"Hello, and welcome to our final summer game before we go on a break next week!" Anakin yelled through his megaphone in his usual spot in the park. Around him were tables covered in just about every color of embroidery floss you could think of--heavy on the rainbow colors for Pride--as well as beads and other accessories to make things pretty. "Today you will be working together to make as many friendship bracelets as you can in a timed period. The winner gets the fish."

He reached his hand out and the Frankenfish came flying in from...wherever it had been lurking this week. It was now neon bright, with teeth and a brand-new carving and could probably be seen from space. Don't launch it there to check. "The winner will keep this amazing prize for two weeks. Please do not launch it into the sun."

He pulled out a sheet of paper. "Now listen for your group:

Teachers: Kitty, Jenkins, Kanan, Amaya
Townies: Brooke, Peter, Jono, Hera
Townies: Hannibal, Miguel, Eliot, Mitsutada
Students 1: Rey, Tip, Astrid, Aloy
Students 2: Sabine, Norman, Sidon, Paris
Students 3: Summer, Breq, Dante, Beaker"

He gestured to the tables. "There are instructions on making friendship bracelets on your tables. You have a half hour. Ready...go!"

Did this seem too easy to anyone else?

Since Summer was in her team, Breq sat down next to her.

"Are you ok?" she asked,reaching for the instructions.

"Bleeuugghhh," said Summer in response. Which said a lot for being just a sound, really.

Still, she tried to be a little more conversational, turning toward Breq very carefully, but still wincing, because the sun was just So. Bright! Why was the sun so bright? Who turned up the sun? Why couldn't they turn it back down??

"I may have overdone it on the birthday drinks," she added groggily, holding up her fingers to indicate a small measure, "juuuust a little bit..."

A lot bit. It was a lot bit.

"Oh, I see," Breq said, adding a smile. "I hope it was worth it."

"Oh, yeah," said Summer, who would nod emphatically at that, but she didn't want to, you know, kill herself by doing so. She did, however, manage to pull up a dopey sort of smirk. "Definitely."

She would've taken about fifteen more of these if it meant getting to see Kanan's performance from last night again.

"But, hey," her voice went soft again, "what about you, Breq? How've you been?"

"Oh, I've found some new songs," Breq said, "and practiced playing the bass. And keyboards. I work at Groovy Tunes, and they sell instruments too."

Breq turned even more expressionless when she was enthusiastic about something, as it was easier to forget to make the effort.

"Oh, yeah," Summer got a little bit of a wistful smile on her face, "that's right, I used to report on you at Groovy Tunes all the time. Which one do you like the best?"

Even if the idea of instruments right now...that was a big fat no thank you, but, hey, no harm in just talking about them, unless Breq kept a keyboard hidden in her back pocket.

"There's not one I like best," Breq said. "There are so many songs I like, and which one I sing or play depends on my mood and the situation. Do you have a favourite song?"

This was Breq's favourite subject, at least.

"Not really," Summer admitted with the faintest shrug. "It could be one thing one day, something totally different the next. Right now, I'm sort of digging some old 90s stuff. R.E.M. in particular. 'End of the World (As We Know It).' Heard of it?"

The performance had been epic. Not good, mind you, but definitely epic.

"No, I haven't heard it." Or seen the epic performance.

"Can you play it for me on your phone?" Breq asked, always eager to hear another song.

Summer bit her lip for a moment, her eyes stretching across the park to where Kanan was busy with his nerdy group of teachers, and she briefly considered showing Breq the performance, but no, that would just be mean. Besides, if she went around showing everyone, then it wouldn't be nearly as effective as potential loving blackmail.

So she pulled up the original on her phone and handed it over...before making sure the volume wasn't too loud, leading her into instant regret.

"It's great for karaoke," she offered. "Just ask Kanan."

"Kanan sang karaoke?"

If Kanan was here, he would probably feel the amused curiosity that wasn't showing on Breq's face.

"Yeah," said Summer, her sheer pleasure at that managing to pull through the hangover and bring out her brightest smile yet that day, proud and amused, all in one. "And it was great! Well, it was actually not that great, performance wise, but he had two days to prepare for it, and he still went up there and gave it his best try. He also did a song called 'Rocket Man,' because I think I'm funny."

"I should try an get him to sing for me sometime, then," Breq said, now remembering to smile. "How embarrassed will he be if I bring it up?"

"Probably very," Summer admitted with a laugh...a very careful laugh, "but you shouldn't let that stop you. He's a good sport."

Or maybe Summer had somehow managed to wrap him around her little finger and exploited it every chance she got. But before she got too cocky about the whole thing, all she had to do was remember how someone convinced him to do what he did to his hair when he was a kid to know that...no...that was probably just Kanan, bless his heart.

If she could convince Kanan to sing, Breq suspected that she could learn a few songs from his universe.

She could ask. He could say no.

"There's no harm in asking, is there?"
