

Zack gave his head a shake, looking a touch sheepish.

"I'm not much of an artist," he admitted, "but I know her well enough to take a good crack at it, and if you can bake well, that at least gets us points in the preparation, right?"

He was thinking the same thing, apparently.

"Karla and Beaker!"

Unlike Hannibal, Ino's reaction was glee.

"Are you gonna be okay?"

"Perhaps not a portrait, but an impression of Miss Iris instead," Hernando thought aloud, "You say you know her? All I know is her love of plants. Tell me about her?"

"I know her," Zack agreed, with a big dumb smile on his face that suggested that they were very close indeed. "She's... she's passionate, in that if she sees something she needs to have happen, she'll just go for it. She's fire and lightning and ice all wrapped up into one, and yeah, she loves plants, but she loves mischief, too."

He could go on forever, but that seemed like as good a place to start as any, especially since more info meant wandering into things about what she did off-island for a living.

"Hope you've got a cast-iron stomach, Doc," Eliot said cheerfully. "This is going to be terrible."

"Pretty sure what'll make or break us on this one is the decorating," Tip said. "And . . . I can draw, at least?" She shrugged. "And I'm reasonably okay at following directions. . . ."

"Um," said Tip, looking at the demo cake. "Um."

And it had to all be edible?

Cristina really wasn't sure why she was here. At least this time the Event was inside in the air conditioning, instead of out in that godawful swamp the Mid-Atlantic called a "climate". . . .

"Where's the part on the instructions that says 'go to the store and buy a cookie like a grownup'?"

"Whoever made that is in serious need of a life."

"I can follow directions if I got the right incentive," Reno mused, considering Tip, and then considering the fish, and then shrugging his shoulders easily. "That's incentive enough, yo. We'll make a damn good cookie."

So it had been decided.

Tip snorted. "You planning to make blowing up the fish a new class assignment?" she guessed.

She was already planning out the teacher portrait for the cookie art, yes.

"Nah, that wasn't the plan, but it is now," Reno decided. "I just gotta tell Iris."

There would be something involving the fish, anyway. He just hadn't decided what.

"You want to cover the baking, and I'll do the decoration?" Tip suggested.
